Dropped a stone in there while changing plugs?
The tip fell off the spark plug?

Something's been in there by the look of it

Whats the piston like? Any bits missing like a piece of a land or ring or something? Something from the inlet tract like a valve guide tip?? ie - anyone of a hundred ways to do that - more info required.

Cheers

You haven't been running Rawberry without an air filter, have you?

Edit: Also - wow, four valves! That's almost modern...

Detonation or pre-ignition will do that, but not usually around the intake valves. Does look more mechanical... like Paul says, anything lurking in there when you took the head off?

bike is having a new head put on seals piston etc etc

mmmm new engine

I take it the shop's covering the costs under warranty?

You'll love your engine post rebuild. My Snail is running beautifully after nowt more than new intake valves and gaskets all round and a bit of a clean-up.

+1

although i have contemplated selling rawberry as soon as she i fixed or do you think this will be the end of my problems once the rebuild is done?

I'd hate to opine on that, see you make a decision, and then come to regret it.

Really, the only guaranteed way to have reliable motorcycles is to buy them new under manufacturer warranty and flog them once it's run out.

If your income situation allows you to finance one of those new ZX-2Rs in due course, that'd be a good peace-of-mind option.

NO this will not be an end to your problems.

Bits don't usually break like that - something caused it, lean mixture, poor mechanical condition, wrong plug, wrong ignition timing, a severe thrashing - you name it. Until the root cause is identified and rectified you will continue to break bits. A fresh top end is not a new engine - go carefully until you understand what happened.

what paul said. Things as a rule don't "just happen"

after kicking about on the zzr for the past 2 weeks (have not done much riding) i still feel that style of bike is not me at all i feel awkward and unstable on a sports/tourer so even after a test ride i reckon the new ZX will feel the same.....

did spot an intruder looking all sexy brand new plus its a twin none of the single crap ive put up with so far, and im yet to hear anything bad about them....

Yes, indeed.

Ma'am needs to progress her full licence post-haste, and then consider the purchase of a C50 Boulevard. 800cc of manageable V-twin grunt for $11,995 brand new at your local Suzuki dealer.

(Although its dry weight is about 20kg more than Betty's! A very low CoG should help your little legs to manage that, though.)
