View Full Version : The biggest piece of sheit bike you were sucked in to buying?

We have all been there. The bells and the flashing lights are on full blast, our gut is screaming: "For fuck's sake, walk away, this is a dud!!!". But we only see what we want to see and so we pass over the $$'s and take her home. And when the daylight comes, we sober up, someone who knows something turns up, we have time to take a ride, or whatever happens we see her for what she is. A piece of crap.

So we cry a little, get drunk, get laughed at (or even worse, the partner sees her and tells us what a loser we are...).

So what is your worst story? What bike did you buy that you will always regret (and you don't really want anyone to remember that you ever had...)

To get this started I go first:

Many years ago I was given a pic of a poorly customised 650 Bonny. Supposedly it was "all there" and "motor runs". The owner was in a hurry to sell as he was going overseas not to return (that should have been a giveaway...) I had no time to go and see him before he was to take off. But "my mate" who introduced me to this "once in a lifetime opportunity" was going there. So after a phone call I bought her. Paid the money to "my mate" and he took it over. A week later I was all sorted and went to pick up my "bargain". She was a pig. There is no way the motor had been running in the last 5 years. All spokes were loose and rusty. Rims were shot and tyres too. Frame was broken. And any leather that the seat had been covered with had cracked and fallen off. And that was just the start.

Got her home and took motor out. Hole in one piston, both barrels scratched. Fins missing. Clutch gone. Just name it. Well, apart from the oil tank. Was an alloy spun thingy. Nice (after some polishing).

The short of it: She was rubbish. Not worth to try and fix. So wrecked. but even then not much could be salvaged.

Learnt my lesson: If it sounds too good to be true it is.

And "my mate"?? He came too close only once after that.

Traded my first motorbike a Suzuki GT 125, which was like brand new for a Honda 350 4
When it finaly stopped going which was only about a month later, it was stripped down. The sump was full of shit right up to the oil pick up, so wasnt getting much oil
Had it reconditioned with the help of the company i brought it from and it showed its grattitude by dumping me on my arse on a corner in Opiki
Sold it not long after that
Lesson learnt

The CBR600 I bought in '02. A mate needed some help and I wanted a bike. I bought it and a jacket for $1700. $2000 later I'd replaced every bearing, welded the frame, bought new tyres, chain and sprockets and a new muffler.

Sigh.

....Ah. That'd be why, in your recommendations to me, you said something along the lines of "get a shop to check it out anyway - I've been wrong in the past." No wonder you were so thorough in your inspection, you've been bitten before. :eek5:

I haven't done it with a bike, but I have with a car. Bought an '85 CRX at auction for the princely sum of $850. Didn't even make it halfway home before the needle made it to the top of the temperature guage - it had no water in the radiator. Filled it up, got home. Anyway, a number of things done to it but it always overheated. Found out after I sold it (the cranky new owner filled me in) that it had a cracked head gasket. My current car is actually worse in terms of "I wish I didn't buy it", truth be told. Much more careful now.

I bought it as a student and regretted it immediately.

I still find it hard to believe that I actually managed to sell it.

For someone who ''should know better'',I still regret most purchases. The worst bike I ever had was the 1953 Matchless G9 - got it off a mate of a mate who had just ridden it around the South Island...No Problems! Seemed a good original bike, the typical rat that had been ridden into the ground in those days, they were everywhere for the taking.I forget how much I paid for it,but it was a good price at the time.So I rode the bike home...to my mates place actually - and as I pull up and switched it off,I watch the ammeter catch on fire, melt, and fall into the headlamp, and then the rest of the wiring burn up while I'm still sitting on the bike trying to find the side stand. It was all down hill from there, the bike was just a piece of shit I never got running right.

I had a number of problems with my beloved 600ss at first. Paid $6750 for it which was a wee bit over the odds but it looked such a minter.

I knew I had to get the valve shims checked, I knew I had to get the belts changed but the frame and forks were straight the fairing was in georgeous condition so I budgeted to give it a big 40,000km service.

So far so good.

Then the speedo cable snapped.

Then the rev counter cable snapped and it sprung an oil leak.

Then the electrics crapped out (in the middle of the night on a country road!)

Then I discovered the oil leak was a hole punched in the engine casing when a chain had snapped and been repaired with bog :gob:

So. I have paid good coin to:

Replace the speedo cable, replace the rev counter cable, fix the electrics, fix the hole in the engine (that one hurt!).

All in all I could have afforded a 2001 900ss which was my first choice anyway.

However I was recently given the option to part exchange my bike for a 1000ds and I found that I could not part with her.:love:I'll get some more miles and fun from my wee bike first.

