My wife just heard on the radio.
EDIT A mechanical failure may have contributed to a fatal motorcycle crash at Pukekohe Park raceway this morning.
Two motorcyclists, who have yet to be named, were killed after they collided on the back straight in a race about 11am.
Emergency services were on the scene immediately but could not do anything for the riders.
Police spokeswoman Darragh O'Riordan said early estimates were that one of the motorcyclists was travelling about 260kmh when the crash occurred.
"It seems that the crash happened when one of the racers struck the other from behind," she told NZPA.
"We believe that the bike in front was slowing and may have had a mechanical failure, but we don't know for sure at this stage."
The motorcyclists were competing at a meeting organised by the Auckland Motorcycling Club which included the fifth round of the New Zealand Superbike Road Race Championship.

I heard no disrespectful comments, however just like last year at Puke the patient spectators are kept in the dark. We only found out via a mate's brother who heard the news whilst watching the cricket on tv. Why can't the organisers let the spectators know that a very serious accident had occurred that will require considerable time for the appropriate authorities to deal with and then give us regular updates? No one knew what the fuck was going on, hence the fact that there may have some disgruntled spectators voicing their frustration.

I would have thought multi Ambulances and Police driving on the track might have indicated that something serious was going on.
there where a few update that I heard also, but you needed to be within earshot.
I think the situation was well managed and I give credit to the organisers and particulary the emergency people involved.

Was my first time at the track in years just to watch and not be involved in the pits.
Nothing I can say on here feels right and as I walked through the pits to hear the story unfold I just felt kind of numb. To the guys and gals that were on the scene to help...I cant imagine what you are going through.
To the families of the two lost I offer my heart felt condolances.

RIP you two fellas.
Yeah I was there, saw the whole thing about to happen and could do nothing to warn ***** as the tragedy unfolded in front of me.
We were in the ambulance and trackside with the two of them in about 20 seconds. I'm so sorry that there was nothing we could do more for you two boys.
If it makes any difference to anyone that knows them, they didnt suffer at all.
RIP
We were by pit entrance and as soon as we saw your wagon, knew it was serious. I was stunned to see a second turn up. Last time I went to watch NZ racing (except Paeroa), I remember the waits while a 2nd ambo was despatched to replace the one taking someone to hospital.
It was obviously fatal (esp. when the police turned up), and as for saying it should have been put over the PA system, please have some sensitivity to the racers' friends/teams that were there. If you walked about the pits, you would've felt the subdued atmosphere.
I didn't hear anyone bitching about not knowing what was going on (either in the pits or in the grandstand, where we headed off to during the break).
I thought it was handled well, and that the crowd was fantastic.
That was a hard day. I did think about going home to do other things, but each time would hear over the PA system that it was getting closer to racing than not.
Well done to those competing in such tough conditions.
RIP to our fallen riders, you will be missed. To the teams and families - sincere condolences. I can't imagine what you're going through right now, but the community is with you in spirit and please talk to the necessary people.
Speedie, I don't know what to say, except thank you and I don't envy your job.
To the organisers, I think you did a great job today.

Sad to say but racing will go on despite this terrible terrible tragedy.
My thoughts go out to those members of the involved families and all those who had to deal with this incident today.
I've experienced the same situation in the UK when a friend died at a meeting and that meeting was stopped completely. I vividly remember the upset of the time and how it affected all the members of the organising body on the day with many in tears.
Today i briefly spoke to a female member of the AMCC who is part of the team who runs the meeting and while she put on a brave face, behind the sun glasses there was obvious and understandable upset. Quite how the team involved managed to complete the meeting i do not know but i hope they have plenty of loving support at home tonight as i know they will be hurting.
Why we all do this sport is brought very very sharply into focus when this type of incident happens and its made me assess whether i want to be back out there but similar incidents always do.
One small crumb of comfort is that the riders involved died doing what they loved in sport.

