#1 - Naseby.
Plenty of roads in and out, both sealed and otherwise.
Plenty of options for Sunday ride.
Away from the coast and those November breezes.

Not sure about place (only Checked Flag comes to mind), but Dec 6th seems like a goer!

Dec 13th or 20 will be the Santa Run. No date yet.

West Coast, that Makaroa place, bugger if ya gotta ride twice one way for a run... Haast, Fox Glacier....
Or even go Camp style, bare essentials, at Pleasent Flat, between the Gates of Haast and Haast. And the roads are so great, ya could do em tow thrice or more times and not get tired.

Well do we decide on the date first??? .last year was pretty good ,first weekend in december, good weather ...couple good rallys under the belt from November and not to close to the xmas season. Hmmm place well , man something nice like staging post but down south would rock, semi private , and some cabins or lodge we could hire out.Quess if we stay central would cater for some interesting rides to get there for you gravel lovers!!

Danseys Pass about 50 km ride inland from Oamaru. http://www.nzcamping.co.nz/camp.php?id=702 On that same page is listed a whole shitload of camping grounds around the South Island. That may provide some other ideas too.

Rashika
3rd March 2008, 19:23
It would be nice to go west coast this time, somewhere like fox or franz glaciers would give all the participants a decent ride to get there. (ferkn decent for us). Maybe one of the backpackers would be up for it? Makarora could be interesting too.
First weekend in dec is good timing I reckon, most people had no issues with it except Mr Sensible who decided xmas HAD to come early last year! ;)

Bren
3rd March 2008, 19:27
Seddonville might be a good one too. It is on the Westport Karamea Rd just as the road turns inland before going over the hill to Karamea. The camping ground is an old school site and has kitchen facilities and some bunks plus a communal lounge that can be used.
Heaps of things to look at in that area, there is an old mine site behind seddonville which is interesting, The road to Karamea is a blast, and also heaps of fishing...anyway thats my Idea, and I will be at the do no matter where it is...also will be on a bike!

I think the Tautuku Education Centre is available for the last weekend in November. Normally used for school trips through the week. Loads of accomodation and on the Southern Scenic Route.
I am waitng confirmation on this. Will post as soon as I hear.

If you are thinking of the west coast then, what about the Kopara logging village,About 60k inland from Greymouth next to Lake Haupiui. It has all the things you need plus a working west coast woodsmans bar. The Greymouth Black Powder Club use it as their event spot and the ride to it is very nice, ok the last few K's are unsealed but a very tidy road. Spent a weekend there for a relitives wedding, awsome spot, plenty of space, and friendly owners. Might be worth a look at . And yes it is on the map! Accesabile from Jacksons to the east or stillwater to the west with lake Brummer over the hill from it to the south. Beautifull bush country

Wouldn't it be the turn of the bottom half of the SI this time?

Me, I'm always keen for the West Coast!
Fox or Franz area would be a good-sized ride for everyone I would think.

Dansey's Pass involves a reasonable amount of gravel.

Wot 'e sed about 'bottom half'.

Danseys is also approachable via Waitaki Valley if you don't want gravel.

But 1 Naseby, 2 Tautuku 3 Makarora would be my pecking order at the moment - other ideas welcome.

Now that would be a fun place, private, power etc, they even have a website now, lots of little cabins etc, it's a big well formed gravel road on the last bit, which would be easy for road bikes, nelson creek down the road to! .definitely an option!

Greymouth schmeymouth....

I'ts meant to be down SOUTH this year people.

Save your northern locations for NEXT year!!

SOUTH means for our purposes it is meant to be south of the Waitaki at least.

For noobs it's a Southern KB 'tradition' to alternate the location north and south each other year, it means those attending from extremities don't have to drag their sorry arses the whole length of the island EVERY year.

(As much as having had two rallies can make for 'tradition'!!!)

Dansey's Pass camping ground is on the Waitaki side of the Pass and the road is sealed all the way, unless you want to approach across the Pass its self.

There are also some great loop roads to go for a ride on in North Otago, most of which are unappreciated by your general motorcyclist!

I don't care where the event is held, just as long as it "is" held! :ride: Cheers John.

I got a call late last night...It's available for that weekend only at that time of year. Always fully booked for months ahead.

They're even taking bookings for '09.

Another idea would be to book it for 1st weekend in December 10. I know it's a long way off, but it would be guaranteed. And it would fit in with the North/South every second year thing.

I agree with you SD. We moan when you guys complain of the distance to the decent northern ralleys, so yes the event this year should be held below the 45th, or is that the 41st???
Agre also that Kopara should be the aim for the 09 ralley, which I bet will be a damb site bigger and we will need a spot like that
So what was the size of those sand flies?

Hmmm...St Bathans, Hayes Engineering Works, Curling Rink in Naseby (now that's a hoot!), Dansey's Pass, some great roads (Middlemarch-Taieri, Pig Root, Oterehua-Lauder-Omakau), I have a mate in Naseby that fixes up classic race vehicles for overseas clients and restores and races bikes himself, pubs all over, McRaes mine.

And I'm sure Jantar or Ruralman or Oldrider between them would know of loads of off-tarmac routes.

And Naseby itself is the most laidback town on earth.
I think its in some sort of portal to a reverse temporal vortex or something cos time definitely stands still there!

I have posted in on NZbikerallys.co.nz. so if we can get a conga convoy going......its called the Free Spirit tour 08, so hope some of you folk can come.......

As long as the dates dont co-incide with any rallies then I'm a goer......Hawea did their first rally the 9th December, so could we avoid that date please,,,,,as the little rallies do need support and no snubbing, and its a fantastic setting, beautiful beyond belief sitting on the beach supping beer and looking at them there mountains.....its beautiful i tells ya, beautiful.....:msn-wink:
