Dunno spuddy.. I talked to one of my guys who went on a wednesday night ride recently and he said they were hitting up to 160k in some spots.
Not quite slow in my books.
And 20-40 bikes ain't quite riding buddy buddy.
I'd suggest going through that thread though and pick out someone you like the sound of and invite them out one day via a PM message. That's how my own MC started up.

I can see where your coming from Llama Sola, and I will be one of the first to say that in some places I do like to open up that throttle to mind bending speeds.
Everyone on the ride though, rides at their own pace. There are always those people that get to the destination quickly and those that get there slowly, and those that are in the middle.
Regardless of how fast or slow you go on the ride more often than not there will be someone around you that you can ride with.

Defeats the purpose of what the wednesday rides started off as.
I wouldn't recommend going on the Wednesday rides if you haven't much time riding with people and in various road conditions under your belt.
My feeling of getting one good riding buddy and building from there still stands.
After all, the original post was about wanting to make a riding bud, not where are all the group rides at.
Edit -
Feel free to contact me as I don't mind going out once or twice, and if not me I can set you up with one of my guys who might be free at various times of the week. They are all pretty cruisey guys with their riding and behave when with others.

Wednesday night rides are a good starting point, you will get to know a few folks and make contacts that are interested in doing weekend rides.
There is a group of folks on the Wed night ride who enjoy using their bikes potential, there are guys who have been along rarely and can offer a lot to those learning to ride but seem to have gotten ideas into their heads the rides not worth it because of incidents the have seen or been part of.
I can comment on this because when I am there I play tail end charlie along with a couple of others, those of use that sit towards the back are more than willing to help out where we can, there is no compulsion to keep up with the front riders, if for example the ride is heading to Dauvauchelle some folks in the slower group either turn at Little River and head back or head to Godley House.
Come along and judge for yourself, it free except for some petrol and any food you want to buy.

I'm up for some mid week rides if you're keen.
As fas as the mid-week ride goes, people ride at their own pace. Some do mind warping speeds, some do cruisey speeds. Unlike LLAMA I've actually been on some of these rides, not just heard about them from a mate.

Firstly, welcome to the zoo that is KB. Don't put your fingers through the bars - some of the specimens bite!
I wouldn't recommend going on the Wednesday rides...
And, clearly, since you've been to so many of them, you can clearly pass judgement on the people who do attend, and the event itself. Actually, it doesn't work like that. Don't go knocking something you really don't know much about - you've never been. Refer to JMemonic's post.

The Wednesday Night rides are an excellent starting point. We have several pretty new riders coming along on a pretty regular basis. They ride near the back and are never in any hurry, just ride at their own pace. I'm picking with an RGV250 you'd be somewhat quicker than that pace, but if you start out near the back, you'll find that you never see anything approaching "worrying", let alone any mind bending speeds.

Quite so. There's no pressure to ride with the guys up the front who like to get a hustle on, we all pretty much ride at our own pace. People have referred to 'incidents' - that'll happen on pretty much any group ride. So far on these rides we've never had a multi vehicle accident - it's only ever been one person making a stuff up. Noone has taken anyone else out, nor been taken out by a car... though if you listen to the nay-sayers every rider on every ride is trying to kill themselves and everyone else. :argh:
Come along to the BK Moorhouse carpark between 6pm and 6.30pm (we leave at 6.30pm) on a Wednesday night - most of the time there's at least 20 bikes as long as it isn't raining - and see for yourself. Who knows, you might even make a friend. :niceone:
Here's the thread (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=63581), though don't bother reading the whole thing, it's 738 posts long and most of it utter waffle!

