:woohoo: AWESOME, did it twice over easter, in perfect weather, with my little honey sitting on the back of the R6, (front in the air most of the time), Iam moving down that way soon, so trying to get used to it. Great road but still needs to be treated with respect i'd say. Great also to catch up with the sports bike people at the top and have a chat.:niceone:[ MY R6]

That would be the Pylon Track, aptly named for it's proximity to the Pylons... A lot of Featherston's unemployed use it as a main arterial route in & out of town.

I went over there on Saturday. Riding Mikkel's ZXr750rr down to Welly for him. Was looking forward to a bit of fun, but what I got instead was drizzle and diesel. Lovely.:(
So I went home over the Paekak...much more betterer.

all the dodgy bits re the centreline are going down the other side. there's a few corners on that side that you swear you can see through only for a vehicle coming the other way to pop out of "nowhere". Fortunately its not a lesson I've had to learn the hard way.

There's a lot of dodgy bits - I stay left on the blind right handers on the way up for good reason - trucks/buses tend to cross into your lane at some points.

Re "Softcock" vid, never feels like 5 mins to the summit does it, always feels like, "What, we're there already?!", and doesn't everyone indicate when over taking?, or is that just a nanna thing to do? And I wanna learn how to ride down the Featherston side that fast, I really do crawl down that side.... so sad!!!

[QUOTE= the more I do it the better I get at it and the more I'm starting to love it!![/QUOTE]

Thats the key I think, I used to be the same way with a mental block about the feathers side, now I think i rush the Welly side and it all gets a bit stop/starty. The Feathers side is all about being smooth, avoiding the brakes where possible and using alot of the inside of your lane. Thats my 10 cents on the matter any hoo.

For sure eh! I had a real problem with the tightish right hander on the last passing lane before the summit on the Welly side, hated that corner something bad, but then I talked myself into just doing it, looking ALL the way round it and then flicking back the other way for the right hander afterwards and started to be able to do it quite happily. Now it's my favourite corner on the whole road, just hang it out and go for it, need some more ground clearance on the Hornet though!!!

Excellent pic, I would like to see a pic of the other side though. I have ridden it often on a push bike (multisport training). What was hard when going down the Featherston side was braking into the corners on little racing push bike tyres (you had sore hands from braking by the time you got to the bottom)

I like the Taka's. But everytime I go over it, I remember the piece of advice given to me by Mrs Kendog, that it is a piece of road that deserves respect no matter how many times you have ridden it, and no matter what the weather is like.....

Now if someone would be kind enough to pass on some tips on how to go downhill as smoothly would be appreciated........

I am going to have to admit to the fact I have loved the Takas, but not so much as when I was blasting up there on my GN250, yep! Esp going around the tight Muldoon Corner awesome fun. Now I just have to get up some confidence and practice going up on my bandit... hmm maybe tonight!

I don't get it. This must be one of the worse roads around.

The surface is shit,
There is zero visibility in the corners,
There is either white lines, rocks or diesel on most of the corners,
There is heaps of traffic going at seemingly random speeds and in random positions on the road.
And it takes 20 minutes of boring motorway riding to get there.

What am I missing?

Trudes
26th March 2008, 11:03
That all adds to the fun of it, if it wasn't for all those things (except for the boring motorway ride there, even that you can make interesting if you try!!) then there'd be no challenge and it would be like the motorway! However taking all the annoying cars/trucks/campervans etc off there would make it more fun, but then they are just passing practice and are usually going so slow that they're almost like large lumps of steel that you just dodge. (Can you tell I've just got back from a spin up there in the beautiful morning sun??)

Last time going to Welly, it was so much fun, once I got to the bottom,I turned around and did it again (no rush to get to Welly, anyway), and then, yet again!

Scraping the pegs on the 1000 on several spots on the 2nd run, up and down
- bliss!

Now, if you could just pick up the hill and move it to Perth......show some of the locals what a real road is like.........

It's one of the best bits of road in the country IMHO. Each to their own.

If the motorway bores you, try taking a detour through Whiteman's Valley & Mangaroa. Personally I almost always take the shortest direct route straight up to Bikers Nirvana.

The Paraparas are great for a blast - although they were shit for a while during the heavy rains/floods back in 03/04 ?

Paekakariki Hill Road use to be favourite, but I rarely go over there now, and when I do it's at a very sensible pace. Too many dickheads crossing the centre line.

Correct, the start line is more or less at that intersection and the track uses the road heading ESE for 6kms.
