Do I have to have an opinion either way?
Their trips are interesting and entertaining, and that's enough for me.

Nice lifestyle, being supported to ride motorcycles...

But Mr "In Touch with his Feminine Side" Boorman manages to annoy me with his constant whining. The bloke needs to HTFU

And the foul language on the DVD soundtracks was a big disincentive to showing it to my motorcycle keen son (age 8)

I enjoy their stuff, but on their second trip they seemed to have forgotten everything they learned on the first..

Haven't read or watched the tale of their journey, but compared to Glen Hegstad (http://www.strikingviking.net/), they seem like wieners. He basically did the same journey (plus a lot extra!) without all the backup they had.

I liked how they managed to bring biking to the masses, people who wouldn't normally be interested in bikes and associated issues actually took the time to view it!

All good!

Even though most of us were pissing ourselves laughing over some of the stuff and antics they got up to!
:2thumbsup for me!

It's a completely different thing that Glen Hegstad was doing, he was just riding.
Him and the bike. Very pure.

McGregor and Boorman were making a TV show so, they needed a camera crew, sound crew, a truck, masses of recording gear and the associated support equipment.

People criticise them for having heaps of backup, but you just can't make an international-quality TV programme without it.

I loved the first series. It was fantastic and entertaining.

Second one was very up in the air with lots of moaning about all sorts of things. There wasnt as much of a view from them how they thought about the cultures that were around them at the time like there was in the first.
And Ewens wife should have stayed at home.

I'll unsubscribe to this thread soon, but what Steam said first off.

Just finished reading the Race to Dakar. Anyone here who thinks they are a better rider that Boorman after training for this is fooling themselves.

All very easy to knock the two rich spoiled movie stars. Boorman is a 'bit' actor, he was painting & decorating after the first trip & used the Dakar & next trip to try & launch another career. Ewan is of course more famous & richer. Lets all knock him for that.

Neither 'heros' or 'zeros', just a couple of guys that like bikes and seem like decent chaps.

Who's knocking them?
We're just "taking the piss"
Yeah they ride. they might be good at it even, but if you act like plonker's, well.......................

I liked the concept of the Long Way round and it was a great story.
I'm sure it was tough and even a high country sheep farmer would have maybe had a wee cry in their Boveril.

But compared to Dick and Des (www.thelasthurrah.co.nz)they're fucking whinging lightweights!

Two very lucky guys who are able to go for some bloody long rides. Good on them both.

we watched both over & over. The first was good but the second only got going half way thru Africa. Long way down book was way better than dvd. The scenery didn't seem as spectacular in the movie as I imagined but then my imagination can get away with me sometimes... he he he

Me and my partner have watched them all, "...Long Way Round, ...Long Way Down and ...Race to Dakar". Thought they were a really good watch, very entertaining and left me drooling wishing I could do them as well but obviously don't have the same lifestyle as Charley and Ewen. Charley did/would get on my nerves a bit being somewhat of a drama queen and all but then it's all part of the show they portray in the series.

Havent seen Long Way down, but have got Long Way Round and Race to Dakar.
Think Charlie was better in Dakar, - that was f*ckin hard riding and easy to forgive his moaning a bit when riding over riverbed-type terrain with broken arms. Possibly because he was in company of better riders he lifted his game a bit.

Seen both. Whining namby-pambies. Mucho htfu pills needed. I thought long way round was good, apart from the whining soft cocks but fuck me -long way down, well isnt urine macgregor the spoiled brat! I think they dont focus enough on the bikes and the riding in long way down and too much on the "stars" and their personal little adventures.I hope long way down is a description of urines career from now on.

I raise you Sjaak Lucassen (http://www.sjaaklucassen.nl//).

Although his selection of bike was a bit esoteric for a round the world trip.

Like em or hate em??? Who knows. Heres a question.

Would you volunteer to go on thier next ride

1. If the trip was paid for by the TV people
2. If you had to pay for the trip yourself.
3. If paying for youself would you choose different travelling partners

Me I say
1. YES PLEASE!
2. Definite no.
3. Probably

As I prefer to ride alone, lets put it this way - I would NOT go climbing with either of them

I agree. Quite a few people I know who normally have no interest in bikes enjoyed the series - and are now a bit more biker friendly in their outlook.

Looking fwd to the Long Way Down when it finally arrives on NZ TV.

Would love to do something like that and :2thumbsup to them 'cos its still riding and they do it for a job (lucky bastards)

I think they are decent guys, and if Ewan's got the cash and profile to do something he wants to do - why not? Better than making another Star Wars film.

Having said that on a trip with him at some stage I would knock him over, having been brooding about the Phantom Menance. Never forget - never forgive!

Yep, this guy is amazing, having purpose built/modded a bike himself, and set off with no protection except his own instinct. Makes me laugh, looking at his and Nick Sanders' round the world R1's when people whine about "uncomfortable sportsbikes".

Charlie and Ewan? Nup, can't stand 'em. A couple of pampered wanna-be adventurers showing a carefully tailored view of their "hardship" as a convoy of support staff follow in their wake. Sooooo contrived. It's supposed to be a documentary and documentary's, in my opinion (which is worth squat, by the way) are supposed to "tell it like it is" and these don't. The hardest part of a trips like these would be the mental/emotional challenge (if it was just you and a mate battling away in the middle of nowhere) and having that support crew on hand removes most of that challenge.

I lost all respect for Ewan Macgregor when he was out and about on a custom bike that he said he'd built himself.....then I saw photo's of the same bike being built by a professional....twat.

Got the book from the library.
Read 3/4 of it, then took it back and felt pissed off that I wasted a few hours of my time reading that pap.

The Long Way Round was the influences that finally made me the desision to buy a bike and get out on it.

The Race to Dakar (just charlie) was a good explination of what goes on behind the scenes of the Dakar Rally. Charlie was obviously far out of his element, but how many of us wouldnt be when compared to the worlds top riders.

And the Long Way Down.... Well it was definitely to worst of the lot, to much reality television drama and not enough boys on bike enjoying the culture and the adventure. And Ewans wife should have said at home and let boys be boys, from the amount of time she fell she clearly didnt have the skills to make it an enjoyable trip.
