They told me that anything under 2 min was a winning time at Taupo for the average Superbike race.

I guess I'll have to ride faster now.

At last round of Vic Club Jay on his 600 did 1:34.9 I think, supposedly a record. Carey Briar on his thou' was doing roughly the same.

If the Nat's went there I reckon Bugden and fellow mad karnts would be in the 32's.

Times don't matter at a track day though, ofcourse.

To whoever asked, if everyone's passing you and you think you're holding them up just move down a group.

I'm expecting to be backmarker of group 2 but will move down if enough people lap me.

Was lapping catching the backmarkers in the slow group and group 3/4 scared me with some of the erratic riding so figure I'd rather be in the clear air and follow some guys who seriously know what they're doing :) (until they disappear into the distance that is)

If I get off my arse this week I should have grippier tyres this time too

Haha if only that were true. But to be honest I was surprised I wasn't as slow as I expected to be last time.

This time I've got leathers with sliders so can use my knee as a feeler rather than having to wait till the pegs touch down and realise I don't have enough lean left to make the back straight (bad line and too fast).

Pretty sure I'll shit myself if I manage to get my knee down though. Been practicing pulling myself back onto the seat with the outside leg rather than my arms which should make a massive difference through the turn 2-3-4 combo. Need to find a better line into T5 too.. Was trying to late apex it too much I think.

Need to find a better line into T5 too.. Was trying to late apex it too much I think.

Yup.

Do a bit of poking around and you'll find Leong's video on YouTube of Shaun Harris taking his GSX-R600 around the track. Some good hints for lines in there.

I'd say that the trick is to come out of T4, gas it hard and let the bike drift to the right, then start turning as early as you can into T5. The tighter the better, but you'll need to be turning hard and starting your turn almost from the left-side rumble strip.

But then, I wouldn't really know, so don't pay any attention to that. Personally, I always end up wasting significant seconds with my head in a muddle, just coasting on a steady half-throttle between T4 and T5 where I should be hard on the gas or brakes.

Best tip, try not to completely cock it up and go for a wee offroad excursion like I did after lunch at the last trackday!

Yep you're spot on there. 80% of my problem is no trail braking so I had to get all my braking done before tipping in like I do on the road. The second to last session I was getting a lot more sorted though.

Watching DMNTD and Shaun through there I can see I was apexing WAY too late because it looks sharper than it is.

Any chance we can have cones to mark rough turn-in and apex zones? Would make it much easier to pick a point on the track if there was more of a visual reference (kinda like braking markers).

i keep the gas on thru turn 4 then late apex turn 5 theres no problem in that. it gives you a better run to turn 6 wich is good again to late apex (when late apexing you have to go over those horrible concrete patches but there ok)

Yeah I found I could power out better but it just didn't feel right if you know what I mean. Even starting the turn-in 3m earlier I think would make a big difference.

kiwifruit

the best advice i can give is what cowpoos told me a little while ago;

Turn earlier

A common habit is to square the turns off. This is great on the road as it gives you more options on the exit but not the best on the track. Try to make the turns longer. you will feel like you're going to run off on the inside at first, stick with it, you'll get better... (of course there are exceptions where squaring off can work)

Turn 1 for example;
Start turning in at about 50-70m, not 10-30m
Turn 4 (over the blind hill);
start turning in about half way between t3 and t4 not 30m before t4

There will be loads of experienced riders there, don't be shy, most are more than happy to help a grasshopper

:)

After spending my entire (albiet short) riding life cultivating a late-apex style on the road that's what I'm finding I need to do.

I started off doing that chroinically at the end of the main straight. Meant I was doing a big S to get onto pit straight. Following Enigma showed me a much better line through there.

Find someone to sit behind for a couple of laps that has a good line. Its easier than trying to organise cones:doobey:

I found toast takes a great line through there and so I copied him one track day. Found it to be great. He climbs into the corner tipping in real fast then on the gas to climb up through the corner. Very similar to a diagram in "twist of the wrist 2" which I borrowed off him.

