Just got my bike back from a service so does anyone fancy riding out to Lake Sumner and back this sunday?

Hopefully I can get the combination for the gate tomorrow.

ummm arrr, at this stage of the game I think I'll have to say... ok, yes, count me in and be good if you do get the gate combination as I haven't done the little bit that's beyond yet myself.

4x4 book says the track ends 8.8km past the gate at a swing bridge, do not drive across the river. Return to Hawarden.

I guess one should ask what time :zzzz: you want to depart and where from?
Do we get off the highway at Amberly (or before), go via Mound Rd, Ram Paddock Road,Pyrimad Valley?

Sounds good - room for one more? Where do we meet? (just new to Canterbury, you'll have to make it obvious...)

thanks, CM

Sorry for the short notice, I only got a call at 6pm to say the bike was ready.

How about 9.30 am at the Mobil garage in Amberley? That should give those who live in town time to get up and out!

Oh and I would prefer to go 'the back way' (pyramid valley etc) there thanks for the heads up on that one Transalper.

I was going to try the route by myself but it's not a good idea to ride alone...

Hey fella's,

I reckon I could drag myself away from my hectic Sunday T.V. schedule, and come for a ride. Sounds like a good wee ride!

Damn the DOC office is shut until Monday and I'm not sure how to gain the combination to the gate at Loch Katrine - ANYONE KNOW IT???

I'm keen to just ride up to the gate and back anyway, never know we might meet someone with the combination there (even one of those 4x4 types!) - thinking positive here...! :@

- so the ride is still on.

:crybaby::crybaby::crybaby:

Was your bike in at DAS peachy? You didn't happen to see a partly dismantled DR650 motor in there did you?

Wonder if El Scoot would get angry if I "borrowed" his bike before he drags himself out of bed :D

Have a good one guys and TA - make sure that GPS is cranking :2thumbsup

Don't get too strung up about the gate combination - I was up there a couple of weeks ago and the fence is down just up the bank from the gate. Just ride around and enjoy. The river looks shallow by the swing bridge, but you'll get a surprise if you try to cross. My advice is to stay on the correct side. Have fun.

'Liberate' El Scoot's bike as any man who has time for TV obviously dosen't have enough projects on the go!!! :zzzz:

Shame you cant make it Ryan, it was your site that pointed it out to me (still learning the routes) and what a great site it is - welldone again...

I did pick the bike up from DAS but no i didn't see yours - try ringing Lynton as he said he was going to be working late tonight and you never know?

See you all in the morning, and thanks for the access hint Racing Dave.

I've hear the story - I want to see the evidence. I hear there is a cool pic of some water shooting from a spark plug hole????? :D

Some of the story...

1- the end of the line... it's all walking tracks only after that.
2- The swing bridge at the end of the line... El scooto crosses
3- End of the line still, walking back to the others already back at the bikes after the swing bridge.
4- when exhaust pipes are full of water
5- The offending water hole with attempted push start in the background. The button eventually started it after...
6- stripping it down to pull the sparkplug and dry her out.

Great ride guys.

In the 70's (and I've shown you these pics before) we used to go up the track on the left of the swing bridge and then cross the river further up and just keep going up the right side and then change back later to the left side to go up to the #3 hut

If we knew you were going to put on a show we would have carried on all the way round to Lake Sumner 8-)

It was a good stunt to end a perfect day, I blame it on my back tyre not having enough grip...

I was in there about a month ago on the mountain bike and went past the place where you stopped. You can use the pulley system to get your bikes accross if you are keen!!!

When we were there a guy went across the river in his 4 wheeler. No problems with the water depth at all.

If you go up the river a further 3 or 4kms you get to some natural hot pools that are very nice to relax in!

What are you not telling us about you.? Do you like getting nice and cosy? The last time I was at the hot pools you had to sit in a hole in the solid rock about 10 m up the hill that was rather cosy for two. Also the water was bloody hot.

Sorry to disappoint, but was up there with the Mrs. Good thing is that togs are optional! :buggerd:

Need the hot pools after the ride this weekend! Motatapu icebreaker, now that would be a good ride on a motorbike! Pity Shania doesnt like to share "her" piece of NZ!!!!:crybaby:

I hear you on the limits thing, I was reaching the limits chasing you guys through the 4wd bit at the end, the Africa was eating it up but I was getting some serious pump trying to muscle it around with a worn rear knobbie  but thats all part of the fun.
Only problem is I was having so much fun I don't want to sell it now :crybaby:

Nice to see you're enjoying the DRZ - I like what you have done to her (apart from the internal rinse). The Pamp is going great - keeps amazing me what it's capable of. I'd love to bring it down south some time and do some of those trails...

Have a look at www.advroutes.org.nz Lake Sumner is the red line running roughly NW/SE from Hurunui. You have to go south to Hurunui before you turn inland. To get access pass Loch Katrine you need to ring DOC. The phone number is is in the description (click on the red line).

If you are in a hurry you could be in and out in around 3 hours from Hurunui but if you take a bit of time and look around ????
