What is the better Brand to Buy?

I am looking at 2 helmets on trade me at the mo and i was wondering which of them is the better quality

HJC CL-Max helmet with a built in speaker with 2.5mm plug for radar detector, Ipod, MP3, cellphone....etc...

Great hemet, purchased new one year ago worn it about 5 times but is a bit to big for my head.
Only very light scratches along the bottem for where it has been put down.
Comes with HJC helmet bag and box.

You have no idea of the history of those helmets....it is your noggin and you only get one. Buy the best new helmet you can afford.

You forgot to mention the brand of the second one.

I'm guessing you are looking at the Nolan though, which i would steer clear of as you can see scratch marks on it in the photo.

As for the first one, it looks in good nick but a helmet can be fucked without showing marks. Like if you drop it on a carpeted floor or down the stairs or something. And the guy reckons there are visible marks on the bottom of the lid from putting it down. On what? Tarmac?

I see that you are looking at helmets in the $100ish range. You can buy a new helmet for not much more. I bought a nice HJC helmet from the US along with a bunch of other stuff and it only cost me less than NZ$200.

The kiwi dollar is strong against the US at the moment.

Stretch your wallet a bit, search for US bike shops, find a lid you like and get a brand new one that you like the look of and will protect your head.

Neither. Brand isn't important. Fit and standards compliance are all that matter.

Oh, and don't buy a second hand helmet UNLESS it is from someone famous and going in a display cabinet as an "investment".

Fit is MUCH more important than brand, as fit determines how your head is protected in a crash.

Go and try on all the cheap helmets in a bike shop that meet your budget and buy the one that fits best.

Remember that the lining should touch as much of your skull as possible and you need to buy it tight and the lining will compress to fit over the first couple of months.

When you try it on you should expect the cheek pads to give you a fish face, the forehead to be tight and the lining should be touching just above where your skull meets your neck.

I just bought myself a new helmet recently for riding my scooter. It was a fullface FFM M7 and it was part of a clearance sale being last year's model (there is now an M8) and cost just 99.00 (http://www.forbesanddavies.co.nz/product.aspx?entryPK=2790). Fit is great and its very light at 1350g.

There are a few people here that will tell that anything that costs less than 1500 NZ pesos is a death trap, but consider that Robert Holden wore Pro helmets for many years. These were NZ made, and probably the cheapest helmet you could buy, but did the job when Robert so famously took out the Holden billboard at Manfeild. And Robert was not one to take shortcuts on safety.

its not about price when its all about your head, trust me i know. its been over a year after my accident and sometimes things still aint right.
get a helmet that fits ya head, and does it really well.

im lucky to have an HJC head shape, but they are a heavy helmet. when it comes down to it you only get one head, and it aint pretty when ya stuff it up.
try all the helmets ya can, then consider price. please!

Shop around and compare prices. I have an HJC and saved $40 by getting the best deal. Get a snug fit, NOT loose - but not so tight that it would give you a headache. You will probably find one for $130 - $140, maybe less. Full face, not open face.

Agree with the majority - DON'T get second hand! The outer shell may look OK but the inner shell could be severely damaged.
If you want to save money, go for a plain helmet - the snazzy paintjobs add$$$$. I have a plain white Nitro which cost well under 200 bucks.

Treat a helmet the same way. It is for YOUR protection, and yours only.

Only buy new.Try out a whole lot of helmets and find the one that fits best.Check out the Ride Forever website on tips on choosing a helmet.As long as the cheaper helmets meet the standards you should be fine.The more expensive helmets tend to be lighter though.
