View Full Version : Why are us bikies/bikers so one eyed?

In a kinda laid back mellow mood and I just can't work this one out.
Why have the majority of motorcycle riders totally one eyed about their brand of bike.
The recent garbage posting by Honda got me thinking about it.
Harley riders looking down their noses at jap crap riders.
Sport bike riders thinking cruisers are crap
Euro riders not even looking at jap bikes.
honda riders thinking susuki's are shite .
hown heck did this develop?
Maybee we should all swap bikes for a couple of days
i want first dibbs on Paul In NZ's guzzie -swap for my xj lol

Good question. I can remember telling one of my friends that I was going to buy a Guzzi and the first thing he did was call it a spagghetti Harley. This from someone who had been a lifelong friend. No congrats or anything along those lines. Just slagging. Tend to think this has come from the Harley crowd and filtered down through other brands and rides. Mind you there are times on this board when I am as guilty as the next man on this. Might make one of my New Year reso's. No more slagging bikes: unless they start it. :ar15: :ar15: :ar15:
I like the old saying it's not what you ride it's 'that' you ride. Hell I'd ride with a pushbike if they could keep up.
PS
When I was in the Cali. a few years back I noticed that some of the biker drinking holes had parking reserved for Harleys, other brands had to go out the back. Might have something to do why I ride Guzzi.
Any shrinks on the board???

I lust over Italian bikes, but I'm riding a Jap at the moment. I've also got a thing for classic bikes, so ideally if I had a bit of money to put a few bikes in my garage I'd have:
Ducati Monster (which is what I'm hoping to buy next)
MV Agusta Brutale 750 :love2:
Triumph Bonneville (modern)
Norton Commando (classic)
And some sort of Cruiser - probably Japanese

I don't agree with you frosty. I started out on trail bikes (XL's and DT's) because that was the most practical bikes - gravel roads and mud and rivers ... :) A sports bike would have sucked big time for that. Then coming to uni in palmerston north I moved to a sports bike because it was more practical for the sorts of roads I needed to ride. Not too long a go I had a ride on Trumpy Thunderbird sport and was quite sceptical before riding it but after having a ride on it I was very impressed. I would love to own one - one day maybe.
For me my bikes suit my needs (Roads I ride, finances etc). I have moved from Honda's and Yamahas to a Suzuki cause that's what was available when I was looking for a bike. Maybe at some later date I'll move on to something else again.

i couldnt care less what brand i rode!
but imho generalisations are where the humour is at! so racism of bikes is all good by me because at the end of the day its all in jest!
One thing i will say is that in terms of feel, Honda gearbox/clutchs are my personal preference over anything, the gears snick in so silently and the blutches always have a nice broad grippy feel. But other then that of course they are all piles of crap that break down every 5 seconds! :@

I don't care what I ride either.
We have to realise too that we are a very small minority of road users and should be looking for ways to draw strength from all who ride two wheels. I give not a fuck whether others ride Harleys, sports bikes or scooters. As long as it's got two wheels it's OK with me and will be cheerily waved at!!

I chose a kwaka for my first bike coz my family used to own the bike shop near wellington motorcycles before they dumped a hotel or sumthing on top of it. the only reason i would choose not to get a suzuki is becoz my family would give me crap coz they are 'the enemy' no biggie tho, some suzukis look better than some of the new stuff coming out.

Personally, I have seen good, bad, and crap examples of all the brands. Also, it would seem that in thier respective histories, all bike manufacturers have produced lemons, and they've all had rippers as well. I'm not fussed as to what brand is what, as long is it is in good nick and goes well

I'd rather keep on riding what I've got then ride some one elses bike. We are all different and this is displayed clearly in what sort of bike we choose to ride. There is nothing wrong with it, except when people react poorly to peoples' opinions if they differ from their own. Yes I like Honda motorcycles, nothing wrong with that, but I do respect the fact that others prefer different rides to myself. I am a true believer that it does not matter one iota what you ride, as long as your riding. I did expect a response like I recieved to my own personal views and have found it amusing how wound up other have become over them. This does not make any of us wrong at all, but merely human.

I agree entirely Hitcher... I wave at cheerily :wavey: (or nod) at every biker I come across (although I get strange looks as I sometimes wave to them from my car .... forgetting<doh!!!@!> that I am not on my bike). :thud:
I was just commenting to someone yesterday that I had ridden up to Palmerston Nth and back for a day ride, and I saw HEAPS and HEAPS of bikes on both legs of the journey who ignored my wave :shake: ... (probably only about 6 riders waved back) .
I have found that when I rode the Suzuki (when I could get it on the road!!!) generally, most riders (including HD riders but excluding big sports bikes), waved back. :doobey:
When I was riding the Honda, generally most riders (excluding HD riders), waved back. :2thumbsup
Now I am riding the Ducati and it seems as though only other Italian bike riders or people I know wave back :eek5: weird eh!?

I'm with you on this and particulary as far as what others ride. I like my bikes and if they like theirs fine I'm not going to complain and I don't look down my nose at any bike and I wave at all riders - even surprise the ones on scooters at times but not you Deb, that wasn't me as we discussed.
As for a Rocket 111 or V-Rod as per the other thread, they'd be too bloody big to squeeze either one into my garage without leaving something else outside. Moral of the story - buy what suits you for whatever reason and stuff what anyone else thinks.