Hi Gunnz,
Welcome to KB. I recommend coming along. There are some fantastic guy & girls who come along and take care of us slowys at the back, and I know I have improved heaps under there guidence. Would love to see you along to make your own decision.
LS- Come along and see what a proper ride (I think you did 1 over New Years where a few went out? doesnt really count) is like before you pass judgement, second hand comments are not useful

Except for the fact... I have been. Eh spuddy!? *wink* (Edit - remember the wee doggy that liked to run past us in the middle of the road?). So yeap... telling me to show up or making cuff marks about me not showing up - just invalid. Been there, done that. Might show up, might not. Who cares?
I reckon it was the setting sun that made people settle down in pace on that ride, and the fact a quarter of us pulled away to go pick up karla! :)
And it ain't just one of my guys who's shown up and commented on the pace to me - negative or positive connotations; the speed of the ride was clocked and I was told over a pint(s) what has been going down across town.
As for people not showing up to things.. sheesh.. I don't think I seen half of you lot at the last... oooo maybe 4 rallies? No biggy. :)
Point being, fast or slow, staggered or lined, dressed as girls or boys, - be honest with what you are doing. You got riders coming out and some are hot heads, some are bogans, some are pretty sweet. The ride I went on, someone(s) decided to pull over and nearly had the whole column fly into the back of them down a semi-busy road. Other people have said "hey, that ride I went on last week I hit 160km eh! Wasn't bad - hit that on a straight eh". Others have said to me about ones I haven't been on "Hey, was a great ride!" but it's usually been something of the formers.
IF there wasn't people happy with the rides then no one would show up. Good on yas. I know ya put effort into it Ry Ry, and I aint's bagging ya just like yous given props to my crew when we started up. Like your efforts, we get people coming back as they happy with what goes down. Just tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. 0 bins, 0 crashes, 0 drops, 2 close calls not govern by bad calls (someone else's fault), 1 bad call by the lead that could have resulted in an accident (lucky buggger he was to), 1 million times got lost and/or took the wrong turn. Our record still stands. (And most of the time getting lost or taking a wrong turn is my fault)
Ride safe. Watch of for dogs on the road. Gtg, I have a passed out women sleeping in my guest room. Have to do the gentlemanly thing and make sure she isn't spewing all over my carpets. Beer o' clock has now finished!

All that aside LLS, yes IMHO the ride does/did have some issues this being the reason I havent found the time either... but its only a small minirity, the rest are doing great, and it would be ideal for the new fella to go.

Guys. Shut up. Seriously. Arguing is tiresome.
gunnz_p if you want, come along to the Wednesday night ride. There are experienced people there that will be more than happy to help you with anything.
If you dont like the ride you dont have to come back. Just PM one of the members here that does go that you meet on the ride. Im sure that they will be more than happy to ride with you.
As it stands I will be more than happy to "tour the south island" one Sunday at a time with you. Hell I figure you cant be that bad a person if you ride a bike.

I could probably ride with you around the leader road and inland road to Kaikora as its my back door. But then lots of riders do those roads they are so good!
Go and enjoy the Wed night , its fun, no pressure to do anything than ride to your own pace,
Fast fellas?? yeap they there, then gone, but who cares if you are having a good time and feel safe.
A good basic crew in that group/
The usual few with Ego Totestorne (sp?) problems , but plenty of self controled riders who will help.
Been a couple of times with the Wed night cruze, IMHO good to learn from,

Here's some advice for you depressing winging bastards out there: go to your doctor and ask for a big dose of PROZAC:finger:
If you believe (and it would be down to individuals opinions) that the WNR's are that bad or dangerous then don't go - it's that simple! Bitching on threads like these won't help you or anyone else.:nono:
Get a life and go do something that makes you happy...

Hell you would tour the Island one Sunday at a time :), Gunnz you could now a hell of a lot worse than this bloke as a riding buddy, except for one thing and this is important do not be surprised if halfway through a day you find you are refuelling in Nelson, scoffing down McD's and on the road again before the wrapper has hit the bottom of the bin.:dodge:
Gunnz no doubt we will meet you Wed night, unfortunately I cant help with the one Sunday at a time due to work but when available I am up for a ride, there's this one road I want to do.... but I digress.
