Hi I'm new to this site and have only just got my full motorcycle licence just today. That means I'm free to look for a bike I want as I've decided to get back in biking after a few years absence.

At the moment I'm thinking of getting a Honda cb900 Hornet as I want to do a bit of traveling as well and these bikes looked quite good for both city riding and long travel.

Any advice or ideas you might have in regards to buying a bike would be appriciated as I aint too much of an expert on bike mechanics.

Cheers!

Welcome to the site.
Uh oh, there are 5000 odd people registered on this forum and you could get 5000 different answers to that question.

My take is - There is no such thing as a lemon bike in this day and age. Simply short list the bikes that capture your imagination the most, then test ride them. In fact, I recommend you test, test, test. You will make a satisfying informed decision and will have got to ride plenty of nice bikes in doing so. :devil2:

They're thinking Hornet and you come up with RC8
Superduke maybe tho.....

Elysium, too hard to even begin suggesting without knowing budget, style, purpose.

Just don't buy the first one you test ride. Ride at least 5 different bikes and see how you go.

go with the 900 hornet mate ,of course would say that

seriously tho they are awesome for city riding and long days in the saddle, wont cost you an arm and a leg to service (no fairings ) and you can mod the crap out of them . if you do get one make sure you perform the well renowned bafflectomy

Why do people need to always change the exhaust on them for? They sound just as great with factory standard.

I'm looking for a bike that's good for both small touring and city ride, hense the reason the Honda looks good at this stage. I've got a buget of around 10,000 to spend.

....just as good  yea their is nothing wrong with stock ,but when you get an aftermarket exhaust it just makes it rumble and roar instead of squeak and purr as standard.

thats why 90% of hornets have aftermarket exhausts  depends what your into tho mate ,I know not everyone wants a bike that makes people block their ears when you come past ...but other than exhausts i recommend getting a screen that is something which is very useful

Lol. If I wanted to wake people up I'd get a :drool:Ducati( which I wouldn't because they're too expensive to buy and maintain) or maybe get a SV-1000 as they sound just as good. But I will definately get a screen for the bike. How much do they cost anway?

lol yea you could afford a ducati monster with that amount of money tho :niceone: sound bloody loud those things.my hornets pipes definately wake people up lol

yea i would ,they are about $150-$350 depending whether you get just a fly screen (mini one) or one with a lil plastic fairing around the screen 2 ,either or works the same really, the one with the fairing around it looks pretty cool tho .

if you are into spending money on bikes to make them look different you could always try get the dual headlight setup ,a couple people have got it on their hornets on here looks really nice.

Ok here's what I'd be looking at if you went to Motohaus:

http://ktlbikes.co.nz/motorcycles.php?bikeId=391

http://ktlbikes.co.nz/motorcycles.php?bikeId=431

http://ktlbikes.co.nz/motorcycles.php?bikeId=420

Could be bother looking through Trademe but...

The Hornets are cool. So are the Bandits. Also Z750 or Z1000 would be fun. Or ER6n. I'd even look at a naked SV650 or thou.

There are SO many bikes to chose from when you're not obsessed with the latest and greatest sprotsbikes.

Nice one on getting your full. There are lots of folks who ride from around here regularly so you'll be in good company
Cant help you on the type of bike just make sure it can do what you want, some of the members here have purchased bikes only to find that they where really no good for going around the corners at a little bit of speed on group rides.

check out this thread for more info on Manawatu rides. http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=55645

Just a liitle update but it appears I've found my bike and all that's leaved is to hand over the check after the owner has updated the wof and had it checked out.

But basicly I've chosen a 06 Honda cb900 hornet in red colour and it's only done about 600km on the clock, sweet as for a bike that's basicly more newer than an ex-demo you usualy find at bike shops.

Hope to have pics once the bikes mine.

Well today I bought my bike. I got a ride into Cartertan outside of Masterton and rode the bike all the way back to Palmy. Will need to get some fairing onto this bike soon, dam those winds were strong! Can anyone reccomend a windscreen for my bike?

But anyway here she is...

Nice! Nice colour, too! I was going to recommend not getting a 900 Hornet, 'cause you'll only be buying a comfortable, torquey, good handling allrounder that will only go a million kilometers or so without major problems...

Apart from a screen, which someone else here will no doubt be able to recommend, the bike really doesn't need much.

Either a givi one like the picture on the left or a honda fly screen on right ,depends what your into .

Id recommend getting a fenda extenda or a belly pan like below ,otherwise those shiney pipes will go to shit in no time.speaking from experience with that matter ,tried to keep them nice but with all the tar stones etc hitting them they turned horrible.

If ya want to know a great place to buy some comfort and after market parts for the hornet in nz give me a pm .

That's a Honda screen on the right? Man that's a horrible colour! I just seen that Anza Motorcycles sell some screen for about $149
http://www.anzamotorcycles.co.nz/content/public_accessories_indexViewEntry.aspx?intKernel_c atalogueEntry_PK=1012&limit=15&offset=0 and another for $245 http://www.anzamotorcycles.co.nz/content/public_accessories_indexViewEntry.aspx?intKernel_c atalogueEntry_PK=979&limit=15&offset=0
How much do those exhaust protectors go for?

Get the larger screen. I have the smaller GIVI and its 'OK' but larger would be much better.

BTW, thats a beaut bike!
