I new to all this...
I had to replace the chain on the wr so I brought an x ring and as it seemed quite expensive I replaced the slightly worn rear sprocket and half worn front sprocket as well.
It occurred to me I could have just thrown an o ring on and leave the existing sprockets on to enable me to get all the life out of the sprockets and then replace the everything at the next change.
I got 80hrs out of the original x ring - is that good/normal/bad?
what do you guys do?
thanks
Mark

You did the right thing, replace all the parts at once with an RK X ring (I snapped a DID so I prefer RK, they seem to last better to me).
When your front sprocket starts showing wear replace that and you will get even longer life out of your components. I also replace the joining ling 3 x over the chain and sprockets life as that is the weakest link.
Never recorded the hours sorry. Only use WD40 or CRC on the chain.

Not for offroad. You should've seen the state of my regularly-waxed chain when I took my bike along a sandy beach -- covered in sandy grinding paste. Would've been better to run it dry with no lube.

80hrs, wow. thats not real long! i prefer the x-ring chains, they kinda seem quieter? not that you can tell over the sound of the pipes..:-D had an o-ring on my fxr150 and managed to snap it (WHAT? ON AN FXR150?! yes. i rode it pretty hard..:-D) and replaced it with an (expensive!!) x-ring and it lasted till my brother plowed into a hilux surf that pulled out in front of him last year, thats a good 3 years at least.

I just put an X on my cruiser as the O that was on there before was shagged. Replaced both sprockets too, wasn't too bad price-wise, $300 fitted. The bike is like a new one now - did I mention the old chain was shagged? No idea about the long term benefits of X vs O. I was sold on the $300 fitted, lasts longer, mumble, mumble, much better, V-twin, mumble, lumpy power delivery, trust me, much better choice. And the old chain was shagged, after all.
I fully expect to get many more than 80 bloody hours from it though. That's only about 6 weeks of commuting!

Just remember this is off road conditions, im looking at a new chain soon as the factor non o-ring is streched to buggery after 24 hours of riding.
And ill fit a new chain and sprockets for $290 fitted next time if you want.

it depends a lot on the bike you ride, for example a 450 4 stroke or 250 2 stroke will nail a chain much faster than a 250 4 or a 125 2, just due to the amount of torque going into the chain
