Damn, I cant vote because I'm equally happy with most of those suggestions. How about making it a multi vote poll so we simply don't vote for the ones we don't wasnt. You know, like we did last year.

You could always ride to Naseby via Tautuku?

Hi Guys! This here noob just cast a vote for Naseby. This would be my first ever Kb rally and it would be really cool to meet some of you characters "live".
Chose Naseby because it does seem fair to honour the north-south tradition that has begun, and it sounds a good spot with plenty of interesting trip options available. Thanks to McJim for getting the pole up.
Cheers.

Naesby sounds like a good location to me - lots of great sealed roads to get there and plenty of good gravel options for the adventure KB'rs.
I was going to check out the Pleasant Valley camp just South of Palmerston as well when I'm past there next week (and maybe this week) as I think the facilities might line up well to what we need.
Our first gathering went well in the shearers quarters but the numbers will be too many from now on for that sort of accommodation (we had 25 that first year I think)
Has there been a venue in Naesby identified as suitable?
Theres plenty of time yet so its not critical we pick the venue if theres a good alternative comes up is it? The key thing seems to be enough accommodation for about 40, an area or the whole thing to ourselves so we can be noisy without pissing others off, decent showers and cooking facilities and preferably close to a pub for those who want to buy a meal and for some supplies. A bonus would be a stereo we can plug an MP3 player into.
The other essential is some interesting roads for a group ride or just getting there and back - apart from mid Canterbury the rest of the South Island can usually do that OK!
Mikkel
19th May 2008, 21:40
Dunno what's so cool about Naseby - never been there. Seems like the only sane way there would be either over Lindis or Haarst pass - down the coast is dreadful.
I'd say a venue where cabins is a viable option would be important for me - I don't have the carrying capacity to take tent, mattress, sleeping bag, etc.
Ghost_Bullet
19th May 2008, 21:52
Well still some time away... but still looking forward to this one where ever may be, I think in another Sth KB gig thing I said about a potential venue over Fox Glacier that I may have been able to secure for this year or next. But circumstances currently mean that family may not have long term interests in the property I was thinking of. Which is a bugger, as It would have been purfect!!!!
Never mind though.
If this Naseby place is the chosen place for this year.... we must ensure that we make a destination on the West Coast of this mighty mainland at some stage... fabulous scenery, roads, people, and just great time's.
Yea.

Now there's a spot I hadn't thought of!!!!
Handy to Palmerston (and the Pig Route) amd has a large 'bungalow' type building with open fire-place and kitchen etc plus there's other cabins. (I'm going from memories of being there about 20 years ago with the hot-rod club)
Drop in next time you're passing there Bruce and see how it would suit.

I did my best....I was trying to help (and I did get my pole up!:devil2:) :(
Naseby doesn't appear to have anywhere with our demanding requirements but I am still trying to nail Wedderburn.
The last e-mail I got back from them was that they were in abusy time of year and would reply with costs etc as soon as.
It has been about three weeks now so I'll folllow up.

Look we know we need a venue down here, we all know the ride is very important but for this to work the destination has to provide what we need. It doesn't really matter whether thats Naesby, Palmerston Wedderburn or whatever - its going to be somewhere in this part of Otago and it is up to those of us who live down here to find something suitable. I don't think the rest give a rats arse where it is just as long as it works.

We all want a decent ride to our annual camp. Naseby from recent experience will not work at the "Larchview Holiday Camp" coz it will not only be for just us so we would have to consider others. :shit:
BUT I have been in contact with "FOX LODGE" just out of Fairlie off the Geraldine road. It leads in to Fox's Peak skifield. The lodge sleeps 35 - 40 persons. It has 5 separate Doublebed rooms, a family room with 2 Doubles & 6 bunks, a 15 bunk dorm, a 9 bunk dorm, & a 6 bunk dorm.
I have pencilled in for 5/6/7 December 2008.
You wind in around Lake Opua, right @ the monument then 5 kms of gravel on the county road, then through the gate for another 10 kms of shingle.

ok... weeeeeell nice idea, but these are my feelings on the subject ...and only IMHO okay? ;)
a: I dont really fancy 15kms of gravel each way over a ski access road (a few kms is okay but thats kinda a lot and I reckon there are a few others who might be put off cos of it?), and the cost was $25 for a bunk (on the website that is?), which aint that cheap
b: tho its a good hike for most people (far north and south), its a shortish boring drag for the chch bunch, only the wee hill after Geraldine to give any interest ;)
c: I still fancy Naseby as a destination if there is anywhere near there?