Ah will catch up with you soon bout the book toast!:innocent:

Things turnied to shit this morning and i couldnt make it

maybe a good thing though that i wasnt hooning (ok pootling) around a track on a day where the karma bank had forclosed my mortgage, raped my cat, and placed a kick me sticker on the back of my bike.

one of the many issues was my cellphone died getting wet in the fog (which made me miss 2 turn offs, and caused at least one oh-shit moment which is currently being dealt with with nappysan) which meant i couldnt call to let them know- my apologies mr kiwifruit.

I'm putting this thread on ignore. i really do hope everyone had a grand day , but i dont want to hear about it. :oi-grr:

Thanks MotoTT for another great day. :sunny::sunny: And thanks to all the riders who behaved themselves. Few minor offs but luckily no ambo needed all day.:sweatdrop Mr Ducati Dude was lucky he didn't take anyone else out with him tho. Mr Ducati Dude was lucky he didn't take anyone else out with him tho.

Was wondering what happened there. Bit of an odd place for an off.

I was busy sorting myself out (trying to figure where would be a safe place off track) at turn 5 then I turn around up and there's a dude gone down on 4.

I have to admit I pushed it too hard but I was building it up a couple of percent per lap waiting for a sign I was trying too hard. Last time I was down the front started pushing so I had some warning. Not this time. Was grippy as fuck until it was slippery as fuck.

I was really impressed with the much faster guys (most of group 2) giving me space and letting me hold my line and found not gassing it too hard on the straight meant there wasn't a queue behind me.

Nice to meet a bunch of KB kids at last :)

Big thanks to gix and boomer for finding me a bling as brake lever :niceone:

Oh, does knee down still count if you bin? I mean I made it well past the apex....

Oh so that was you who went down at the same time?? As I got my yellow out I looked and saw you go too. I have to ask tho...why didn't you pick your bike up? If it was you and Ducati Dude down on turn 5, I cant help wonder why you might leave your bikes laying there in the kitty litter, not even attempting to pick it up? See the thing is to use the adrenalin to get going again. As long as you're not broken, you should at least try to get your bike up and out of the way in case someone else target fixates and crashes into you.

Hope your not too sore and learned something from this.

Good question/point... In hindsight it would have been much better to give moving it a shot at least.

At the time I really didn't want to be standing there trying to pick it up if someone did bail as it was right on the exit.

Even if I got it upright and started it was facing the wrong way to move it away from the corner. Could have driven it deep in the gravel trap I guess. Not much better though.

I wasn't really thinking properly as I'm not used to that scenario is what is comes down to.

Hope your not too sore and learned something from this.

I'm sweet as but will see how the morning goes. I couldn't honestly have asked for a better crash for me or the bike. It's why I don't ride like that on the road.

Lessons learned:

a) There's a reason why people say count to 3. Glad I was sliding slow enough when I tried to get up that I just rolled over. That survival instinct to stand up ready to fight or run is strong though eh.
b) Just because you've made it past the apex doesn't mean you won't lose the front
c) Having finished all your braking and having the throttle cracked isn't enough to overcome some other reason for the front to let go.
d) Just because you're in the zone and the bike is feeling great can mask the fact you're at 99.9% of the grip you have available
e) I probably need to hang off more
f) I've found my limit for turn 5. Time to learn how to turn left. For some reason I'm backwards to everyone else and prefer right handers.

Hmmm...

When I hopped up off the grass and saw Betty out in the track with her headlight pointing back toward the oncoming bikes, I thought FUCK THAT, I'm waiting until they've all gone past and realised it's there.

The last thing I wanted was to be Mr Eager running out onto the track to retrieve my bike and have some yellow-flag-blind hotshot run wide out of T7 and take me out. If they were going to crash into my bike, they were going to do it with me watching from the sidelines.

