View Full Version : Kickaha & Divvo Do Pukekohe

Kickaha
11th March 2008, 12:12
We’d left the van with all our gear in Palmy North after the Manfeild round and flown home and one of Steve Brons crew (Jeff top bloke that he is) was driving it all up to Pukekohe for us, so early Friday morning I head off to Divvos place then to the airport for the trip to Auckland, I even had to take my shoes off to go through security.

Arriving in Auckland there’s the inevitable wait for the bags and Divvo is trying to get a hold of Jeff and see where he is, turns out he is waiting at Air New Zealand Domestic which would be fantastic if it wasn’t for the fact we were flying Qantas.

We shoot off to pick up some brakes and then head out to the track and get unloaded and set up, a change of gearing is on the cards and after knocking off one of Steve Brons sprockets, Divvo notices some oil in the catch tray and while it’s only a few drops decides to sort that out.

We’re not bothering with the Friday practice as we’re so awesome we don’t really need it.

I head off with Whitetrash as I’ve booked a bed for the weekend, up early the next day and WT is reorganising the van to fit another seat in and with Patch driving we set off to the track with Patch showing off his slipstreaming skills down the motorway

Saturday

The oil leak fix is still underway so we miss out the first practice and get it sorted for the second one

Practice 2
We head out for a couple of easy laps and then start dialling it up, it’s lighting up over the bumps coming up the hill and the ribcage is getting a hammering down the front straight, after 8 laps we pull in have a quick chat and head back out and stuff up the chicane straight away, we’re coming up on the #666 outfit of Brian/Darren and they get in our way over the hill another lap and the chequered flags out and we pull in to find we’re doing consistent 1.10 sec laps about .5 sec of Adam/Vince and 6th on the grid, it’s pushing the front a bit exiting the hill and we’re using all the track but it’s all good

Race 1
We’re on Row 3 on the outside and as the lights go out we get the hell start, straight past Adam/Vince and Leighton/Louise, it’s pretty crowded into Turn1 and then when we hit the back straight Leighton/Louise open the taps and go past like we’re chained to a post:bye:, lap 2 and Adam/Vince get back in front up the inside at the hairpin, two laps later we close them down through the chicane and I’m cursing the lack of HP as we hit the back straight, they get a bit loose out of the hairpin and we’re take them into the left hander and are in front again over the hill, Divvos holding it a bit tight at the hairpin and I see them come alongside but we go in deeper under brakes and hold the position another lap and there fuel pump packs up and we cruise home in 5th

The oil leak has reappeared around where the selector shaft used to come out the left hand side of the engine, so we rip the body off and Divvo sets to work draining the oil and getting the knead it out to fix it while I bugger off for tea and bed (and a bit of time listening to cowpoos talks shit)

Sunday
Oil leak all fixed, we toss the new Avon tyre on to scrub it in and do a easy three laps with another change of gearing

Race 2

We’re all geared up and ready to head to the dummy grid when the tragic accident in the 600 class happens and the race is temporarily postponed while the police do the crash scene investigation

A few hours later we’re up and on the grid, Adam/Vince have supposedly had a domestic and packed up for the day, Brian/Darren promote themselves up a grid position into the spot Adam/Vince vacated and then beat us into Turn 1 off the start, we didn’t get it quite right this time and it takes until Lap 3 when we get a better run onto the back straight before we pull along side and make the pass into the hairpin, he tries coming back a lap later but we hold him out and drop him off to take another 5th

Race 3
A carbon copy of the previous race start, except this time we get the good drive over the top of the hill pull alongside Brian/Darren, as we come down into turn one I’m remembering last year and the Lawrence’s doing the outside pass on us at this spot and hoping Divvo will do the same, side by side we turn in and then we go past, it cocks the line up for the chicane a bit but we hit the back straight in front, they try an outside move at the hairpin but we have them covered and then drop him off for a 4th place finish

A good finish to the season and we're pretty satisfied after the disappointing first round, we’ve gone faster with less HP and better handling at every track we’ve been to and at Puke where we thought the HP factor would kick in we had our best results

Congratulations to Steve and Denny for their title win:first:

Thanks to Steve, Jeff, Jared and especially Great Uncle Bogaria for all the help and support during the season and the lovely Joni for putting up with all the time away, in the shed etc etc and Whitetrash and Riffraff for putting me up (or should that be putting up with me) once again:yes:

Hmm, I was happy to see Kick home again... I was missing him, but when Sootie the black cat went and sat on the pavement waiting for him to come home and did want to do much else for 2 days... I became a bit sad, the poor little bugger.:(

So another Nationals has come and gone... but this one was a big one for Divvo and Kick, getting the new chair and taking the season so come to grips with all the differences between the LCR and the Busa powered old chair. I will be honest and say by the end of the South Island rounds I was a little worried as they were a little slower than expected.... however I am soo happy for both of them to see their satisfaction after Puke.

Well done guys! A great result. :2thumbsup

I reckon next year’s nationals should be great.

Roll on Timaru next month. :wari:

Well done on the racing although you and Septimus looked a little lonely out there.

Can't wait for the next year when hopefully we've got Pig and Goober back again. And of course the lovely Jo :D

Oh they can afford one allright, They just cant see the sense in it when their sidecar is faster than most LCR's.
Divvo the homo decided that seeing as our 20 year old heap of crap was so damn quick, he wanted to believe that it was an LCR to console himself for going slower this year than he was last year, So he put a sticker on it in the dead of night.
The photo taken was prior to it being modified to say "little chequebook racing"
Did you say you were doing 1.10s?
In the last race when i had my first ever race start from the drivers seat, i got down to 1.12s straight away with no practice.
(7 secs slower than the scrivmeister on 1.05s')

1.10 in the first practice, down to a best 1.07 during the race, a second faster than our best lap last year, a few more Hp next year might help us get a bit closer to the front bunch

1.12 you would have been dicing with Richie and Timmy?

Dude!!!!, I kicked Ritchie & Timmys ass!!!!
Started on the back row & put the move on them under brakes into the hairpin & kept them within earshot for the rest of the race.
Ritchie said afterwards, "1 more lap & i wouldda had you" But he didint realise i had 30 metres up my sleeve braking into the hairpin every lap after id passed him.
It was big fun & felt good to go up against a fellow swinger that started racing the same year as me (1987)

Oh yeah, I forgot to tell ya Bob, I had the flu at Puke and also the shits, and the burn on my leg was making me only race at 70%.
Our tyre pressures were all wrong too, as was our toe-in, not to mention a loose chain, faulty kill switch, a blocked injector, another faulty spark plug, a bad batch of fuel, no water in the radiator, the seat unit came loose, the deck had oil on it that made you slide around on it, your leathers were too tight in the crotch, and oh yeah, I forgot to clean my visor before my last race.

Other than that - we were on fire dude!!!

As for our little chequebook racing, we only spent $5000 on absolutely everything to do with our racing!!! The biggest cost was the continual chem-i-weld for our water leak!!! :shit:

How much was the number 77 budget?? More than $5000 just in tyres!!!
For only a second or so faster lap times, and in two years of racing at the nationals (23 races in total) our team won 12 races - thats over half!!
Do we get value for money??? Abso-f@cking-lutely!!!!

As we don our 18 year old leathers and 10 year old helmets, we do begrudge not having spent more money to have the same amount of fun.
