View Full Version : Transporting bikes (Napier to Christchurch)

As I wrote in another thread I've bought a bike up in Napier.

Now I just need to find a way to transport it down to Christchurch, so I was wondering if anyone has got any recommendations for transport companies.

I have been quoted $420 by Biketranz and I'm sure they run a good company. Only problem is that they'll be in Napier this monday and then not until after easter. There's no way, with banking transactions being as slow as they are here, I can have the deal finalised by monday.

So any other companies anyone can recommend?

Cheers
Mikkel

P.s. While I appreciate some peoples willingness to ride the bike down for me I am sorry I can not accept that at the moment due to issues regarding insurance.

I can not do that. I'm still on my learners license - trust me otherwise I would have!

Feel the fear and do it anyway?

Feel the fear and do it anyway?

I'm not stupid enough to engage in that kind of activity:

Learners license = no insurance for anything above 750 ccm
250 ccm 45 hps -> 750 ccm 125 hps
A new bike I'm not familiar with...
Unfamiliar roads...
40 demerit points on the account already... (breach of license conditions would be 50 more before adding what you got stopped for.)

I'm sure you realise that fear isn't a factor - prudence is.

And before you ask - I won't be riding the bike on the road until I get my full later this year.

I got my bike from Whagarei to Masterton using Motorcycle movers, the service was good, bike took a bit longer to get here than i hoped but they were the cheapest http://www.motorcyclemovers.co.nz/

The bike arrived in the same condition it left in so i assume they take adequate care.

Hope this helps.

biketranz is another one

Told you to try Emmersons...just rang them and was quoted $220 +Gst depot to depot. They have a truck going usually once a week.

I've certainly had Biketranz warmly recommended by everyone.

I flicked them an email - but to no avail, could be the wrong address. Could you PM me their details so I could have a chat with them.

If your not going to be riding it 'till later in the year, what's the problem with waiting 'till after Easter??

I'm not going to be riding it ON THE ROAD until later in the year ;)

Anyway, if you had just bought a new bike - wouldn't you want it in your garage ASAP?

the issues with insurance being.....that you can't get it insured?

Don't understand why he can't insure it for any riders over 25 with a full licence and then get someone to ride it to him.....

Meh.

it,s a bit sad you cant ride your bike back because it would probably be one of those events you will remember for the rest of your life .think about it ; the terror of it ,getting a ticket ,oh the shame , but Iyou might be able to live with that . so get over it and have some fun ,ride your bike back , you wont be sorry.

As I said in the P.S. - thank you for the offer. However, this is an older bike and I'd prefer not taking it out anywhere without having had a full service done and the valve clearances checked. Even then comes the matter of entrusting someone I haven't ever met face to face with a toy that's worth just under $6k. If for ANY reason something went wrong I'd hate myself for having let you (whether you were at fault or not) put yourself in that predicament. I hope you see what I mean there.

As for the insurance issue, I am not yet entirely sure what insurance I'll go for... Need to do some investigations (e.g. track, theft, comprehensive cover, company...)

Not to worry - I am planning a rather long road trip sometime in the not too far future. I was thinking Bluff to Cape Reinga - but I'll wait 'til my full license is in order, doing it on a 250 with all the restrictions could become bothersome.

Besides, I'll have to go to Napier at some point and shout MSTRS a decent amount of drinks for his helping out in this matter

BTW i have used bike tranz before and can recommend them. The communication was not so good but the driver was soooo careful with my bike even to it was proverbial piece of crap.

I've used Biketranz to get a bike from Auckland to Chch and I found them unbelievably slow (especially for what I would consider a mainstream route). They were also expensive and communicated poorly. Bike arrived (eventually) in faultless condition though. Used McDowalls to send a dirt bike up to Blenheim once and it was incredibly cheap and very fast. YMMV.

What do you guys mean by poor communication?

That they wouldn't tell you where it was at any given time, or that they just called you up on the day and told you the bike was ready to be picked up expecting you to be carrying your gear on you 24/7.

Im looking to move a bike from Auckland to Dunedin, cost isn't so much a problem, just want to know that the people moving it aren't retards.

What i mean is i didnt get any calls 'we are thinking it will be redy to be picked up monday' etc.

They also normaly drop it to where you want it, home work where ever.

It is also worth remebering that a lot of dealers use them so they cant be tooo bad (there were also a few very nice new ducatis in the back when they droped the 250 off)

Ultamatly i think they are worth dealing with the contact problem and i will use them again.

If any mods (or hitcher) want to fix the spelling in that please do...

3 weeks to get from Auckland to Chch. Never called me back when I tried to find out where the heck it was. Pretty slack IMHO, YMMV.
