I crashed tonight. I was on my way home from work, riding along Remuera Road coming up to the speed-camera before meadowbank road. I was planning on changing into the left lane and was checking my mirror. There were cars on my inside so instead of changing lanes I continued on. When I looked in front traffic had slowed noticably. When I hit the car in front of me I was probably only doing about 35kph and the car I hit was doing about 10kph, then I was on my left side, and sliding down the road.

I got my wife to come and pick me up and take me to the A&E, where I got a thorough check over.

Damage to me
#Bruised hip
#Dislocated thumb and possible ligament damage.

Damage to bike
#Exhaust rooted
#Handlebars Bent
#rev-meter thingy rooted

To be honest I'm more worried about the bike, as it is my only means of transport, and only having third party insurance means I am completely rooted. I am just recovering from a virus that had me bedridden for a month, and those medical bills plus my xray and A&E bills and a job that pays very little means I am going to be riding the bus or catching the train for a while.

I guess I have learnt my lesson about minimising the amount of time I spend looking in my mirrors, and making sure I dont get careless. I was very silly, and I will be taking a shitload more care in the future.

The people I hit weren't worried about their car, just about me. I have had my faith in humanity restored, they sat with me and made sure I was OK until my wife came. Also to the kind lady who was driving behind me, and who leapt out of her car and helped me pick up my bike - thank you.

So, if anyone has a spare srx250 (or maybe a tzr/fzr) front end lying around that I can buy cheaply, or knows someone who can make me a new exhaust for a reasonably low price please let me know. I'm not able to spend much, but I will be able to get a few dollars together.

Luckily my mums place was only a short ride from where I binned, so I managed to ride it to her place. It was ok to ride, but the fact that the doctors had just popped my left thumb into its socket made it hard to change down gears (I can manage clutchless shifting up through the gears, but not down) Bike didnt seem to have any major handling issues. Thanks for the offer of helping me fix it if I can get the parts, I'm pretty useless mechanically, but I can provide beers and steak on the bbq.

'S'not a Granpa Scorpio. That was the XT225. The SRX was a different design fork. Never went anywhere apart from the XT350 . A pity. It is a veyrry nice engine indeed.

It is a weird system, two carbs shaing one float bowl. On the SRX600's apparently you could replace the setup with the ones from a Kawasaki GPX250, I dont know if anything similar could be done on the 250's.

:argh:Sorry to hear about the bin mate....

Few days and the thumb wont feel so bad, bit of a straighten here and there and you should be back on the road hopefully!

I found after a week with a broken left arm i could ride my CBX years ago

When ya just got to use it as daily transport anything is possible!

I am a bit far away to be much help...

Sorry to hear about your off mate. I know what it's like to be pretty much broke then have something happen to add to your financial woes! I'm also a bit far away to be of any help, but best of luck in getting it pieced back together. :)

I almost had a couple of crashes early on doing the same thing. I'm not sure if it's the best thing to do, but now what I do is cover the front brake and clutch, do a quick head check but try and keep the front car in my peripheral vision. I tend to move to the left part of the lane at that point as well, not only so I can make a quick lane change, but so that if I look back and the cars have all stopped I can stuff it down the gap.

Ouch! Glad you are going to be okay. It's good to hear that there were so many decent folk on scene to help you out. Heal well.

Thanks to everyone for their best wishes, looks like the bike can be sorted relatively cheaply- largely due to Ixions generosity.

It sucks to be caught out by people slamming on their brakes before a speed camera, I really should have expected it, and even if it wasnt expected, I should have left a large enough gap so that I could stop in time.

I just hope that people learn from my mistake, I know that I will be increasing my following distance, and making sure that my headchecks are as quick as possible.

When I crashed in East Tamaki I had cars just driving around me while I lay there on the road, it really sucks and you lose a lot of faith in people. At least now I know I'll be fine so long as I only bin in wealthy suburbs.