Puke gives me the shits!! I've seen/heard/been told of horrible accidents there. I don't know why we don't race at Taupo. Be done with Puke.
Unfortunately, the nature of this crash could have happened at damn near any other track in NZ.
I was numbed by what happened, but had to go out in the very next race in Sidecars. I was ok at first in the dummy grid, until my passenger told me some of the horrible details. I just wanted to vomit. I still feel absolutely sick.
I still don't know who they were yet, but as I sit here typing this, all I'd like to do right now is just give their families a great big hug!
Really, really sad news.
Makes you take stock of your own life - Gave both my kids at the track a big cuddle when I initially heard the news. Didn't help them, but made me feel better.

One other thing---
To all those involved on an 'official' level, DO make sure you talk about the matter to wife, girlfriend, boyfriend, parent or whoever.
My job used to be dealing with fatal road crashes day in day out and family liaison, its important NOT to bottle up any thoughts or feelings in relation to an incident such as this.
DON'T underestimate the affect it can have on you and your families and use any help offered.
Take care all.

I have to agree with this after being involved with a fatality as an official. The family (and myself) benefitted from being able to discuss things. I was hesitant at first but a psychologist I went to see for support suggested writing my thoughts on a condolence card as a starter with my contact details included. The family appreciated the opportunity to talk further.
It is really important that people are not pushed into discussing detail of the "incident" if they do not want to. If you want to talk, talk with someone you trust when you are ready.

Look around you next time YOU go for a ride and look how little is between you and the grim reaper.. 2 mm of fibre glass, 2mm of leather and a whole lot of luck - this shit happens - every fuckin day...
For christ sake - why do you think the HD chopper guys go in for the whole David mann painting thing IF they have been riding any length of time?
EVERY ride you see you mates riding as shades at you elbow and guess what - no matter how hard you try - you can't wash out the blood from some events.. I think the account MNZ set up after Shaun's accident is a for all injured/fallen riders. You just need to put the riders name as a reference to ensure that it goes to the correct person/family. I'll do some checking.

NewstalkMonday March 10, 05:28 AM
Biking deaths a terrible tragedy
Motorcycling New Zealand says the deaths of two motorcyclists at Pukekohe Park Raceway south of Auckland, was purely a racing accident and there was not much that could have been done to prevent the tragedies.
The men collided on the back straight during the final round of the Motorcycling New Zealand Road Race Championship.
President Sandra Perry says an investigation has been launched and Motorcycling NZ will take on board any recommendations arising from the coroner's inquest. She says those taking part in the sport are aware it can be dangerous, but officials will definitely look at anything which could improve the situation.
shocking news, my thoughts go out to their famillies.

Can only concur. I never knew the riders personally but seeing the number of posters who did and reading their comments makes the tragedy more "real", I guess.
We hear of motor vehicle accidents every day, and depending on the circumstances, we may think the victim deserved his end, or usually we remain relatively unaffected because we didn't know them, but everyone has family and friends who are affected.
While we all agree that racing is not a "safe" sport, it is obvious here that these were good people and good riders. This seems to fall genuinely into the "accident" category and not due to recklessness on either racer's part, so my sympathies and condolences are for all affected by this tragedy.

This time the race was stopped and two people [god rest their souls] left this mortal coil. Had two people died at MotoGP or Superbikes the uproar would still be ringing in our collective ears, and off hand comments like 'that's racing' would not dare be uttered.
As to whether Derek and Phil would want racing to continue as they looked down on families and friends in mind numbing despair, the depths of which are only felt a few times in a life time.....well?....we cannot make that call we don't know what they wanted and never will!

Thoughts are with the good folks Phil and Derek leave behind.
I was lucky enough to have a little to do with Phil in recent months, from the day he turned up at the VMCC Winter series on his bright pink Gixxer 1K, then on Waitangi day he spent the day with the WBP team testing his new 600. All weekend he was constantly pooping over to our pit to chat about how we were going and what was going on. Thoughts are with his family and also the HardOnRacing team who Phil raced with.
Derek I didnt know that well but remember him as an all round nice guy of motorcycling. Always aggreeing to the thankless job of riders rep throughout the winter series and a man who lived for his bike racing.
There's a hole left in our sport rom this tradgedy.
RIP guys.