So I gave everyone most of a lap to realise it was there, and then BarBender stopped and helped me move it off the track - just the man you need when you have 250kg of bike lying sadly on its side requiring shifting.

:niceone:

If anyone who wasn't there is interested, my sidestand foot dug in and I lowsided at about 120kph coming out of T7.

I discovered in the process that GSX1400s appear to have engine covers made of main battle tank armour plate, a magic bubble of invulnerability around all the pretty black painted bits, and handlebars that bend back into shape quite easily. The damage isn't worth an insurance claim, which the man from Star who I'd been talking to in pit lane immediately before that session will be quite pleased about, I'm sure.

Also, my Quasi jacket and pants did a sterling job during the surprisingly-violent sky, ground, sky, ground sequence along the track before I came to rest on the grass. No injuries apart from a bit of a bruise on my left leg where I landed. I was quite comfortable throughout.

Binning left me feeling a bit tentative, and I didn't really come back on cam until the last session of the day, unfortunately. Dumpty has some tank cam footage of my first lap after I went back out, it'll be interesting to see if my riding looks as tiptoey as it felt.

I'm taking the sidestand off for Betty's next trackday.

I was more than a bit anxious heading down to this trackday. It's been over a year since i rode my own bike on a track, and I've only ridden a handful of times on bikes with more than 30hp in the time since my last track outing. The bike i was riding (GSXR1000K3) has only just finished being put back together and it owes me a bit of money - no prizes for binning it!

I flogged off work early on Thursday arvo and got my bike loaded, picked up my ever helpful girlfriend Lisa and then went around to get Chrislost and his bike. We managed to leave Auckland 'on time' but rush hour traffic meant it was never going to be a quick trip. Thankfully the trip down was uneventful with only one real tosser (other than myself) out on the road.

We rocked up at Aaron and Jasmines (aero165 and Meeky Mouse) place around 10.30/11 and put the bikes in the garage before proceeding to talk shit for a while before getting some much needed rest for the next day.

I had no leathers, but thankfully Quasi came to the party and loaned me his own two piece set, aswell as gloves and a back protector... thanks very much to that man! (this gear was great, and had a feeling of being high quality and also had awesome armour etc - was hi racer 9 suit)... unfortunately I've eaten more pies than quasi in the last year or two, so they were a little snug.

Sign in/scrutineering went through nice and easy as is the norm at MotoTT trackdays - now it was time to ride!

First session had me feeling like a n00b, really uneasy on the bike, hesitant on the gas, and more than a little cautious on the brakes. As the conti raceAttacks got up to heat things became a lot easier and my confidence grew - then the checkered flag was waved.

Checked my tire pressures, and they were both about 4psi below what i wanted them to be (this should have been checked before hand!). Also took the chance to put the camera on the back of the bike to do a bit of movie making in the next two sessions.

Second session was much better, a lot smoother, and more consistent but still a couple of moments from not thinking (thinking too much?) about what i was doing. The bike still felt a bit wierd, wasnt sure if it was the bike or just me not being used to the 1000cc.. after the session i got Shaun to do some measurements and found the rear preload was WAAAAY too soft - cranked it to max for session three.

My third outing was my best effort for the day. Was feeling really good, the bike was handling far better than the last session and I felt a lot more in control coming in to corners and getting on the gas earlier on the way out. Even managed a half decent wheelie for the checkered flag too!

Next time out i had Lisa on the back for the first time, which was also pretty much her first time on anything over 250cc, and her first time out on a track. The grin on her face at the end of 5 laps said it all :love:

Session four i moved up into group 2 and had Raj/YamahaR64life following me for most of the time, i was sitting on a comfortable pace just working on getting my lines right. He pulled a nice wheelie down the back straight and did a few laps up in front before the session ended. Again I was really pleased with myself, and pretty stoked at how the session had gone.

After getting some more gas, it was time for Lisa to jump on the back again. This time i upped the pace a bit over each of the first few laps, in her own words it went from being 'a bit scary' to 'feeling really cool' to 'why are these people going so slow, why don't they get out of the way?'. It was in the slow group, but it always feels good being the burglar - especially with a pillion.