Swapped the bottom end as it was rooted about a month later and got my own back on it by riding the sucker into Otago Harbour one dark and frosty night.

worse bike ive ever bought, zxr250. Everything was bent. Nothing straight. Carbs stuffed. Fairings stuffed. paid 2g more than it was worth (i.e., it was worth 0). Still sold it for only a $500 loss.

And "my mate"?? He came too close only once after that.

I'm intriqued ... tell us more.

Well I've bought several cars which were crap but I loved them all the same. I ran a '71 mini for years which was so rusty when I bought it that I cut off the entire front and replaced it with a fibreglass clamshell-type replica, which I thought was cool, but which an insurance assessor who saw it in a garage when it was being repaired claimed was the most lethal deathtrap he had ever seen. I was thrown out of the AA with that one, despite spending a fortune on it. Still, put about 90,000ks on it before the subframe was so corrupted a brand new pair of tyres was destroyed in the trip from the fitters to home (about 250ks). A VW polo (yes - all glamour cars) lasted about 50 miles from when I bought it before the engine blew. See, I was told the temp gauge was broken, but in fact it was disconnected. And the radiator was blocked . So drive drive drive, opps, head gasket goes, then the head melted :shit:.

As for bikes, I've been very lucky.
My dad bought a moped (but without pedals?) once though brand new for us to both use around London and it beggared belief. It was called a Thomas and how any worker in the world could let that leave the factory - presuming it was actually made in a factory - and sleep at night I don't know :nono:. It was outperformed by the 20-yr old 50cc Steyr-Puch moped that my Mum had, and that would seem to be impossible.

A yamaha XJ 900

Got it new from a shop in the UK for a 50UKP deposit.

Electrics blew, exhaust fell off, a real lemon. Spent a few hundred fixing it and rode it to death.

Woke up one morning and it was being loaded into the back of a truck.

I think they expected mer to pay more than the 50 pounds deposit over the 2 years I had it (they fucked up the paperwork)

About 2 years after it was taken away I received a letter from the DVLC in Swansea informing me that the bike was being re registered with an owner that wasnt me and, had I sold it.

I rang them up and told them no and that it had been stolen from my house earlier.

I sure hope someones day was ruined as that bike came as close to killing me as any bike has

I bought my '91 XR250R which I got a good deal for. Wasn't the tidiest but had a sweet motor.
So,...thought I'd get the Mrs an equivalent trailie.
Found a '91 DR250S (the one like the 350) which appeared to be a good deal ($1500).
So,...met the young guy one night at a lock-up and saw it. It looked okay so said to him, let's get it going, want to hear it.
Wouldn't start !! Tried everything but wouldn't go. Had a heap of compression so couldn't push start it.
He said, I'll give it to you for $1300. Well figured must have just flooded it so yup was a deal.

Looked at it the next day,...stuffed chain & sprockets,..muffler rusted out,...bent handle bars and broken levers,..non of the lights went.
Replaced the plug and battery, got it running and BOY did it smoke !!!!
Also the camchain made quite a racket.
Hmmm,...really didn't need this, should have bought the KDX200 I was also contemplating.
The engine is in a 1000 pieces at present, getting rebuilt when I get a chance, has new chain and sprockets.

Might even motard it as well out at the Bucket circuit... ;)

I've had no problems with bikes (although I got ripped off to the tune of a few thousand on the current one).
The most "sheit" bike I've owned was the XBR500RS, and the previous owner dumped it on the side of the road in a fit of exasperation. My bro-in-law picked him up as he was hitch-hiking away. I ended up with the bike for the cost of a few hours labour.
I can see why the previous owner dumped it: the thing was a bit of a mess, more so after sitting in the weather at my sister's house for months. But not to worry: a valve grind, coat of paint, some cheap new tyres and a chain, a bigger main jet, a $600 hole in the bank account, and it was all good. :niceone:
Sold it for ~$800 a couple of years later.
But cars? I always sell too cheap, and pay too much.

oh, where to start :-)
First bike was a B120 - that was bent, although with the tinfoil frame it didn't take much to do it. Took lots of abuse.

GT250X7 - was a partsbin special that I paid far to much for ($1200 in 1988ish). Poked, had an oversize, hard Dunlop Arrowmx out of a skip on the back and the front was no better, a tank off something else (guessing a GSX250 or sim), mismatching clocks and scrapes showed a hard and occaisonally violent life. I got it checked out by a mechanic (Greenlane Suzuki back in the day). Turns out the mechanic was a mate of the seller... hmm. Paid lots of money for the right tank, painting, fixing petrol leaks, new pistons and rings (had a chunk missing from them) small end bearings, swing arm bearings, chain, sprocket, etc. Sold it for $600 a few years later, in much better order than when I bought it.

