Have just moved up from a GB400 to a GS1200. I have found them quite similar; two wheels and start with "G".
What tips do people suggest to running it in? The bike shop is suggesting using synth oil at the 1000km service but I would rather us a good mineral until at least 10k to let it run in proper. Suggested oils, change period? Other comments?

Well hows about a simi syn oil. A mate brought one of the GS1200's when they 1st came out, and the run in prosedure that Suzuki have is silly as Honda dont have one at all. So I say ride it normaly as you would if it had 10,000k on it but if ya not sure then duckmans thery sounds good to me.
BTW you can get some rather nice extras for the SS mate had a dark tint screen, belly pan, single seat cowl and a Kerker can, which had it sounding sweet..... hey which part of town ya in?

Good idea with the mineral oil.
There some real idiots working in bikeshops these days. Had a mate with a new TL (when they first came out), some bikeshop idiot advised him to run fully synthetic after run in. Fucked the clutch withn 1000k's. Guess third gear wheelstands didn't help, but still, fuckin idiot.

Yet Honda reconmend the GPS simi syn in there bikes and I have had no probs.... ok Its a blend but even with the Suzuki I bet they dont say to use a dino oil in ther sport bikes?
What milage do you consider 'run in'???

Be nice for the first 800k's, then thrash it.
My vtr is a ex-demo, so i know it would have been ridden hard. 110,000k's later, still keeps me happy.

And have a read of this-
Here is what I found...
Link - MotoMan (http://mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm)
had a read of Toyota's 1.6 4AGE Atlentic race engine run in instruction as well.... and its similar in line to what the above link mentions...
Zapf, have you got a link to the 4age (http://www.mikeconte.com/cars.htm) running in instructions?
I had a look on Hasselgren Race Engines homepage but wasn't very informative.

I'd stay well away from full synthetic or even semi for up to 2-3 thousand k's or you could possibly glaze the bores. I ran "normal" Castrol for 5000 k's. Honda don't advocate full synthetic in their machines although I ran it with no apparent ill-effects for a while after the bike was run in. I use Motul semi-synthetic now.

But my Honda dealer reconmends Castrol GPS a semi synth from day one and 1st oil change at 1000k..... so thats what happened, emmm Motul... good shit.

I DONT THINK CASTROL HAS NADE GOOD OIL SINCE BP BOUGHT THEM , THEIR 2 STROKE OIL IS DIFFERENT FOR SURE. ALSO HONDA HAVE A DEAL WITH CASTROL SO THEIR GOING TO PUSH CASTROL. MOTUL IS GOOD , BUT I USE THAT MOBIL 1 FOR BIKES, AND IVE THRASHED ALOT OF BIKES AND HAVENT HAD A FAILURE YET

IM NOT TROLLING VTR 1000 ARE NOT VERY FAST COMPARED TO WHAT IM USED TO , THE LATEST VTR WILL BE SLOWER THAN A 96 GSXR750T OR A ZZR1100 OF ANY YEAR, THE VTR1000 WILL BE LUCKY TO KEEP UP WITH AN EARLY GSXR600 UNLESS YOUR TALKING ABOUT AN SP1 OR SP2 BUT EVEN THEY ARE BLOODY SLOW LOOK AT JASON MACEWANS FACTORY BACKED ONE OLD GSXR600s WERE KILLING IT AT PUKEKOHE AND MACEWAN IS A GOOD RIDER SORRY GREAT RIDER

Nothing in it on the road, on the track yes the VTR would get blown away.
I've had 260k out of my VTR, same as TL.
Over 6000rpm TL fucks off, where the Vtr is flat, below this prety equal or Vtr could be a little better.
Remember it's the rider not the bike, lots of fast riders out their on old shiters.

I suppose I might be able to find it again. don't have the link anymore. PM me if you really need it. But it basiclly goes like this, warm up the engine run the engine in increasing rpm stages never letting it sit still at a set rpm, after the 10~20mins then race it as you would on the circuit. dump the oil for new ones and its ready. But keep in mind that those engines were build for power, not lenght of service. So expect them to be rebuild every 10'000 k's.
And they are 1.6L NA's putting out 250hp.

What method did you end up using to run in your SV?

I dropped my oil & filter at 70kms, then 300kms, then 800kms(mineral). When the shop did the 1k service they saw how clean the engine was & went straight to motul 5100 semi instead of waiting till the 6k service. I've stayed with 5100 since & I'm on 14k or so.

Thanks for the comments. Have been taking it quiet (up to 1200km now), varying revs. Was down to Ashburton last weekend and on the short bit of open road before home, gave it a bit of a blast in third and forth (theres a power band at around 6k rpm I hadn't found before) and yes the speedo stays on 180. Slowed to 50km on entering town to see a car had been pulled up by a mufti just ahead. Well thems the breaks - good of cans to hide the radar.

And you will notice at 180k the bike will grind to a hult...... but there is an easy fix but the speedo will still only show 180.
heres a pic of the GS1200ss with the extra crap on it..... looks good ayehttp://image09.webshots.com/9/5/96/77/101359677evXBVG_ph.jpg

Hi Dangerous
The reply above to area of Chch was supposed to be in response to your earlier post. Haven't sussed the quick reply bit yet.
The speed limiter on the GS has been removed so it goes over 180 but the speedo doesn't.

ohh yeah good point about the Castrol/Honda thing, bit like the Showa/Honda thing... crap suspension in the VTR, you guesed it ShowaShowa suspension isn't crap just because it's Showa. There are some very good Showa forks and shocks fitted to the sportier Hondas AND to some Italian bikes now, but the ones fitted to the VTR are budget items. F'rinsatnce - a hot mod for the VTR is to fit the 929 front end, which makes a huge difference to the suspension, handling etc. And for VFRs, fitting components from the 600s improves the damping.
