View Full Version : What should partners do after a race?

BIHB@0610

Having watched a-certain-person-who-is-very-special-to-me come off the track sweating, aching, pumped with adrenalin, thirsty, grumpy, estatic, and miserable all the same time, I've experienced the helplessness I'm sure many partners feel. We just want to be able to make your day a bit more comfortable , but sometimes it's hard to know exactly what to do. :(

What is the best thing to do? What should we take with us? The answers will vary immeasurably from person to person, but give us some examples?

For instance, what would be in your "kit" - ice packs, sports drinks, towels, lollies, smokes, eye cream, Evian mist, Heineken? What's one thing you just wish you had at the track but keep forgetting to pack?

And what is your idea of bliss at the end of a race? Someone helping you out of your leathers and waiting on you hand on foot? Or someone just leaving you alone to process the experience out on the track? A combination of both?

Having been "Pit Bitch" a couple of times (I prefer "Pit Manager") I'd say the best thing you can do is make sure your partner or rider (male or female) is as comfortable as possible. Just having someone to do stuff for them is invaluable. Add to that all the bits an pieces that you've mentioned bringing along and I reckon you've got a winning formula.

Help get the bike organised, on the stand, tyre warmers on etc... help get hot sticky leathers off (well, at least the top bit) find them a chair and give plenty of fluids and something to eat... basically be a slave:whistle: oh and a  for making it back in in hopefully one piece.

I wish!! He's a useless pitbitch, spent most of his time out taking pictures, an important job yes, but he was meant to be my slave, oiops I mean pitbitch and brolly dolly!!! I've decided I have to figure how to get Pamela off the stand on my own, he was only slightly better at kick starting her than me too, and only because she's a slut and prefers males!!!

Babe it depends what your partner needs...

A sidecar boy does not need tyre warmers (unless you are Steve Bron of course) etc...

Just be there, help him out his leathers, make sure he takes lots of fluids in, that there is something to eat that is not high in sugar during the day... for your man and Andy, ice available for arm pump etc...

Just general support babe.

Keep in mind its not what you do that they appreciate most, its that you are there and supporting them in their sport of choice.

edit: and when/if the shit hits the fan, give them space....

I would ike the job Str8Jacket referrred to but I would think that to be a little bit inappropriate.

I could be the NWMBOB Team manager for you and Number one if Mr KD wants to take photos.
But I'm a hard task master, no results, no help!

Ok this is ME Im talking about and everybody is different.
1)Help get the bike on the stand. Even if you are olny able to hold the bars whilst I put it on the stand. Such a small thing it seems but apsolutely HUGE after a hard race.Same with refitting and powering up the tyre warmers.
2)Make sure fluids are available at hand right away--and a towel --dont push the issue right away cos I'm not thinking about me Im thinking about the race and bike setup. BUT -after a few minutes DO push the issue
Yea Im a big boy and all that stuff but my mind is elsewhere I DO need to hydrate.
3)Food. again dont push it but make sure theres good food available--Bannanas,peaches,heath food bars sammys etc.
4) checking the race results /lap times is good information.
5) make sure the log book is updated for that race.

From here on it depends on how confident YOU are. for example I have a calculated fuel load for each race. Measure out the fuel load into the measuring jug ready to put in the bike. fuel the bike up ,chain tension, Clean/polish the bike. etc.
One really important thing is to know when to just leave me alone. The very LAST thing I need on race day is a needy partner raising the tension level in the pits because I forgot to give her a kiss before going out for a race etc. If I need to talk I'll talk etc

I've been pitbitch for my lover a couple of times, both for trackdays, and dirtbike events.

At the dirtbike race, it was stinking hot, and we were lucky enough to have our motorhome there, so I chilled a damp towel and put it on his neck everytime he stopped...He swore it made a big difference as he was not over heating like his competitors.

But otherwise, water available on queue. Make sure to have a light first aid with proper blister plasters (these can be a distraction), definitely eye drops.

Keep his /her visor clean...

And of course, be on the sideline, cheering at every turn like he/ she is the most impressive darn rider that ever graced this earth :niceone:

Oh and yes, hubby was my pit gorgeous supportive attendant too, and did a fine job of it

*PS: I'd keep the blowjob as a celebratory after race treat...they get   and we don't want that on the track, now do we?

They are all great practical suggestions but often a pit bitch especially one close to the driver cops a bit of emotional flack as well.

So here's a couple of suggestions.

If he's had a bad one, made a screw up, stuffed his championship hopes or been beaten by a guy he always beats. Leave him "the hell alone for a while to vent and walk it off" Saying its OK when he knows it isnt by his own standards, makes it worse. He'll be fine by the next race!

If he's pulled off a brilliant pass, beaten some guys who normally he can't or won the race. Jump and scream, dance with him, tell him how good he is, then whisper, him winning makes you hot!!

Scenario 1 "bad day out" Live to fight another day?
Scenario 2 "Best day a bloke can have!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" By far!!

Joni
6th March 2008, 10:57
OK, my question to you Planna would be... do you see yourself as a "pitch bitch" or as his partner supporting him? There is a different level of support there.