I'm with you girlie, CB hasn't had that much gravel road riding - well not since 1979 and I ain't so keen on 20 miles of gravel neither.
And that location is not really in the southern part of the island compared to say Otematata.

Um yeah. My thoughts too but I didn't want to be the first to air them.
Also, I think there was a general idea was that this one would be in the Otago somewhere so I guess a venue south of the Waitaki river would be the target area?

As a central meeting place its ideal, I agree that the gravel idea isn't perfect BUT the contact told me that in December the road will be hard n dry.

As for 2010, I've taken the liberty of pencilling us in at the Tautuku Outdoor Adventure Centre, run by the South Otago Youth Adventure Trust.
This is prolly the most used school campsite in Otago and Southland and some distance from neighbours, in fact, the nearest neighbour is.........me, about 2km away. Handy to shop, bottle store, two eateries, and on the best biking road in the country.

post no 43 has the details McJimmmmmmmy boyo!
So you southern lot, come up with something suitable!
a. easy access for all attendees (prefer little or no gravel), but still with a reasonable ride to get there if possible
b. close-ish to supplies (food & booze)
c. cheapish accomodation, possibly camping for those who are really broke, backpacker style would be good for those who want a bit more
d. can be self catering
and i do think you have a great idea there for next year Daffyd!

I'm also not particularly keen on 15km of gravel; call me a sook, but if it's the chosen venue, then I'll be there!
I thought this was a South Island Rally (i.e. for all bikers) rather than an adventure bikers rally. If there's gravel I'm bringing the cage instead.
If I can take the Vegas over the Danseys Pass then 20k of gravel is a breeze.:whocares:
Remember we do have adventure riders amongst us.

yeah but we had great facilities there to cook stuff, and had plenty of shops along the way there.
Loved the staging post, we will have to go there again sometime in the future... maybe we could just transplant it further south?

OK I hear the comments about low cost so I would appreciate some feedback on this idea before I follow it up further
I can get access to the shearers quarters on a large property about 10km up the Pig Root from Dunback - the cost will be minimal but there will be a cost (lets say $5/hd - or converted to boxes of beer for the farmer, although handing over some cash is easier)
The catch - there are only 20 beds. There are 2 showers and a good kitchen etc but I haven't looked around it myself yet so I don't know much more than that. There will be plenty of room for tents for those that don't get a bed (and I propose that those using the beds will be allocated one before they leave home and if you aren't one of the 20 you will need to bring a tent - those on a bed will probably pay a little more but we'll figure that out later)
The Dunback Hotel has always been very biker friendly and does good meals and will be familiar to many bikers going to/from the Brass.
There is some great riding through this area and an excellent loop up past the Mcraes Mine for a group ride. With a bit of gentle persuasion I'm sure I could get permission to take a group of adventure riders on a loop through some of the farm tracks which would take in some great views.
Apart from the short trip up the driveway the access to the property is all on sealed roads (but the gravel rats will be able to find many alternative routes to get there)
If the feedback is positive I will get out there sometime soon and have a look and get some photos - so don't be shy, let me hear it good and bad

Sounds like that would be something worthwhile finding out about Ruralman... afterall that is how it started, its a bike rally after all!
I dont mind camping by any means, and as long as we have reasonable cooking facilities, and a shower is nice too, and its easy for most people to get there (distance and money wise)... then it gets my vote!

Well then I said I was looking into options that could be about in Fox through relative over that way. Sadly the option may well be to expensive for us. The camping ground could be a goer at some stage.
I am very ken on the sounds of the plans progressing for this year. But could be worth looking West Side one year for sure!!!!!!
this is the response I got anyways....(would have been nice if there was beter prices though...)
We have rooms that share the bathroom facilities with other guests.
These hold up to four people (two single beds and a set of bunks in each
room). This would be $30 per peson.
We also have ensuite rooms which would be $130 for a twin/double/single.
We no longer have kitchen facilities for guests (the ensuite rooms do
have tea/coffee making facilities) but as you will already know we do
have a restaurant on site.
Also, we have tour groups coming in, especially quite a few in December
so we would also need to know what date you are looking at coming.
I can see that these prices are quite a bit more than what you guys have
paid for in the past. You may find that the holiday park can give you a
better price than we can. Their phone number is 03 751 0821.
Roll on this years KB Rally.