Phil was an awesome character. He had a way about him that made me respect him immediately after he had introduced himself to me. He struck me as a guy who would do anything to make things better for you. Recently he had come over to my place on a few occasions to measure up my ZX6R for crash bungs (3b's) and to have a general chin wag. He was so excited about getting into racing and was trying to convince me to as well; explaining how much safer the track is considering my recent accident I had on the road. He had both his children with him when he came over...I'm just completely stunned at this news.
To Phills loved ones, I have no words to give you that is likely to help. I pray that you feel some sense of calm about you as you try and deal with your loss. Phil was a great guy who was so passionate about life and especially bikes. Rest in peace knowing you have touched at least one life... I appreciated the input you gave me with my bike and I will miss your friendliness you always showed.

we've all lost a part of our motorcycling comradeship here, tis a shame.
The risks are there, there's no doubt about that, and while its hard to justify the price Derek and Phil have paid they all knew it was there.
When one buys a $5 dollar meal the rewards, like the cost, is different to when one buys a $35 meal. Its the same with a sport that has the risks that motorcycle racing has. The investment these guys made in their sport was bigger than many other pastimes, the rewards were bigger too, both in terms of the charge they got on the track and the friendships that were made along the way. That's why they were there; and why we all choose to grab hold of something with known risks.
Their was no callousness in continueing the racing that day whatsoever, to those who feel this way get off your computer and go for a ride and think of it as the link between driving a car and flying through the skies. Think of these guys and all the others who've met their end enjoying themselves on a ride too and remind yourself that you are richer for knowing these people at their best, and richer too for being able to look back on them after they're gone; despite the pain of losing them, and still smile. It'll make your life and your attitudes to your Motorcycling mates a bit better I'm sure and then you'll realise why we're all riding and why they kept on racing that day.
I'm happy to have known Derek personally and enjoyed his company as many others have too, I'm unhappy but still strong enough to turn to our mates and be happy that we all knew him with a smile on my dial.
to both Derek's and Phil's friends and families take care.

Sad times. RIP fallen riders. Does not seem fair that something we love can cause so much grief. This chosen sport can be a harsh mistress.

Condolences to the family and friends of the fallen riders, It's not an easy time for anyone concerned
For me it it bought back the memories of the fatal crash in our race last year and the effect it had on the family, friends, competitors and meeting
Despite what some people are saying we were kept quite well informed over the PA about the delays although there was no specific detail other than that there had been a serious crash and I don't think there should have been more announced than that, I think the club handled a difficult time very well
I'd also like to extend a huge thanks to the marshals and medics who had to deal with the aftermath, incidents like this make me appreciate you lot even more than normal

That TV3 on demand coverage annoys me no end.
Two peoples interviews were shown. Neither were there at the time of the accident.
Both were among the vultures speculating at the markers when the crowd were moved back to, both advised they had not seen what happened, had just arrived. Both were annoyed at getting "No comment". They had no right.
Big ups to the emergency team, the marshalls on 4, the officials involved, all the other marshalls who came over to assist with the clean up and crowd control and of course the Police. Especially those who had to put aside thier feelings to continue to do thier job of making the remainder of the event as safe as possible.
To the families of the riders my deepest condolences on your tragic loss.
Words cannot convey the sadness.

They had no right.I agree.... it has reminded me again, that some things always have to be about certain people. They cant step back and see that this has nothing to do with them... yes you feel bad, yes you feel sad, but please show respect.
The accident, even though I was not there, as Kick says, made me think a lot of the young man who passed away at last years event.
Huge condolences to the family and freinds.
Huge thank you's to the marshals and the medics.
A terrible thing for the sport.

There are no words to describe how I feel.
My heart goes out to Derek and Phils families. I didn't know phil personally but understand his passion for a sport that bonds all of us in the same way. How can one not respect that commitment and how can all not be affected by it.
RIP guys, never to be forgotten.

In a club that has been welcoming, encouraging and supportive; the Delboy has been a standout. It has been an all too brief honour to know him. Never short of encouragement and advice to this novice racer, and he always had time for a bit of cheek with my daughters. We've lost a great mate, a funny bastard (check out his avatar), and a leader who happened to be handy on a motorcycle. It wouldn't suprise me if Wikipedia now has a picture of Delboy in the definition of "Good C*%#".
Let's put on a good turn out in his honour on the memorial ride.
