Dear Abby
Late last year I sold my Suzuki s83 1400 (see KB calendar Sept 2008). Since then the Honda 900 Hornet has been my main form of transport, but in the meantime I have been contemplating what to replace the cruiser with. The wife has the car (I don't have one) I ride every day and I like to mix up what I ride. I did not want another cruiser and the Hornet does everything so bloody well....... Well after much deliberation and test rides on a few different bikes, on Friday I paid for and rode away a (my) Suzuki Burgman K7 AN400. I am not sure what possessed me to do it and I am concerned that I may actually enjoy ownership of this 'bike'.
Already I have noticed that "motorcycle" riders now ignore me, and I am concerned that my wife and kids will be so ashamed that they will leave me.
Abby, my question is this - what after market axhaust and other mods do you recommend I fit (I am considering importing a LeoVince full system) and do Power Commander have a product for the 4Burger?
Thank you
tri boy

Dear Timo,
Burgers make you fat. Change your diet.
(enjoy the new toy, but live with riders not waving at you.)

Insane1 - thanks for the PM and words of encouragement.
Edbear - nah I couldn't get my head around the 650. Most cages should be able to be taken at the lights. Had a little 250 bandit have a crack this morning - but he was not up to it.
Tri Boy - this will appeal to you - took the 4burger in for its 1000km service this morning and the loaner was a Triumph Street Triple. Got me thinking again......
In the meantime I will keep taking the pills and ointment.
Thanks for the bling whoever gave me it!

Just enjoy it. Nothing smashes the brotherhood of bikers myth quite like buying a bike that doesn't say "look at my enormous gentleman." Ride your own ride.

A Burgman 400 has a frame-mounted engine and is therefore not technically a scooter. Good choice. One of these was the first bike home in the 2006 Grand Challenge. Enjoy it!

You have reminded me of another factor to determine what is a scooter or not a scooter. Cute chicks and gays will ride scooters such as your 2nd picture. On that basis a Burgman is NOT a scooter.

We burger riders take a bit of flak but they're good bikes. Today I took mine to Helensville via the Old North Rd and then on to Shelly Beach. Handled it with no problems at all. Got mine in Dec 07 and have now done 2000km and never regretted buying it and at 75 mpg it's not too bad. Comfortwise it almost as good as my old BMW ( as far as I am concerned, others no doubt will disagree). I really like the feet forward cruising position, good for the long distances.
I too looked around and with Insanes help the decision was pretty easy.
Regardless of what I ride I wave and most wave back. A lot dont realise it's a scooter till they look in the rear view mirror!
My parents are in Glendowie so I might see you cruising around.
Cheers
Mark

If I was in the market for a scooter, I'd be tossing a coin between the Burgman 400 and the Majesty 400.

I wouldn't bother with the exhaust. My brother has just put one on his, and it's made it slower.
A better mod is changing the roller weights.
There's a burgervan forum, if you google it. It's 'mercin based, and most of them on it are god bothering losers, but there's a couple on that have some knowledge. I was going to get a LV can for mine. $550ish, IIRC. The J Costa Variator seems like a better investment to me.

Let me know if you go for the variator, it does look like a worthwhile modification. 'We' could get 2 at the same time and when you have worked how to fit it on your bike you could then do mine??? I can provide beer, sage advice, and encouragement.

I'm not getting one. It pushes up the revs at which it takes off. I spend most of my time filtering past cages, so would end up coasting more.
If you've got money to burn on it, I've found a Givi screen to be worth its weight in gold.

could you post a photo of the screen please and any comments on it - i.e. where you got it from, fitment, price etc. I find the wind is deflected directly on the helmet making it noisier than my naked bike. It was the reason I almost didn't buy one. thx. tim.

A bike rider at work busted his left ankle pretty badly last year and since then has had trouble working the gear shift. It was so bad he sold his bike (Triumph Bonneville). I've been on at him to get a maxiscooter, but he wouldn't consider it, never, not under any circumstances. Now he's discovered he can cope with the gear change on dirt bikes and has got himself a posy Suzuki 400 supermoto. It's a great pity, because he would look much cooler on a Burgman!

Maxi's in general pretty much rock, I just had the pleasure of riding a Honda Silverwing 600 up to leigh... an absolute pleasure to tour on, comfortable and grunty... enough. also had no probs filtering through traffic on it, felt like riding a tricycle getting back on my UZ haha

That almost deserves a big red bling
NOBODY, ever, at all, looks cool on a Burgman
If you think looking cool is important, and can't ride a real bike, get a Vespa

Heh. Unless by "much cooler" he really meant "much less like he gives a toss what the fashionisti think."

Not everyone that has a scooter can't ride a bike. I choose to not ride a bike to work every day. A maxi scooter uses half the fuel of a half decent bike, costs thousands less to buy, doesn't require maintaining every weekend, doesn't eat a rear tyre every fifteen hundred miles, is comfy for the missus to sit on the back of for two hours every day, is automatic (making filtering far easier) etc.
And all this time, by bike is waiting in the garage for the weekend, when it can be ridden without worrying about how much sh1t it picked up on the road during the week.
Whats you current charge out rate for fitment there Matt?
A screen? I wouldn't charge.. But could supervise you doing your own :)
It's really not a hard job at all.
They're $220 from Motomail. Far quieter, better weather protection, and slightly more mpg, if you worry about things like that.

Well I've never ridden one, and I'm guessing they are a pretty useful set of wheels. But, no matter which way I look at it...........IT AIN'T COOL.
