Ok I have a thumper (single cylinder) I know what they're like but what characteristics are there, both real & percieved, between inline triples,fours,& v twin, vfours etc.

vtwin is quite similar to the single, in exhaust note (slight burble added), torque spread, and vibration.

inline four is much smoother, usually with a more peaky torque-spread / power band.

Ride each, and you will know very quickly which one you prefer.

what do you mean by peaky torqe spread? Why go to a vtwin if similar to single - engine size limited by single?

my boys 250 is a single and the cagiva is a v twin the v twin seems to have more power

V4, smooth power delivery of the inline fours with all the oodles of low down torque of a vtwin.

I'm a big thumper fan, especially of big banging ones like the GB400. Compared to those, V-twins/parallel twins are sort of toned down/civilised a lot. Less vibration, less grumpy and stubborn at low RPM. Respond much more to revs, you get a sort of rush. You have to keep them on the boil a bit comparably.

In short, V-twins are sort of like a gay single. Homogenised. Bland. Still twice as good as a four, though :D

The vtwins have a sort-of double off-beat sound to them - quite addictive. Ride one soon and you will see. Even just listen to one idling.
