New Zealand Police Alert 2:30pm 21 Mar 2008 Auckland City
Location of incident: Northern Region
Incident type: Heavy Traffic Advisory
The Police Northern Communication Centre reports that main routes throughout the region, from Turangi, north are busy.
State Highways 2 & 26 around Paeroa are reported to be the busiest seen in years with traffic reduced to a crawl in several places.
All Auckland motorways are reported to be busy and SH1, north through Orewa and Waiwera is congested to the extent that some motorists are giving up and turning around. The SH16 alternative is steady and the recommended route.
Considering the number of vehicles on the road, most motorists appear to be driving to the conditions. Hopefully this will continue as any crash will have a major impact on other travellers.
Those travelling are advised to allow for delays and asked to be patient.

Yeah, I just went for a wee ride and took in the portion of SH16 between Peak Road and Woodcocks Road.
There's a fair amount of northbound traffic, but it's all flowing at 70kph or better and 16 will certainly be the fastest way of getting to Wellsford.
But, honestly. You'd have to be a moron to plan a long car trip to a popular holiday spot today. Leaving late-ish last night for a drive in the dark would have been the way to go.
Anyway, for that matter, fuck driving around the North Island in a car this weekend. Poor bloody cagers eh?

That gives me the shits! Because all it says to me is how on a national basis we can't even go out for a picnic on a holiday weekend. How fucked up is our roading network.
Dirve on eggshells all because as Mr brooker says as soon as some makes a mistake you are all in the shit!!!

Yeah, true.
If you're anything like me, you're twiddling your fingers and counting the years until The Mitch is big enough to hop on the back and you can stop ferrying him around in traffic on four wheels.
Of course, I've got two to haul, so I'm not quite sure how I'll handle it.
Sidecar maybe?
Be a hassle filtering with a sidecar, though.

Yeah traffic still crawling into Warkworth (we can see SH1 from home) has been like it all day, no let up at all.

Having moved from 2 cars to 1 bike + 1 car a while back I'm finally considering buying an old dunger to use to get the kids to their various events. Both kids have been on the bike often and are fine with it (less so in winter), but it's a problem if I have to get one to soccer practice or something and leave the other at home on his own, even for a short while. Another car would make this problem disappear.
Seems to be about the only option if you have multiple kids and two working parents, unfortunately.

Had a great traffic free ride, Intended going north but saw the traffic build up in Warkworth and headed south instead., down to Silverdale, across to Kaukopa and up H16. Two trucks and a campervan each with the usual tail of half a dozen cars, most pulled over and let me through. Cruised at 120 with a couple of blasts up to 160, (for medicinal purposes only) A couple of smokes at the lookout and a chat to an Aprilia rider. On to Wellsford where the traffic was still backed up down to the Dome, then down to Warkworth and back home, 160kms in a leisurely 21/4 hours. Can't figure out why cage drivers like to sit in jams when there's a road like H16 practically deserted, but I'm happy if they are.

I came back from the Far Norf today (in a cage  - blame SWMBO)
No traffic at all, hardly a car. Pahia to Waimate North Mission (beautiful Good Friday service ) to Broadwood to Panguru (she wanted to see where Dame Wozzit came from) to Rawene (ferry) , through the forest , Dargaville, Wellsford and back down SH16
Traffic banked up at Brynderwyn and Wellsford but they let me through
All good, except for having to make a 10 km diversion over gravel roads to shake off a pestilential traffic cop who insisted on playing cat and mouse from Dargaville to Ruawai . Just because he was peeved off because he took longer to hit the lock button than I did to hit the brakes. All good but, I found some interesting back roads.

Maybe stick em in a trailer behind the bike and see if the cops can catch you... mind you, it would have to be a fairly narrow trailer to filter in traffic with in Auckland! I can barely squeeze the cruiser through the gaps some days.

Yep, just drove to South Taranaki and back. Was an interesting one. After getting a couple of speeding tickets last year, my demerits were not looking too healthy, so having been a REALLY good boy for the past year, I was back on track with 60 demerit points up my sleeve. Halfway between Ngaruwahia and Otorohonga, it happened.
Had spent the whole drive happily with the speed control set to 105kph, it was 6:00am and heavily foggy, thus any traffic I got stuck behind was nigh on impossible to pass safely. Had one lovely, straight section of road with bugger all fog and only a dot of car headlight far on the horizon, so I pulled out to overtake the car and boat in my way, which naturally required a bit of haste. Never would have thought oncoming car was Highway Police. 139kph in a 100kph. GUTTED. SHould have had the radar detector in the car. So I am back to not being able to get another single ticket, or the lovely little lady from council will be around to pick up me licence.
Managed the whole way back to not crack over 110kph, and was really impressed when I checked me gadgetry that overall speed for the journey was 91kph. Good old cruise control. Set to 110kph and steer away.
Now for another year of making sure I behave!