Im perfectally happy on that but I wouldnt mind another bike, I dont like Harleys but then again, Ive never ridden one so my opinion is worth Jack in a conversation about them.
Generally I keep my opinions to myself unless there is a dickhead who is talking Shite and is just generally wasting my precious air is when I get involved, talk shite to piss him off and then slag him to get him to shut up.

It's a defensive mechanism to insult other brands or models of motorcycles that we own. After all, we spend so much money on our purchases, that we must defend our fiscal integrity. If we have owned several brands and types of bikes then we become more tolerant of other makes and models.
I ran my first bike into the ground after only 3 years and could easily have called it a shit heap. But I still retain a warped affection for it and subsequently have remained a loyal Yamaha rider

I don't think it is any accident that apparent brand loyalty is highest amoungst riders that own bikes that require some commitment to ride or own.. I love my old Trumpy and Guzzi and parts are bloody cheap but jeeze... There is always something to do on an old vehicle...
Add in that you have to connect with a bike to get the best out of it. You utterly have to trust it 100% not to spit you into a ditch and so you tend to bond a little...
Some other person diss's your ride by daring not to wave and you can take it awful personal...

There's a lot of choice of motorcycles out there for your varied tastes. When you've gone through a chunk of bikes looking for the one for you at the start of your bike riding career you tend to think that brand x is the best because they offered what you thought was the best bike at the start.
Same thing happens with cars - how many Holden drivers out there would frown at a Mitsi Evo VII and vice-versa.
I'm a prime example - I like Yamahas. Actually that's not true - I LOVE Triumphs (Bonneville and Thruxton) but I can't ride them. The nicest most reliable thing that came close was my Yamaha. Now I get exposed going to the dealer etc to lots of Yamahas, and a smattering of other brands.... What comes to mind as soon as someone says "sporty bike"??? R1 of course. I have to look up what a ZXRQZZPY is ... you know?
Over exposed to my Yammy, but looking to move to a Triumph for style. Are these the best bikes in the world? For me, yeah - but my criteria are completely screwed! I can imagine Rossi winning MotoGP on a cafe racer style triumph - hehehehehehe!
:killingme
Oh - and another reason that we are becoming more one-eyed? Because we are all dicks.

Its the same with cars, boats, RC cars, almost anything!
People have different preferences, thats cool because if everyone rode a ducati it would be boring.
What is a shame though is when people slag off other bikes without any other reason than "i heard they were crap".
These people are fools, and there are plenty of them, they often like to make brash statements without so much as thinking.
Personally i like to quiz them why they think that and then watch them squirm as they try to come up with a good reason.
I rode a TL1000s that i had problems with, clutch, water pump seal, suspension, but i felt more affinity for it than my gsxr!
Logic would dictate the gsxr is the better bike, but like a fellow mentioned in a previous post it not alway the "best" bike that we love.

I dunno. :spudwhat:
I'm not a 'true blue' (or should that be, 'true red' ?) Honda fan, yet I've only ever owned Hondas (7). Except cars: Honda cars suck.
But it's not a conscious decision to buy only Hondas - it's just that every time I go to buy a new bike, I ride a few, and end up choosing the Honda. Some of that may be due to now being used to the Honda 'feel', so that Suzukis etc. just feel wrong somehow.
I bought my first Honda by chance: a lady who worked with my father was taken out by a brain-dead serial stop sign runner. Her bike was fixed up (much easier than fixing her 'broken in 6 places' leg), and I bought it.
My second Honda was bought because a friend had one, and I rode it, liked it, and one came up for sale.
Honda #3 was given to me by my brother-in-law in exchange for painting his roof and helping with his guttering. I would've liked a Ducati, but he had only the Honda.
Honda #4 was nearly a Ducati 750SS, but I was too slow. Then it was a choice between a VF500 and an RZ350, but the salesman talked me out of the Yamaha. Good decision: I had the VF for 7 years, and it was a very good bike.
The VFR was bought after riding a Triumph Daytona 750, Honda VT750, Suzuki B1200, VTR1000, and a couple of other bikes I can't remember. The VFR instantly felt right, a sign perhaps that I'd become too used to Hondas by then?
When I replaced the VFR, I rode a Suzuki RF900, an SV650, a VFR800, and also looked seriously at a GSX750. I decided to buy the VFR800, but my wife decided otherwise. I bought a VTR1000 instead.
I think if I'd spent more time looking at bikes and test-riding them, my wife may have persuaded me to buy a Ducati ST2 or 4, or a Triumph ST, or maybe a Yamaha. But I didn't, and the wife narrowly misssed out on convincing me to buy the VTEC VFR. So the VifFerrari it was.:niceone:
And next? Maybe if Honda replaces the VFR800 with a V5-something-or-other, I might buy another Honda. Otherwise, this may be my last bike. :spudwave:

More to the point the last owner was happy to part with it very cheaply. I did not think I was going to like it at first. Was considering selling it for a profit and moving on to something else. Turned out that the bike is perfect, slightly underpowered now I'm used to it, but I complained about the cb750 that I had eventually also. Hopefully through a lack of accidents one day I'll still own it once its a classic and vintage.
