View Full Version : Riding 7 out of 10...

i have slowed down and ride a max of 6 or 7 out of ten. one of my mates is dissapointed because he really liked trying to catch me, but for some reason i cant justify the unneccessary risks of dedicating myself fully and giving peolpe races on the road. am i going soft?

ive looked at my tyres and i havent been leaning it very far. i seem to find pleasure in hanging off and making relatively quick progress instead of going nuts. why the hell would this happen? im becoming a pussy:spanking:

Welcome to motorcycling. I think you may make a biker yet. (Yes, I do remember you've been round for a while. But that was as a bikiboi.) Now, start enjoying riding for its own sake

Well done.

Yep, agree with that. I reckon this is what Katman is trying to get riders to realise

It sounds like you have discovered the joy of motorcycling. Speed is not the be-all and end-all. There is a whole sweet package of skills that make riding a pleasure. Enjoy every moment.

Thanks dickhead. I didnt say it was to the point of some of the nutters on here. And theres only been one main overtaking maneuvore that was close to turning really badly, all the rest have been small risky things I have done.

(red for you, delete your post and ill delete mine when im on here next so ducatilovers thread isnt ruined)

I'm about to start getting back into things on a GSXR1000K3... i wont have any choice but to ride at 7/10ths or less, good thing i enjoyed it last time i was out riding like that.

The trackday is gonna be a different story though!

i geuss i am geting smartIf you read "THE PACE" take particular note of:

Don't hang off in the corners or tuck in on the straights Sitting sedately on the bike looks safer and reduces unwanted attention. It also provides a built-in safety margin.

i hate staying on top of he bike. i feel more comfortable leaning off even when riding normally. although when riding my mates mc22 i stay on top unless going spiritedly:rolleyes:

Maybe you could make it part of your new, softer, less abrasive approach to wising up the masses? People might respond to you more warmly. :msn-wink:

FWIW I agree with your apparent agenda, as I see it but your method needs a lot of refining mate.

Anyway - this is ducatilovers thread (& I'm buying a Ducati soon) so back on topic :)

I've been trying to force myself in becoming more interested in more sedate bikes. No luck this far. Best I've done so far is liking the XR650, less likely to break the speed limit but more likely to break all the other road rules

I do tend to ride softer, relative to the bike. Quicker than I've ever been, but not pushing my limits and scaring myself.

Yep, agree with that. I reckon this is what Katman is trying to get riders to realise

his latest message was ride how you like as long as you take responsibility.....

but on topic, good shit. Enjoy the ride, become one with the bike, let it flow. the oh-shit adrenaline moments are bad. i had 1 today and severely smacked my own arse afterwards :spanking: perversley it made me want to do it again but no, bad!

Ive found Im not interested anymore in setting a fast pace or following a fast biker on roads I dont know, thru corners I cant see around.Unless I feel like it of course. I can take the jibes for being not as much fun as before but thats cause the tracks better.Just wish my mates'd get their shit together then we'd really see.....
Maybe its an age thing, or experiece etc but its got to be good.

Good on you. We all need to challenge ourselves, so we don't get bored. the trick is choosing the challenge. I'm guessing that you've realised that you don't get any payoff for these risks...(or you have kids) Find a new challenge. Mine is to become exceptional at <5kmh handling and to only use my brakes for stopping. When I was 18 (a verrry long time ago) my challenge was new speed records. What you need to find is a new skill to outperform your mate with.

If how I ride on the track is 10/10 then I mostly ride 7-8/10 on the road. Of course my 8/10 is slower than many and faster than many.

I enjoy riding at 5/10 level too but only if it's crusing with other people and/or in a good pace rythm.

Personally I've fucked my body enough skiing and mountainbiking to start smashing myself up coming off the bike for no good reason.

Being able to push the limits in a more controlled environment is where it's at for me. If I'm going to crash I'd rather it be on the track any day.

+1, though I'm working on not cutting the full visibility rights. Have been tentatively doing this since babysitting brother in law on his first ride aboard his blackbird, but gave it a serious crack today after reading that article. I was about 98% successful, 25 year old habits don't die overnight it seems.

Listen to me you speed craving dudes out there. Your'e given one body in this life, and you are either unlucky enough to be given a spoonful of bad luck on the health front which is deeply hard enough to swallow (believe me!!!), or you look after the body that you have and the spankingly fun things you can do with it without applying speed.

Not wishing to sound hippy here, but if your heart beats that fast, and your eyes are wide open and sweat is pouring down your face and you have the nasty cold feeling that you have just cheated death by a manoeuvre, then believe my friends that is the highest lesson that your body is screaming at you to listen to and learn from, so fucking well listen to it.

The craziest way to get that feeling is to get to grips with a fantastic person and get that heady high when you are shagging your brains out, you can go as fast as you want to get there, and you have to hang onto every breath before you pass out, give it so much as if there was no tommorow, then float on that heady high of unbelivable good times are a coming feeling.

That to me beats the shit out of hanging onto a two wheeled machine that really wants to be your friend and has no intention of killing you.

Yeah sure the speedo cranks it up towards 300kph, in the case of the new MV, then its 312kph. but who the fuck really enjoys that.

Good on yer, if you want to cheat death a few times, but believe me, we're all gonna get there one day, but by speeding towards it, heck your welcome to it.

Me I'm just happy chugging along, peering through my helmet at the wonders of the countryside unfolding in front of me, getting to where I am going, hugging the friends I have when I get there, having shit loads of fun, then riding home, and hugging my bike, when its tucked up safely in the garage, before I put its cover on.

But hey that's me, don't know whats around the corner, but happy to prolong it for as long as possible, and get out there and live the life I love.

Fuck that does sound hippy.

But dude, if your minds telling you to slow down its for good reason.

Live long, shag a lot, and smile like the smile is going to break your face in half:done::Punk:

So what is an overtaking maneuvore almost ending baddly? For me it is a maneuvore ending with less than about 80 meters, what is the norm for a 'bad ending'?

People will race on the roads until they wise up. And once sense overcomes the thrill or a little illicit speed, you have to ask who's it for? Godo on Ducatilover for resisiting his friends urges to carry on fast. Ride for pleasure. Its really not a race.

Get those kicks on the track.

Great find. It sums up the way I have been riding, and also the place etc. of trail braking (many things covered in many ways over many threads here) and puts them all into a fun safe but fast-riding context.

Now you can enjoy 30 years of motorcycling at 7/10 instead of 3 years at 9/10.

Trust me, you have come out way ahead.