The RG500 - the owner was economical with the truth. He had a pile of reciepts for an RG, but soemhow I never got them when I picked it up. Theclaims of engine rebuilds, cranks, big bore kit have proven to be ... not entirely correct. Dodgy fibreglass fairing, missing bits, some more unidentifed parts in a crate. no they are not spares - they are supposed to be on th ebike you moron! Paid plenty for it, but they aren't common,a nd spent thousands since. It never actually goes long enough to use for a decent trip. The gearbox claims have proven false recenlty when the box had to come out. First gear was chipped, and they definitly didn't have the new parts. $800 later for bits...

worst bike i ever owned was a 'mint' xj750 I bought from colemans suzuki.
It was more a case of what WASN'T wriong with it that what was.
1)First thing that happened was that the brakes failed suddenly at a most er "inconvenient" moment.
New caliper seals were fitted and all was good----untill the fork seals blew
bike shop was suspicious untill they stripped the front end. turns out the last owner had used the anti dive bleed nipples as grease nipples.
that was the beginning of a long series of workshop visits including 2 yes 2 engine rebuilds
darn thing never was right

Well .. both my bikes are lemons so to speak.

1st bike 98 RG150, purchased 2years ago for too much ($2,300) with a lot of kms on it. Didn't get to ride it since I wasnt licenced, dad rode it home for me.

Turns out powervalves seized, one had muched half of itself into the piston so bad I had to hacksaw the thing to bits to get it out the barrel - still had compression but pinched a ring etc. Also sucked up 1L too much gearbox oil somehow, suspected seals gone. So had the bottom end pulled to bits, new piston, bearings, rings ~$700 and $700 OEM powervalves, New Batt. Which then went and ate themselves partially 6 months later $200 to get them repaired. Broke a speedo cable, never had tach going right.

My repaired powervalves just broke again last month, $200 later I have some custom lathed ones. And so it goes. . Then there is my GSXR750 had leaky exhaust valve, run on 3 or 4 depending on the day. $500 later all new valve seals grind etc, then it mysteriously bent a rod on me. Oh joy.

Bikes keep me poor.

OH boy were to start, Young and Green ,with money in the pocket! Had a few lemons when I was young. XR250, Looked mint as, just needing some rings>> on 4th rebore, welded up cam gear, cracked between exhaust ports, stripped threads(my first in house motor rebuild!). GN400, wish I'd never brought the $400 'special' with a flat tyre what a pig. WR200>>> This cost some money , bogged up crankcase around output shaft, full rebuild gearbox/top end, spent more time in bits than riding>> saw the light after several thousand and sold it to someone else with a healthy bike account.gsx750, electrical problems.Mind you had some great bikes, my first road bike cb250rs- $900 with 15000km on it ,had a great run ,till a old guy turned in front of me and wrote it off!!. Mind you in the last 10 years I've had nothing but good deals and great runs, Must be the age thing...!

Can't say I've had a really bad one, mind you my needs are quite modest. And my definition of bad would vary quite a bit to most KBers definition of bad.

A 1970's ducati , what a piece of s##t, the lessons i learned.
1: Dont go out in the dark--- the lights work only on the straight bits and go out when approaching corners.
2: Don't go out in the WET--- putting feet down was more effective than brakes!
3: Dont go out when damp--- the coils and wiring cease to function when over 20 miles from home.
4: Only go out on sunny sunday afternoons for a QUICK blast just to let the locals know you can ride BETTER than them in the right conditions...!!!!!!

A Yamaha RD350LC, I had a fractured clavical and rather than give it a good going over I got the owner to push it into the garage and I handed over the $$$. Ignored it for another month while the bone was healing and then started looking at it as I wanted to restore it. The more I looked at it the more I relaised that things where not good. Then I took it for a ride and oh my lord, what a POS!!! Tried to on sell it, but it did not feel right that I rip off some other poor sod. Luckily for me I had brought it from another KBer through tardme and after a fair bit of noise, he agreed to take it back less a hundy for the fuel he used to bring it down. So it cost me that and the fuel and time to bring it back to him. Although, somewhere I still have the original airbox for it. I got a RD250LC awhile later and it was a great bike at a good price, Skunk has it now.

Honda Ct90.

Test ride was OK.

Handed over my pingas and took it for a ride.

Picture this (no tank remember) I'm going down a hill and put the brakes on. Well the twat had recently had the handle bars off (he never told me why) and had only finger tightened the bolts.

