Far out!!! Freaky!!! Glad they got airborne again - and really hope they landed ok the next time around.

Guess there won't be anything like that excitement any time soon at the Hamilton Airshow

Jeez those are some impressive videos, things must have been desperate for them to attempt landing in conditions like that.

That is the old Hong Kong airport.

LOL..... yup... I quite like any landing where I can easily see the runway out the side window.

As my Mum always said... "The pilot wants to go home too y'know".

The second one is a cargo plane landing at Kai Tak - that airport is no longer used

Recent crash in Denmark - a Dash-8 had a catastrophic failure on the starboard landing gear during a landing. Amazingly no-one was badly hurt or killed: And you'll get to hear some danish as well in the background - a dialect from northern Jutland. :)

Not so good if you see the runway stretching out a 45° compared to the direction of the aircraft

Just part of the job really. I prefer the rough days as it makes my job more interesting. Two engine go arounds on jet aircraft are an exciting thing, especially with a low level off altitude, not for the faint hearted at all as they are generally done at a lighter weight and you have a lot of excess power available that needs to be applied with caution. Wellington sure can have its share of thrills but its not the only place in the world to pose a challenge.

I understand that both Madagascar and the Faeroe Islands are quite interesting for take-off and landing.

Havent been there but London City and Lugano in Switzerland spring to mind as more interesting airports. A lot of the issues are local terrain, LCY has a whole bunch of buildings cloce by, where Lugano and Wellington or even Queenstown have hills close in. This can also modify the local weather patterns adding to a pilots woes. On a world wide perspective, New Zealand is a windy sort of a place and pilots trained there tend to have fairly good skill in that area.

Yeah I guess so, but all relative. I have gone down in weight lately for a faster and more powerful aircraft. The type I'm on at the moment is only 34 tonne, half the weight of the previous type, hardly a heavy but it sure is fast and powerful though using its share of runway too.

I'd be like a fish out of water in your office, Terbang!
You only need to be two things to make a living flying a Fletcher... strong in the arms and weak in the head... :niceone:

You would love Sion, in Switzerland:

A picture from the other side would show pretty much the same, minus the ruins. There are some funny size aircrafts such as Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 landing there, but the pilots need a special training.

I guess runway requirements in the end is dictated by the cruise speed of the airplane for a fixed wing design. I.e. for high speed you want a wing profile that doesn't generate much drag and thus not much lift compared to let say a cessna that'll take off in what looks like 100 m.

That's beautiful! :)

Still, I guess the most scary kind of airports in the world are these:

Yip! I did fly out from Tauranga to Welly after seeing that clip on the morning news on the 4th.
turbulence on the way & Windy going into wellington (not like that plane) but I hear that is normal for that place.
Got stuck in the last row of da plane, why can't they supply front window seats or screens showing what the pilots see- be a much more interesting landing & takeoff.

London City....

Ah yes, I used to to fly to Dublin on Air Fungus out of there....one time the pilot dumped the BAe146 down so hard all the oxygen masks deployed..."psst, no you don't have to put that on, we're on the ground missus"

They have the forward looking view on Emirates planes. Last time i flew with them i had a picture of the taxi way on screen about 2 seconds after we had touched down........... :pinch:
