Was in Wangamata last week and spots an old bike across the road.
Looked in good cond..turned out to be an old Royal Enfield..250 i think.
5 mins latter another one turns up..another minter.the guy gets off and goes into a shop,,heres me perving on the bike and the owner comes out.. and says....well,,have u figured out whats different.
well it turned out to be a diesel.450cc. single.1999.but still had the old look. he bought it in from India.sure sounded different...150 MPG.
Turned out there was a Enfield rally on..and about 20 of these bikes turned up.

There're a lot of them around these days. The importer is in Albany and you can buy them new for around $8k. Most are the 500cc models, but last time I spoke to him he said they were hoping to get a few of the diesel's in.

Not sure about road tax for them, does anyone know if they are exempt?

Not sure about the road tax...its the one thing i didnt ask him
recond it cost him a fortune to get compliance and vinned.
also told me that the crate had a bit of moss on it ...from India
cost him $500 for MAF to burn it.

Great looking aren't they?
Built very robust to handle Indian roads and conditions.
When I can afford it I plan on getting a 500 Bullet to add to the stable.
Pretty well the same 1955 model with some modern improvements. You get to ride a "newish" classic with all the feel of the original bikes.