So as my weight goes forward, the bars roll forward, and with my sudden death grip this opens the throttle wide, almost as wide as my eyes at this stage (I can't recall, but suspect the sphincter (sp?) was not wide open).

Anyway straight into a ditch and ferked the forks.

Replaced those.

Fucking thing would go OK on the flat and even better down hill. But the centrifugal clutch was no good for hills. A few short weeks later it shat a small end and rooted the whole mess. I ended up selling it for the cost of a couple of beers....

I bought it from my dad, for not much and that was about all it was worth.

When it ran, which it did if the day was dry, you'd spent the previous day stroking it, cleaning the carbs out, fitting new plugs and generally removing the skin from your knuckles. It was bloody quick. In the way that the lifts in the sky tower are quick, you know, takes your breath away and leaves your bowels quivering. But reliable it was not!

After a few month and a few speeding fines, One on the day I got my licence in fact!, I sold it back to my dad who rode it once and pronounced it a load of rubbish and shifted it on again.

The worst bikes I've ever bought... were bloody Citroen cars all three of them were massive, tragic wastes of money how else do you describe a $9000 bill for a broken cam belt?

How do I change my user name?

An 82 Ducati Mike Hailwood Replica...always wanted one and saw it, rode it and had to have it........biggest piece of kaka I owned.....first 13 weeks it was in shop for 11 weeks of that. It would start up first time, warm up all good. Turn it off, go and get geared up and then push the start button..nothing..bike shop couldnt fix it...typical dodgy italian electrics from the 80s!!!!!!!

I owned it for 6 months, did about 500kms on it and sold it.

The bikes have all been good so far. Mass produced, but good.

Although the VTR1000F Firestorm had mahogany for brakes.

Well, there's plenty of evidence out there to warn you not to buy french motorcars. The amount of horror stories I've heard from owners of these abominations are legion.

I'll never get the "it's European" hype... It's a fucking peugeot - get a BMW/AUDI/Porshe and we are talking quality. Hard to beat the germans at the game of mechnical engineering. The japanese beat them for efficiency - but they can not match them on eye for detail.

Been lucky in regards to lemons so far. Only one was a crappy stereo I bought when I was 11. Oh, yes - then there was the Marshall 80 W Valvestate amplifier I bought that had fucked potentio-meters. Trading that in for part of a Slash signature amp was the best thing I could have done.

I was had by a suzuki TM400. It didnt cost me much in money but tried to kill me every time I got on it.
The gear shift would move in on the spline and against the frame so you couldnt change down. Opening my mouth while riding caused better deacceleration than using the brake pedal and Lever that were rumoured to be for slowing it down. (luckily riding with your mouth open in a fearful scream became standard practice.)
The kill switch was set on stun, unfortunately only shocking the rider, doing nothing to stop the bike. The carb frequently flooded and stuck on full throttle.
It was one of the first bikes with a self guidance system. One started it was constantly finding its way into hedges, bushes, trees, gardens, fences and anything that was capable of unseating the rider in the most violent way possible.

I dont miss it.

Shit cars, hah what about their planes. I once bought a Reims aircraft. The wing spar fizzed like a disprin and cost me a fortune in corrosion removal. Has to be my lemon as all my bikes have been beauties. Though I'm keeping an eye on Mrs T, she drives a bloody Citroen.

I'm intriqued ... tell us more.

He had kept away for a good while. But then about 3 months later came up to me at a party and started chatting. I told him what piece of sheit he had conned me in to buying, He told me that I should have gone for a look before buying. Fair enuf. But if a "mate" tells you it is all go, then...

The evening turned in to night and I had a few more. So did he. And this thing was eating inside me, and I knew it had to come out... I put him asleep in a ditch. In the morning I got worried that he might be injured, or worse... so I went looking for him. But the ditch was empty. That was the last I did see of him.

Yes,my worst ever car was French - a Peugeot 404 Coupe, very rare.It was fuel injected and the owner couldn't get it to run right. At that point I was working at a place where there was a guy who had worked at the Peugeot dealers for years,in the spares dept, and he had all the manuals. So I had all the info to set the Kugelfischer fuel injection up correctly, but the whole thing was just pus.The car looked really nice, with perfect upholstery and freshly undersealed - however, over winter sitting on the grass....all the nice underseal fell off, along with the cardboard it was painted on.:crybaby: :buggerd: Then my colleague told me he remembered that car - it had come in from New Caledonia,it was rotten, and they had to fit a complete new interior to it.

I don't think I have been so sucked in in all my life.
