View Full Version : Sticky Lid

Ive noticed that lately my helmet visor has been sticking from the fully closed position, when trying to lift it up.
I pulled the visor off and gave everything a clean and sprayed some silicon at it, but alas the problem is still there.
It is a Shoei TXR - has anyone had similar problems with helmet visors, and is there a remedy ?
The helmet is actually getting a bit old anyway, so maybe I'll use this as an excuse to buy a new lid. Its always good to be able to justify money spent to the missus.
I saw some HJC's fairly cheap but Im open to advice on good quality helmets in the $300-$500 range.

HJC CL-14 is a decent helmet in that range.

Can't go past a Shoei Raid for quality and price, get one of the old models from AMPS (or whoever else has some) at $400 before they run out.
Current (updated) Raids are going at about $550 for solid colours, I think.

I like my Zeus Fliptop ... Nice helmet - comfy, a little noisy though (or am I getting more used to that?) 399.
That said, it sometimes needs a little adjustment of the screws to make the fliptop stay up, and I don't really like the chin-strap fastener...

A helmet thread discussing "choices"? Mutter, grumble, snarl...
When I'm King everybody will be made to wear a black Shoei XR1000. Than there will be no more of this nonsense. Harumph!!

Multiple Xs and an L. My preference is "fuller-headed gent".

HJC CL14's at $299 to $387 depending on graphics, but my pick is the new Shoei Raid 2 at $499.

Owners of an appallingly bad web site. How come motorbike retail, parts and accessories web sites are almost without exception so badly designed and maintained?

TSS Motorcycles had the HJC CL14 (with graphics) for $365 (rrp $399) a couple of weeks ago.
Not bad, really comfortable, but do find it a bit noisy into the wind.

Atomic's (the wreckers) website is pretty good.
But I think, in general, it's because bike shop people are greasy spanner monkeys / irresponsible speed addicts who can't stand the sight of geeks who know things about things like web pages.
[Edit and disclaimer: I know nothing about web pages.]

Not much on it, but it's not a badly-designed website, apart from the strange attempt at an animated intro page.

OKish. No sign of any animation or respect for the "frame number" field. If they aren't going to use it they should lose it. 6.5 out of 10.

Yea deano the HJC's are alright but i had a problem with visor locking down, rather when i would look behind me at speed say an example would be at pukekohe when i passed you i'd check to see how much i smoked you by and the visor would flick up, not nice, imagine i would've had the same problem if you had've shown up at manfiled :2guns:
Ohh shit one of two things is gonna happen next time i ride with you:
a) you'll smoke me
b) you'll kick the shit outta me before we get on the road
either way i'm screwed really, but i will buy you a :apint:

Mate,
Saw you come in earlier today, sorry didnt manage to catch up.
Your Shoei is getting a bit long in the tooth now isnt it mate?, And HJC is by far one of the best value for money helmets around! What ever model you get.
All visors and parts availible too. (not bad priceing on them too)
What ever brand/price range you get...
MAKE SURE ITS CUMFY!! (and of course-fits)
Thats the main thing!
Happy hunting!

I have to take my visor off and give it a a damn good clean....its filthy.
I have also put black tape along the top of the visor to help keep sun strike out of my eyes.... and it works..... :yeah:
Just gotta figure out how to keep the damn mozzies and bugs out of my way off the visor... all that blood and gut after they splatter ain't a good look...
One time coming back from Tauranga (21st Oct 2001) were they were the biggest bugs that I have ever seen.... stopped at BP top of Bombay hill and had to not only clean the visor but also the headlights.... and my jacket and jeans where covered as well.
I couldnt beleive how many I hit....and killed. When they hit the visor wow what a noise they made....

GOOD GRIEF - what's your definition of a badly designed web-page??
horrible font, overly scrolled, bad framing, bad colour scheme, Links smaller than image logos (so that Image Logos take the user's focus from the actual functionality of the webpage) - Man...
That said - you can get to the stuff reasonably easily, and the functionality isn't bad... I'd give it a 5-6 out of 10 ...

Motomail for one, especially the so-called "tyre-finder". Good grief! And this is the same company that publishes a catalogue?
Also www.whites.co.nz
Any "distributor's" web site for that matter. Bring on parallel importing -- including bikes!

Completely agree - No ADDRESS!!!!

Oh I just love it when you open new windows for no reason (and I still can't get a job as a webdev guy? WTF!?)

PS - Do you have an address for motomail... I'd like to go down there someday.

My definition of a badly designed web-page is, I suppose, anything worth less than 5 out of 10.
Atomic's website never actually *irritated* me during about 30 seconds of use, hence it's nowhere near as bad as some.
I don't know anything about HTML, I don't care, it doesn't bother me... I just care about being able to click on something and see what I came for. Quickly.

Got an xpeed for $350. Great helmet and much better in my opinion than the more expensive brands. Have put the expensive Arai away as the xpeed is nicer to use. :2thumbsup

I replaced the side plates and screws yesterday and all is well. I think the side plates must have distorted in the sun on Sunday at the featherston sprints.
Anyway, as much as I would have liked a new helmet, the old faithful will do for a while longer. Good thing with xmas coming and the expense that goes with it.
Loosebruce (Loosie, Lucy haha) - you're fucken dead !!! Roll on next track day...haha
