View Full Version : 08 KLR650 restricted?

Just reading on the klr650net forums how the 08s were restricted by way of 2 holes in the carb slider restricting power output. Apparently its because the aussies were sent Euro models & had to be rectified by the dealers at point of sale. Are the kiwi 650s the same does anyone know?
Anyone bought any protection bars to fit over the radiator & if so were they bought local & are they needed (now that is a stupid question!!) Ok more like would you put the ugly bars over the beautiful plastic?

Haven't pulled the carb apart in my one yet but power seems to be adequate - in acceleration it is about on par with my mates DR650 which has had some mods (exhaust, airbox, jetting and a fair bit of weight stripped off). My KLR is dead stock. Max speed seen so far is around 150, but it was getting pretty vibey - it seems happiest at around 120 -130. May improve with more kms on it, only done 5000 so far. Quasi has one also and he has done over 20,000 so he would be the go-to guy for long term questions.
The side protection bars I've seen pictures of look bloody horrible, accept that the bike fully gassed up weights over 190kgs and when it falls over, something is going to break. A low speed drop with mine broke the bottom mounting lug of the right side panel, nothing a bit of duct tape could fix.
If you really want side bars, Damon at Cycleworks in Lower Hutt was measuring up another '08 for them, so he could give you ideas and prices

Well Not quite 20,000kms, hitting about 13,000 km/hr so far.
Agree best cruising speed is 120 - 130 kms an hour, if it is restricted I wouldnt bother changing it, nothing at all wrong with the power delivery on the bike in anyway.
I think our bikes are Canadian spec anyway?
Without doubt one of the most versatile bikes Ive ever had, and in actual fact the best in its class, especially in consideration of the pricetag.
For your interest Mods Ive done and about to do
Centre stand
Fork Brace

hey quasi, were did you purchase fork brace

And what was happening that made you need the brace? I know the old KLRs had weedy forks that required bracing but the 08 fork tubes are a bit meatier.
Also, what is the preferred aftermarket muffler for a KLR that doesn't cost the earth? Am I alone in thinking that 10% of the bikes price for a muffler is just a wee bit much?

I havent got the fork brace yet but planning on one, the forks are alot better than the old ones I think 43mm now but on highway higher speed stuff they do flex slightly, nothing alarming but coming from sportsbikes I could do without it.
Re After market mufflers, not sure really but I got a outstanding quote from bros@2bros.co.nz for a two brothers pipe which would be nice.
Im thinking a KLR rally ride somewhere ?

KLR650.COM have a nice looking pipe thats comes with jet & filter kit. would be around $330 - $360 landed in NZ.
KLR rally/ride sounds great
Keep an eye on the rubber blinker mounting stalk on new klr's. just took one of mine back to shop today (it just feel off:argh:) , sounds like there is a faulty bach of them on the new klr....

Well its a bit of a struggle, I put most of my body on the ground to do it, but tend to vaporize my leathers so thats a problem.
I think Im the first to break the sound barrier on a KLR though...........as far as I know

Apparently, all 08 KLR650s have the holes in the slide.
To fix pull it out and fill with good araldite(24hr dry not 5min).
Exhausts are cheap in the us at the momment.
Supertrapp isd2 from happy-trail.com $225us was the cheapest I found, after I had bought a two brothers, $325 from morepowerracing.com.
I also bought jet kit and k &n to my door $600aus. Here, the exhaust is $640.
Mind you, I am still waiting, next week allegedly.
I am also fitting a 320mm rotor for the front. I' d already fitted braided brake line.
I bought my klr jan07, 04 model, only 31 klms, and a 3 year unlimited warranty. Couriered on it for 7 months or 30k klms.
Found it a bit gutless and bad brakes. Hopefully soon to be fixed

Got a pic of where the holes are?
On the DR you add a hole for better throttle response.

No sorry.
When I was inquiring about mods, the mechanic at my bike shop seemed to think they were pretty obvious. They are in the side of the slide. He said just fill them with araldite.
If you go to KLRWorld.com and register on the forums, they have everything you could want to do on a klr, mostly idiot proof as well. I just had a quick look but couldn't find a caeb breakdown for an 08. There are a couple of easy mods to do the carb without re-jetting. Something about fitting a few washers to the needle. With pics, step by step.
I m rejetting so dont need.

Haven't got around to pulling the carb slide out of my bike yet to check

the 2c fix - a couple of stainless washers under the needle clip. There is also a hole (somewhere) to enlarge and the pilot jet screw needs to come out a turn or so. Heaps of tips here at http://www.klr650.marknet.us/

How loud is the TwoBrothers pipe? This one is cheap at $US217
http://www.klr650.com/StudebakerMufflerRX14.html but this is reported to be too loud to put up with for extended riding

Just had all four replaced under warranty - got a letter from Lyntech that they were to be replaced. Got that done last Friday. Went out for a ride Saturday, dropped it and popped two of them out:( Hoping they will pop back in.

Whos lyntech? Did they approach you first? When you say popped them out do you mean they came off the ittle metal angle piece? One of mine did that then broke the metal bit off on te next drop.
Did they give you back the old ones:devil2:

Lyntec (no "H", my mistake) Holdings are the NZ importers/distributors of Kawasaki.
They sent me a letter stating that there was a recall on certain models and the VIN number of my bike fell within the range.
Fault was that the turn signal mounting stalk could break.
Also mentioned that LTSA have been notified of the fault so there is the possibility of not being able to re-register if the work is not carried out.
If you are concerned that your bike should be eligible for this, call 09-256 7360 and ask to speak to Wayne List, technical services manager
When I dumped the bike they came apart where the rubber flexy bit goes into the base. I'm hoping I can get it back in.
And no, I didn't get the old ones back.

Hey Crossrider, I just got a Supertrapp IDS2 from Happy Trails. Fitted up very easily, weighs next to nothing, doesn't sound too loud (in my opinion). You can "play" with the discs to adjust sound/mixture anyway. Cost $US290 to my door.

No, that'll teach me not to use tyres beyond their use-by date.

Tyres have a use-by date?
You mean you don't sell your old ones to hard up racers as slicks?
Weird.