I phoned Niel today (03 4312564) and he tells me he has lots of biker groups staying.
He has full kitchen / dining room, as well as a hall for recreation.
Cabins = 2 x double beds, singles, plus singles with attached room with another single and bunk. Plenty of room for 30 - 40 persons. $15-$20 per night. No tents needed.
Sounds great, Tarseal to his door!
He has pencilled us in, but I must confirm later on as a new owner takes over in July
I will be passing thru Tokorahi / Enfield on July 12th so I will make a small detour to Danseys Pass Camp on the Waitaki side of the pass & check it out.

That's about a 320km round trip from Duntroon to Mt Cook and I guess Danseys to Duntroon will add another 30km each way to that (I'm not sure of the actual Danseys/Duntroon distance). A quick pootle up the other side of the valley crossing at Aviemore Dam and heading up to Benmore Dam is an attractive and entertaining alternative (twisties abound). Probably a shade over 100km return from Duntroon.

I love how democracy works on this site, the vote for Naseby was 17, Dansey's Pass 4 and it looks like it's now DP. That' still fine by me, as long as there is no gravel, as I don't want to chip the Duke's sparkly tank! Do we book direct with the camp if we want the double bed?

Danseys Pass Rd is NOT sealed, and hopefully it never will be. But the road from Duntroon to Danseys Pass camping ground is sealed, so those riders who want to avoid gravel can still get there on sealed roads all the way.
I'm another who votes that we keep it at the 2nd weekend in December. The 1st weekend clashes with the Chatto Creek 1000 miler and also the Long Drop rally.

Sealed to Nazeby, sealed to Dansey Pass Camp!
The bit in between (Dansey Pass to Naseby) is still gravel, thank goodness!
It's an easy road to traverse on almost any kind of bike, it's just personal choice.
The roads around to either camp are good sealed touring bike type roads.

Just want to tell you guys that Margie and I (the soon-to-be new owners of Danseys Pass Holiday Park) are excited about hosting your December rally! We are obsessed bikers...had our first date on a 1970 BMW R60/5 in December of 1971 and have been riding ever since. So, when you ride in, don't mind us if we gawk and slobber over your bikes...it's what we do! -- See you in Dec. (Scott)

Just an idea, seeing bikes are a passion for you, You could start a picture wall with pics of all the bikes that visit you. There's a pub owner in Westport that does this and it's quite impressive.

Well Scott and Margie will make it 40 now and don't forget some of us will have pillions.
Fantastic cloudless warm day at Otematata this morning, Mrs O says lets go for a ride on the bike!
Left home just before mid day today, went past the camp, was going to call in to refresh our memories of the lay-out but we were hungry.
Rode over to Dansey Pass hotel for a pie and coffee, the road is probably in the best condition (if you like it like that) I have seen it for years!
Big notices at each end "Not suitable for caravans" what do we pass? A little 4x4 with a bloody big caravan struggling through!
Rotten foggy cold weather from Kurow to the top of the pass but really sunny and warm again on the Maniototo side.
After our pie and coffee we rode on down the Pig Route to Palmerston, Trotters Gorge, Waianakarua, up the coast road to Kakanui, then Oamaru, fuelled up  then home via Western, Airedale, Papakaio, Waitaki Valley highway 83 and home at 05:40pm.
212 miles for a pie and coffee, lots of different weather and road conditions and a fantastic days riding, on a fantastic Tiger! :ride:
There is no reason "not" to have a good weekend in North Otago, see you all here in December. :niceone: Cheers John and Pip oldrider.

Hey John, instead of doing Airedale Road to Papakaio and home have you ever turned left at Weston and gone through Enfield and Ngapara to Duntroon? It's a neat wee ride. I used to do that a lot just for a Saturday morning ride when I was a yung'un.

Yes Oakie, that's my normal route in and out of Oamaru on the bike.
It was very heavy wet fog (almost drizzle) from the coast to about Aviemore and the roads through Weston, Ngapara, Duntroon, get a lot of cow shit, tractor mud etc, in other words, as greasy as a butcher's prick and dark as at night! :eek5: Cheers John.

Food for the masses? Well most of us bring something for ourselves, :beer:but if there are members who want to discuss options like last year (think HOG) then it needs organising closer to the event.