The last session I went out in I was way too tired and just wasn't concentrating at all. I couldn't get anything right and the only part i was enjoying was the was the turn 2 - turn 3 section but was just holding people up every where else. I read the writing on the wall and threw in the towel, time to get packed up.

Overall a hugely successful day. Was awesome to be back out there doing it, and I've come home knowing what i want to work on next time i hit the track!

Huge thanks go out to (in no particular order):
Quasi for hooking me up with some leathers so i could get out on the track. The Stranger for all his help getting the bike ready.
Jas/Aaron + parents for putting us up for the night and providing breakfast in the morning, and for generally being entertaining!
The MotoTT crew for putting on a superb day (as per usual).
Shaun Harris for helping me setup my suspension - and allowing me to bang my own knuckles while setting the preload on the shock! (smart man!)
All the good c00nts out on the track for making it a bit more interesting.
"The Crew" (boomer, gixser, mr fruit, mr random etc etc) for talking shit and being good c00nts.
And last but not least, Lisa - for remembering everything I forgot, stopping me from stressing out, buying me food + drink all the time, helping out all the time, and just generally being an awesome girlfriend!

That is all.

The damage isn't worth an insurance claim, which the man from Star who I'd been talking to in pit lane immediately before that session will be quite pleased about, I'm sure.

Bound to be :) Have to get some quotes for mine but can't see it being worth a claim either.

Also, my Quasi jacket and pants did a sterling job during the surprisingly-violent sky, ground, sky, ground sequence along the track before I came to rest on the grass. No injuries apart from a bit of a bruise on my left leg where I landed. I was quite comfortable throughout.

Ditto for my Rev'it gear. Bloody glad I had Quasi's back protector on! (Will ride it down to the Tron for ya mate.. Didn't see you were packing up).

I only got one more session out in group 4 but I really lost the confidence in the front end. Didn't help that the brake lever from the 1000 was like having the quick adjust on max. Was glad I got back out though. Made riding home WAY easier.

I didn't have the best day this time. I rode down on thursday after work with duckaddict. Didn't sleep well, woke up with a bit of a sore neck/headache but that cleared up after a couple of panadol.
First session I didn't feel like I was riding well, but that's to be expected for the first session (for me at least). 2nd session I must have been pushing a bit too hard too soon (it was on lap 3) and lowsided on turn 3:
<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/dxwz-Sa7l18&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/dxwz-Sa7l18&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
The leathers held together well, there was a big scrape on the back that went right through the first layer of leather in one place (about a 20c size hole), and a couple of other small holes. The bike held together well too. Just a couple of weeks ago I'd modified the LH engine cover, put a 3mm aluminium cover onto it with durafix and was pleased to see it hadn't worn through in the crash (I'm sure a stock one would have). The bar end, crash bung, centrestand and LH rear indicator had all been worn in the slide, but the only thing stopping me from continuing the session was the gear change push rod had broken. Aero165 and Meekey_Mouse saved my day by having a spare push rod from an RG150 that fit (thanks!) so I didn't miss any sessions.
The rest of the day went well, no more mishaps, but I still wasn't riding as well as I have in the past, I only started to feel like I was 'getting in the groove' in the last session. I think more open road rides working up to the trackday and a better night's sleep would've helped.

Here's the last session in two parts:

My understanding is the high speed/ low speed is to do with the compression and dampening of the springs. The springs would compress rapidly when for example you hit a pothole at fast speeds, compared to hitting the same pothole at a slower speed. You would want your bike to react differently at high and slow speeds given the same pothole. This is how I see it being important to get it right, or ur always going to have a bumpy or a soggy ride.

+1

My bike felt fuckin fantastic after Shaun helped me out. I'd never ridden as fast and confidently as I did that session until I pushed it too far and lowsided.

There was just so much more stability in the front end over bumps and coming off the brakes.

