View Full Version : What radio station do you listen too?

Pex Adams
4th March 2008, 13:41
I want to know what you all listen too, either at work or in the car?

Being a sports nut - I listen to Sportstalk a lot, actually I must admit I listen to it to much. Its like KB, people talking shit 24/7 - I'd love to be a host for them:bash:
I also used to Listen to Si and Phil/Garry on MoreFM when I lived in Dunners and Chch. However here in welly we have Pauline Gillispie who has to be the uglist beast to ever be broadcast on radio, so I point blank refuse to listen to 91 especially now that Stables has left!

Mikkel

If I have no CDs at hand I'll listen to The Rock in the cage.

But fuck how I hate those bloody commercials! Some of them are so cringe worthy it's not even funny. And then there are those that are trying their very best to give you tinitus - some weird logic about if you yell loud enough someone WILL buy your crap.

Oh, and in the good old days I listened to www.pandora.com - alas, that was too good to last.

What the hell is a "Radio Station"?

Radio broadcasting is an audio (sound) broadcasting service, traditionally broadcast through the air as radio waves (a form of electromagnetic radiation) from a transmitter to an antenna and a thus to a receiving device. Stations can be linked in radio networks to broadcast common programming, either in syndication or simulcast or both. Audio broadcasting also can be done via cable FM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cable_FM), local wire networks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_network), satellite (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satellite) and the Internet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet).

<DL><DD>

</DD></DL>The earliest radio stations were simply radiotelegraphy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radiotelegraphy) systems and did not carry audio. The first claimed audio transmission that could be termed a broadcast occurred on Christmas Eve (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_Eve) in 1906 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1906), and was made by Reginald Fessenden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reginald_Fessenden). While many early experimenters attempted to create systems similar to radiotelephone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radiotelephone) devices where only two parties were meant to communicate, there were others who intended to transmit to larger audiences. Charles Herrold (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Herrold) started broadcasting in California (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California) in 1909 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1909) and was carrying audio by the next year.

For the next decade, radio tinkerers had to build their own radio receivers. KDKA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KDKA_%28AM%29) AM of Pittsburgh (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pittsburgh%2C_Pennsylvania), Pennsylvania (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennsylvania) (owned by Westinghouse (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westinghouse_Electric_Corporation)) started broadcasting as the first licensed "commercial" radio station on November 2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/November_2), 1920 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1920)[citation needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)]. The commercial designation came from the type of license—they didn't start airing advertisements (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advertisement) until a few years later. The first broadcast was the results of the U.S. presidential election, 1920 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._presidential_election%2C_1920). The Montreal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montreal) station that became CFCF-AM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CFCF-AM) began program broadcasts on May 20 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_20), 1920 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1920), and the Detroit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit) station that became WWJ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WWJ_%28AM%29) began program broadcasts beginning on August 20 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/August_20), 1920, although neither held a license at the time.

Shall I continue?

No Harvey fuckin' Norman commercials.

Oh, they are bad!!! I in general hate jingles - but Harvey Norman takes this dark art to an entirely new level!

Not that Smith's City, Pak'n'Save, Bunning's Warehouse, et cetera ad nauseum are much better, but still!

Im a fan of Solid Gold mostly down here. I'd listen to Radio Hauraki but its only AM down here and sounds like crap.

If Solid Gold is playing crap I generally flick over to the Rock for a song or two then back to Solid Gold.

Obviously there is a % of the population that tolerate it for it to have continued so long, but all the Shazzas shouting at me in their 'unique radio voices' every 15 minutes on commercial radio drove me away from it.

I'd be sitting here working and all of a sudden I'm thinking STFU Shazza.
Control the data flows - that's what you can do now.

Radio stations suck! They play the same songs over and over again so even if there is a diamond in the rough you soon get sick of it.
If I do listen to radio I love inferno 107 in dunedin, sweet punk and rock including some local bands, though again they do play the same songs over and over.

Im a fan of Jack FM (http://cbsplayer.streamtheworld.com/?CALLSIGN=KCBSFM). Fucken awesome music.

You think the rock has a good no repeat work day, well let me tell you, the rock has shit (I mean about 100 songs on its regular playlist). Jack FM has about 1000 songs. You wont hear the same song in the same week.

They only play "what ever the fuck I like". No requests, just good music.

What I don't listen to is anything with "country" music or afroamerican on it, unless it's Jimi Hendrix. Also avoid middle-o-the-road type music. Oh and girl bands, can't stand them. Hauraki is getting harder to listen to because it's just so cut and paste and like the Rock spends way too much time on meaningless pap in the mornings. What do they need 2 announcers for anyway, why don't they shut up and play music? If I want talk or sport then ZB or National. Listened to Willy Jackson and John Tamahiri a couple of times because at least you know it's total bullshit and they're not pretending to have any level of safistication. Tractors and chainsaws don't seem to help reception of anything much but AM frequency.

Neither, I just sing as I'm riding along..if I don't remember the words I just make 'em up. Sometimes I make up the tune as well. I tell ya, one can be most creative whilst wearing a helmet, and the best part is, the audience (i.e. me) Thinks I'm fantastic and very entertaining!
