Hey Bikers. Has anyone done the Gisbourne loop - SH35 and SH2 ?

From looking on Google Maps It seems as a nice peace of road.:sunny:
I'm wondering the following:

Is has it got heaps of twisties ?
Are the roads in good condition?
Are there gravel sections or is it all sealed?
How many Km is the whole loop?
Can it be done in ONE day from point to point - say Gisbourne back to Gisbourne?:)

Cheers All :done:

If you are talking about Opotiki round the cape to Gisborne and back to Opotiki via the Waioeka Gorge...then yes, it is sealed the whole way (barring roadworks).
Twistie heaven and lots of us have done it. I think it is about 500kms and can be done in a day. You will know you've had a decent ride tho...

Plenty have, I am not one of them. I have done Opotiki to Gisbone via the cape, and Gisborne to Opotiki via the Gorge, jus tnot the same trip.

Yes Plenty of twisties
Road is in Reasonable condition apart from small patches.
Sealed all the way apart from road works patches, unless you choose to do the bit from TeAraroa to the light house at East cape (that bit is gravelled).
from Memory 320 Km from Opotiki to Gisborne via East Cape, 140 via Waioeka Gorge, therefore 460 ish sounds fair (note google maps just told me 465km).
Fuel available at Opotiki, Te Araroa, Ruatoria (slight detour), Tologa bay and Gisborne (all of those on weekdays) not sure how you would fair on Saturday afternoon or Sunday at the smaller places.

Certainly do-able as a day trip. I'm going to do Tauranga to Tauranga via East cape & Gisborne one day.

Note the spelling of Gisborne (no u) :done:

Enjoy.

I'd love to do this route sometime in the near future. I've got friends in Gisborne who are overdue for a visit. Any good places to stop if you don't wanna do the whole trip at once? :baby:

Brian's Place in Tokamaru Bay is absolute tops! If you are a BBH member it only costs $25 a night and the facilities are great, simple, but great. the people (Brian and Liz) are absolutely top notch.

We spent 3 nights there after Christmas and if we hadn't got other commitments would have stayed for our full two week holiday.

For another opinion though I found the road really tedious, non stop twisties, BUT, I was in the the 'cage', and it has less horsepower than my bike! 64/68! The surface was very, very patchy though so enjoy, but be careful, the nearest ambulance is bloody hours away! :ride:

I'm tempted to join in on this. I live near whakatane - folks are welcome to overnight here on the way through. Theres a couch and a double airbed, a trampoline out back, and plenty of grass lol.

Delphinus: Did you see the bit about fuel availability ?

Ive done the coast road plenty of times, infact I drive it around 2 times a week in a cage for work. Roads getting a hamering from Logging trucks...there are tones that use SH35 as the coast is full of forestry blocks.

If you take your time and keep alert its well worth the trip. I'd do it every weekend if I could. There is a St Johns ambo at Te Puia which is within an hours reach of most of the coast road. Gisborne has tones of great places to relax...depends what you want really ie View, water, pools, flash, modest etc etc.

Gisborne is awesome mate, well worth a visit...infact I saw a KB'er in town the other day, she was riding a BMW...not sure who that was!

I wouldn't mind doing the loop did it years ago on a pushbike in 3 days. Is there much police presence on those roads?

Last time i was up that way we stayed at Hicks bay motel, Billion dollar views and a great feed!

There is so much you can look at, the ride could take days if you had nothing to rush for......

I find this useful for when I go east.

http://www.gasolinealley.co.nz/website/public/index.cfm

Gasoline Alley seem to do most of the fuel on the Cape. Phone ahead to check on opening hours etc.

hey.. I wonder if that was me?? :blip: I was riding a silver BMW R1100R. My kb patch is on the right sleeve of my leather jacket. Stayed in Gisborne Monday night, after riding round the east Cape from Opotiki. :Punk:

ps: ya didn't come & say hello!! :spanking:

Tis an awesome road TOTO :first: but PLEASE make sure your bike is in at least the left hand wheel track (if not further to the left!!!) going round right hand corners.. shit.. the way some of them trucks hurtle round there.. any whiteline huggers.. wouldn't have time to blink  let alone move their bike/body outta the way in time... :eek5: before splat!

Enjoy!!! :2thumbsup & be safe!

Borrowed a K7 thou and rode to Gisborne Friday morning. Did East Cape then up to Tauranga Sat. East Cape was a great ride with lots of natives in thier natural habitat. Saw a head on between 2 cars near Te Puke.

Trip report over.

I'll second that, we just did a North Island trip including the Waioeka Gorge, utterly fanatastic!!!