My call, on my partner and Dave (who I support equally).... if they need a pit bitch they need to find one... Im there to support and help them where I can, but the mechanics of them racing is not my baby. I will go and fetch a license at the end of the day because it helps out... but if they need someone to do everything so that all they need to worry about is racing, then find people, like Steve Bron has (in the sidecar world).

6th March 2008, 11:20
As far as my partner goes, (And my partner just happens to be Planna) Immediately after a race i really dont want anyone in my face, or asking heaps of questions, i really only want a pair of side cutters to cut the zip tie holding my leathers up & them pulled off the shoulder, i want my chair free of any stray bodies, a bottle of powerade (red) & sit & chat with Andy pretty much alone for five minutes.
That is the most paticular i am about my time & space for the entire race weekend.
Before the race i couldnt give a shit who does what, so long as all my gear is organised in a certian way around my chair which i prefer to do myself anyway. (AND YES!!! ITS MY FUCKIN CHAIR ALL WEEKEND) im very fussy about where my chair is (next to Andy is best) & that nobody is in it when i want it, its my only personal space in the entire pits, so respect that.
15 minutes after the race im usually back on an even keel & its all back to normal.
As Joni said earlier, if it turns to shit, its best to back off a bit & give some space, but just hang around & dont dissapear, you may be called upon at any moment.
Oh, & all that other stuff is great too, wether its race weekend or not its nice to be spoilt.

Thanks Joni - definitely the latter. Like you, I don't see myself doing everything save wipe their arse so all they have to concentrate on is racing - that kind of responsibility would take all the fun out of it for me! I'm there to support them - and the list of things I mentioned (ice packs, voltaren rub (thanks Joni - gonna take that next time!), sport drinks etc) is about the extent of it for me. And staying away when necessary!

I didn't really intend this thread to be exhaustively about the personal side of things though - more about the practical things - what's a pearler about a bit of kit that you can share (like the voltaren rub!!).

Joni

Practical... Andy prefers ice in a bag, so it moulds around his sore arm and not a freezer thingie like I use. Note sure if Bones is the same. :2thumbsup

All the stuff that everyone has mentioned so far (well maybe most of the stuff - I'll save the blowies for later on). With WT one of the important things is recognising when he needs his own headspace and getting those who are intruding on it away from him. It's quite a delicate art.

I make sure we have plenty of food and fluids. I usually have to remind him to eat so I need to make sure I have appropriate food for his appetite level/ energy needs.

And what is your idea of bliss at the end of a race?

Having someone to take the tyre warmers on and off - take the bike off the stands and put onto the stands. These two things I find are the most important.

It takes a lot of my mind knowing I just have to say the word, then chuck my helmet and gloves on, start the bike and away.

It takes a huge amount of pressure off. And at the end of the race, only having to get off the bike and remove the sweaty gear is bliss.

That's some really good advice, thanks Riff Raff. We've picked up on the fact that we need to respect their headspace, but it's also about keeping annoying people away!

I remember at Levels Scrivy and Sidecar Bob had noticed one of their wheels was toeing in. They had really, really carefully attached bits of string all over the place, were eyeing it all up and making miniscule adjustments. Some guy came in quite innocently with his camera and started bumping all the string ...... I had a quiet word. Will be keeping a close eye on everyone's personal space (including the bike!).

Hey actually on the food front--much as I don't think fueling up on a diet of choc bars and soft drinks is a good thing. I DO sometimes find by the last race of the day eating a choc bar and a couple of lollies etc give me a boost. We all know its not good for long term etc BUT at that time I don't care --race is 15 minutes long--I don't care if I'm on a sugar low right after the race

You sound like a good pit crew Planna. But reading into Side cars post and then Riff raffs one of the most important things (as I tried to put across in my post) is his 15 mins of reflection time after each race. Doesn't sound to me like he needs lolies, just a pump, his chair and a bit of time. Some need this before, he says its after, get that right everything else will fall into place.
Its a stressful time even if you are winning.

Respect to you for even asking these questions, he's a lucky man!

Ye Bob you are quite correct here!!
But usually the respect comes with time and experience.
After many years of karting I've seen it all. Helmets thrown ( yes I did it once when I first started), Kids crying from dad pressure, havin a good day with Johnny Dad? (no I've never done that), karts thrown down, spanners flying but this usually calmes down over time when you realise this doesn't gain you any extra places on the track. It just screws the day for everybody around. And your competitors are laughing because they know it will effect your racing.
Sounds like you have a good pit girl there, also sounds like you know it.
Good luck to you guys! Wish I got a blow job when I won!!

If it's easier for you not to have a partner there, then the honesty is appreciated - I think we should all be up front about and respect things like that. nahh its just that as a rule I like a woman thats well er um "cuddly"
Im that way myself. Expressive
But at the track the very thing I love in my choice of partner is a distraction that becomes irritating.
ACTUALLY my wonderfull lady Jorja knows this --she has some kind of Frosty radar fitted. She just vanishes like smoke when the tension rises.
Mind you I'm glad she was around when my crew forgot to connect up a fuel line. --Kinda hard to explain how one has a rash in a VERY personal place and it was -------s fault if she wasn't there seeing it.

But :whocares: if it gives us plebs something to laugh at. It's all entertainment.