2nd session I must have been pushing a bit too hard too soon (it was on lap 3) and lowsided on turn 3

Sounded like the rear let go when you got on the gas (good on you for not chopping the throttle and highsiding eh) but you weren't cranked much. Must have caught you by total surprise.

Cold tyres or something?

Yeah, I think it was just pushing too hard on cold tires, it was lap 3.

It did indeed catch me by surprise, I didn't notice the rear starting to slide or anything, first thing I knew I was sliding down the track!

Hi Choppa, I'm not saying I am a more capable rider than you and I apologise for yelling at you, I was very pisssed off with such foolishness. I am simply saying that there was no need for that overtake manovoure you attempted. You yourself said that it was the last lap, when I was telling you off, then why the need to pass me? I was a good 15 ks faster than you and had the better line, then you went round the outside of me and jumped into my line mid apex, fully cranked over 'slower than me' being the punch line here? Did you realise that that could have taken us both out. Thank God I had the presence of mind, skill and vast amount of luck required to stop lowsiding or highsiding myself over you (my front stepped out 2ce as you heard, then I almost highsided). If me or my bike had been damaged I would have made you pay. Straight and simple nothing personal.

This was the last session. I was in the fast group at the time, and this was turn 1 we are talking about, so its a pretty sharp apex corner.

Thank God I had the presence of mind, skill and vast amount of luck required to stop lowsiding or highsiding myself over you (my front stepped out 2ce as you heard, then I almost highsided). If me or my bike had been damaged I would have made you pay. Straight and simple nothing personal.

i swear that your back wheel was not on the ground, and it was more luck...
First stoppie with knee down that ive seen in a while.

This was the last session. I was in the fast group at the time, and this was turn 1 we are talking about, so its a pretty sharp apex corner.

He would have been able to get past you if you where 15 k's faster not in that corner

Im not saying it wasn't a silly move but think its was more a case of you panicking than anything else (I can be wrong of course)

Im a little confused; how can he be slower than you; yet out brake you and hit the apex before you... surely if hes gone round the outside then your undertaking :p get ya ass to the rear of the group then! And remember.... no winners without Binners

We caught traffic and some of the traffic didnt like it too much, mr red 750 gixxer.. he took exception to being passed and decided to ride like a squid... over cooking corners and making himself look loose. i laughed and Logan gave him an ear full.

I hit the apex before him not the other way around. He had the outside line, if he had held it I would have let him pass me before the next right hander but instead he pulled into my line! .... a lot slower than me (as he overcooked the corner, and was on the gas a lot later) now do you understand or would you like me to draw it out for you? :spanking:

The problem was he missed his braking point cause he was doin a wheelstand, also he was coming up to the corner on the far left of the track i was taking the normal race line. Wheelstands look cool and are fun, im not sure if every one will agree with me but during a track day with other bikes all around is prob not the best idea. Fair enough to get upset when you get a bit of a scare like that i didnt even realise it had happen till i got back to the pits i apologised to cool the situation anyways....

I was spectating that round(cos my bike is shit)
Saw the incident happen. Raj on the inside and ahead was taking a normal line.
Fella on the outside took a real late "turn in" and cut raj off just on mid apex. Raj was almost under the guys bike.
Shit happens but we gotta take heed of the passer beware rule huh?

For a girl.

Actually, all silliness aside, sub 2 minute laps at Taupo on an old CB400 means you definitely know how to ride a motorcycle. Top marks! You'll be putting the posey boys to shame if you ever get out there on a proper sportbike.

Now i need either:
a) stop being a poor student and earn money to buy a race bike and run it.
b) find a sugar daddy to buy me a bike so i can still be a student as the same time
c) find a sponsor because i'm so good

Your English comprehension fails you, madame. I was not offering to fill the role myself; merely to act as a broker thereof.

I personally wouldn't expect to have to buy a motorcycle as an entry ticket if I was interested in anything along those lines.
