Warwick alerted this to me but I'm still confused? I thought the Auckland club were holding the official MNZ one again along with F4 (as every year). Has this changed then?

This is the NZ 50cc Grand Prix... as in 50cc GP bikes with 8 gears and shit, but yeah any 50cc can compeat and your 50 has a chance as these factory GP bikes are kinda farking old... but there is ment to be a fair few about, I have been told of 4 in ChCh

Wow, that would be good to see if people had these old bikes to race. I'd get Annihilated by a proper Derbi or Kreidler but would be fun to see & get the numbers up. Would it be run as a separate race to the BOB? I'm trying to wrangle an F4 entry atm.

S e p a r a t e races? Cool. & with a gap between them I could run both F4 & GP! or all 3 if I was silly, but means I'd have to leave the set up F5 as is.
Don't know if el presidente is clued into what fuels are legal for GP?

Anything
I'd be getting some oxygenated methanol or something like that :doctor:

Maybe a distilled Feijoa 42 Below mix?
Yeah I wouldn't want to irreversibly raise the compression, but I could change the timing/jetting to suit a new fuel

You will clean up Dave, your cometition will be RG50's and a couple of 30 year old shitters dusted off for this meet. They will franticly be trying to find sticky 18" pushbike tyres.:devil2:

A decent Kreidler will clean my bike up no problem at all.
Tyres would be a major concern for them, but those bikes used to lap big tracks & are stiff enough to cope with the corners. I will win on braking & max cornering traction, but only the hairpin & up & over the connection road would be my advantage.

ummm... I dont know what ya would be worried about Dave, I googled Kreidler and found this pic, dont no what the fuss is about...
I also found a 50cc Kreidler that did 210kph :shit: and another that spits out 18hp at 18,000rpm :gob:

yeah, that's like 360bhp per litre so kinda shuts people up about these powerful motoGP bikes.
The 1982 was at 19hp at 15600rpm. Pretty old except my RG50 was released about the same time (they took several years to make it over to NZ).
Stupidly peaky but they had the gears to make up for it. I'd love to ride one.
Wow, how much does it weigh? 20kg?

Last night we saw the 50ccGP trophy, last won in 1980 by Bob Toomey
What a fantastic bit of history, and to think it's all go again on the 7th.
Bob Toomey was quite famous, as a rider and then later in top world GP teams. Can anyone fill in a bit of detail here? It would be interesting
Thanks, and hope to see plenty of bikes there (I'm prepping 5!)

Be good to see a decent field. I wonder how many genuine GP bikes will turn up?

I wonder if he really was the last person to win it though?
About 1982 they ran a street race in Sydenham and the NZGP was contested at that meeting and they did run a 50cc class, I'll try and find the program again

Unfortunately due to problems with my other bike I will no longer have time to sort out the 50cc bike I had to ride :angry2:

Yeah, I love the wee 50's. When I started racing, it was 22 years ago, in Dunedin and 50's were all the rage then. When my oldest boy, Dom began riding it was a hotted up Yamaha RD50. When I gave him a YB100 he said the torque and power spoiled him so he gave it back! He was determined to beat the "senior" buckets on the 50 and usually did. He developed a "tucked in, small as I can be" riding style which he still has today, even with 200hp under him!
Roll on the 50's. I can't wait

How did the 50's go? Does anyone have any photos, or is it coming on the telly?
F5 Dave
16th June 2008, 09:32
The Telly? Sadly no.
Though it may be mentioned in KR if Dave gets his feature published. There were more photos taken of the 50GP than the BOB as it was dry as opposed to pouring.
To be honest we didn't get a huge amount of old GP eligible bikes (ie: not just F5 buckets), but there was a good turn out. Hopefully next year other bikes will be pulled out of sheds etc.
Here's my report on the race.
