View Full Version : Dial-up Vs Broadband

A big reason broadband is a problem is due to the predatory practices of Telecom both in pricing and holding back the technology

Interesting political statement, buddy. I wonder if unbundling will really deliver all the services the Commerce Commission believe it will, and to all areas?

No IMHO... (20 years in the Telecommunication industry)

Yeah, it is off topic, but since you broadened the thread why not discuss it?

that the Commerce Commission is interested at all proves my point.

Er, no. It doesn't. Simply demonstrates a government keen to 'be seen' to be acting upon the grumbles of others having given away the network 21 years ago.

The cost of delivering to rural areas will always be high and therefore unlikely to be profitable. Just like railways and other infrastructure services.

So, why would any new telco rush out and deliver services to unprofitable regions when there are so many more profitable places to try first... such as Auckland, Wellington & Christchurch?

Yeah, it is off topic, but since you broadened the thread why not discuss it?Because it is a political hot-potato that I'm not interested in getting involved with the details?

But in short, I wasn't even thinking about the diverse geographical network. I have issues with how Telecom acts in the high-density areas. (As a 'country boy' I'm well aware of the difficulties of providing infrastructure outside the major centres.)

...so why raise it then? and with such intense/emotive language?

Telecom are a sham
For fecks sake we cant even get caller ID etc, and we live in a city :pinch:

Explain that

It may do so in the cities and larger towns, but I believe rural subscribers will miss out again.

One significant downside to broadband:

WE CAN NOT FUCKING GET IT AT OUT HOUSE!!! FFS, we're talking 2008 and "sorry, the local exchange does not support anymore broadband connections..." is what we get from the ISPs.

I'm pretty pissed off by this and have been considering willfully sabotaging the exchange until they chuck a new one in... Alas, it goes against my nature.

Likewise. When NZ finally gets broadband I might consider upgrading then. The pathetic excuse for the current service is a ripoff price for shit product/service.

I'm 10.3 km from the exchange by road, over 12 kms by wire (it goes around a loop, and I believe we may get broadband in about 20 years time.

have you asked Telecom? They reserve slots for their customers, so try to get DSL with them and then switch to a different isp.

have been considering willfully sabotaging the exchange until they chuck a new one in.

You may have noticed the discussion around new roadside cabinets in the media? Each cabinet is a "mini exchange" so your new exchange is not that far away now! Each cabinet will offer broadband to more people at higher speeds. The cost? $1.4bn over 3-4 years.

Some basic DSL facts:
A - the nearer you live near to the exchange/cabinet the faster the speed
B - the fewer users who share your network branch the greater the speed

So....
- to have DSL you must be less than 5kms from the exchange/cabinet
- how many neighbours do you have?

Not necessarily.

You can live right next door, but if they are pair sharing, as they do at many RLUs and NEAX 61Es you may well be right out of luck altogther. NZ's PSTN defies the generally accepted rules thanks to some undisclosed corporation refusing to reinvest in infrastructure and then piling crappy fix after crappy fix on top of each other.

They shouldn't be spending ANYTHING on extending a copper network AT ALL.

Had not intended to get too technical, but exactly what I mean by sharing... ...of course, could be worse if you were off a K, or even an M!!

The new Cabinets will be extending the fibre network, not the copper network.... ...as I suspect you well know :2guns:
