View Full Version : North Island: North Island Four Corners - 250cc pairs.

HTFU
30th March 2008, 22:10
Attention all small capacity motorcycle riders.

With the new laws coming in for the licensing system, the mighty 250cc bike community will be no longer (or in its present form). In honour of the mighty beast that is the 250cc and in the interests of "Hardening the Fuck Up KB" I propose an event is in order.

Date -Thinking Weekend of the 2,3,4th May or 16,17,18th May (enough time to save some petrol money, get a service done and weather is hopefully still good)

Format is as follows -

All bikes must be 250cc or smaller.

Riders will need to be paired up with another Kiwibiker, and they will do the loop together. Idea of riding with a partner is that you have someone looking out for you and it will be easier to ride along with someone of similar skill/pace level and hopefully nothing to prove. Groups tend to have issues that on a journey this long could be a problem. Also when you turn up at the checkpoint it will be easier on the hosts if there is only two of you. By all means organise some friends into pairs and see if they and their bikes are up to the challenge. If there are 3 or you and you can't find another rider then that should be sweet.

Course is a North Island loop that has Four Check points on it. These will be based in the Far North, Bay of plenty, Wellington and Waikato. Kataia to Wellington is 1000km so loop will be something closer to 2500 km depending on the course. Would be awesome to go out to Newplymouth and Napier but a more direct course up and down the middle would probably be more realistic - but doing both sides of the central plateau (Oto-Taumarunui-Raetihi-Wanganui one way and Taihape Turangi-Tokoroa the other. Perhaps even Masterton - Feilding to change the run in/out of Wellington and a similar thing up the far north. Would be up to the riders which way they go for most of the course as long as they check in at the KB host along the way.

Riders will Post on Kiwibiker that they have left their starting point and then must Log in and post at the Four check points along the way. One of the Check points could also be a starting point for those living inland.

Start time will be Friday afternoon aiming to be finished and back to your starting point by Sunday Afternoon. So yes a bit of night riding will be required (would want to time it so that the new roads and areas are done in the day for interest sake and a bit of safety).

Will want to do ride before weather packs in so sometime in May would be good.

No cost to enter (just a shit load for gas - est $200-250) - Just post on here your possible interest in taking part, list your riding partner (other biker - don't recommend a pillion), your suggested starting point and preferred weekend in May.

Will need a safe house/caravan in the four corners of the Island for riders to log in their progress and possibly take a nap or have a coffee. PM me if you live in one of the Four Corners (thinking stops somewhere near Kaitaia, Otorohanga, Wellington, Tokoroa). If you would be keen to have bikes coming in over the weekend. My place in Otorohanga would be one (will have to lock your bikes up though :msn-wink:).

I'm keen to attend. Not sure what dates in may i'm available - I need to look at exam shedule.

So which towns are the checkpoints going to be in ?

What distance are we looking at ?

Can we do it with more than two people , say 3 or 4 ?

This sounds like a lot of fun, however I've never ridden with/met any KBers before, not sure if anyone would wanna pair up with me...?

Sweet.

I have edited my original post.

Loop will be somewhere from 2000km to 2500km.

Checkpoints will be near Kaitaia, Otorohanga, Wellington, Taupo/Tokoroa and anywhere else people would like to add their house as a resting place that is on the route.

I think 2 is ideal but lets make it 3 bikes per group max.

2000ks can be done. gotta be mostly riding dou. so its apoint to point instead of a laid back tour.

I'm up for that.

Are there any long weekends in may ?

Or you could have a go at the 22nd Grand Challenge on October 18/19 as all the infrastructure including safety support is already in place (or both!). Starts and finishes at Turangi. 1600 km in 24 hours. Entry forms and ride reports on: http://www.rustynuts.org.nz/.

More than likely I will be doing that one this year as well.

But have always been one to do things on the old shoe string, and have wanted to do this ride for a while now and was just keen to see if other were up to it as well.

Not a lot to organise (just somewhere people can log in to KB for the updates and somewhere for a snooze if needed) and with good old fashioned personally responsibility added to the mix, safety is covered.

Can you put up a map of the route/circuit.

Can you put up a map of the route/circuit.

Hey Mike.

Will try and find that map site to post one up. No set course except that basically you will have four checkpoints to call into and log into KB. One in the Far North (Kaitaia etc), one down the Western Waikato (Otorohanga etc), one in Wellington and one in the Eastern Waikato/Bay Plenty (Taupo etc). Where exactly will depend on who from KB offers us their homes as the checkpoints for the ride. New Plymouth and Napier could be added as well just not sure if there would be enough time to go out to the coasts in the middle of the island.

Course will be run clockwise i.e Taupo to Wellington to Otorohanga to Kaitaia back to Taupo. When you leave home you will log in and estimate your starting time to where you will enter the course and the same for when you get home and log in to say you have finished. So for you, your first Checkpoint will be the one near Tokoroa/Taupo and you could even start and finish there if you wanted to then your next one will be Wellington then Oto then Kaitaia finishing back in Tokoroa. Best thing though would be to start and finish somewhere along the road you would ride between Kataia and Tokoroa so you cut down on extra Ks (we will be doing enough). Someone in New Plymouth for example would have to enter the course somewhere near Taumarunui and head North.

If I end up doing this by myself (very possible if I can't find enough KB people to host the 3 other checkpoints) I will just call into friends in Far North and Central Plateau for a break.

hmmm , sounds interesting - depending on how much night riding will be required i may be in for this...."ponders it all".

Roughly 2000 km to ride and 2 full days to do it and 10.5 hrs of sunlight a day in May.

Early start Saturday morning i.e 5-6am each day would see it through by Sunday night and that's with a half decent sleep Saturday night, (this may be better than a Friday afternoon start now I think of it). Although someone like Mr Blackbird may shed some light on actual average speeds over a long ride.

May be better for riders to plan a stop somewhere Saturday night rather than the checkpoint idea (I am all for what is easiest). Advertise on here your intended plan and a KB may sponsor you a bed.

Thinking 3rd and 4th of May at this stage. With an official start time of 5.30 am Saturday Morning.

I'm definately keen for this one,

Alot of you 250 boys know me so if you wanna pair up with me, i'll being pulling a ballot and I expect you to pay for some of my gas. Haha, nah I kid.. Nah du'h.

I'd be mad keen to do a time trial round the North Island in pairs or smaller groups, see if I can find a real dedicated guy and just pack a tent and do as little stops as possible..

So Toto, Glice feel free to drop me a pm or a text and we can sort out setting this up aye. Hope if draws it bit more attention too.

Keen to do this mission at anytime so put up your intentions on here and lets make it happen. I was thinking of Friday night up to Kawakawa (have a place to stay) Sat morning to the cape and head back down to stop in Ohakune (have a place to stay. Sun to Wellington and back up North.

Other option is a real mission. Start Sat early and just keep going with small rests along the way. Or even more mission like and head out to NP and Gissy as well.

Well after looking at the map it's all States Highways.. and contrary to popular belief major State Highways are BORING.

So yes, as Toto said could do with some more twisties. And I also agree with point A.. i've still got to do the Cape ride 2 or 3 more times over the next two or three months and while it is fun, it buggers up your bike before too long! Then again that Wairou Forest road is mighty tempting..

I dunno, to be discussed further I guess. But i'm still keen, i've never been to Wellington and have considered many a time to just go down one weekend..

I think HTFU's map is just to show the checkpoints, I was under the impression that participants can take any route they want as long as they post here before they depart and again when they arrive at each checkpoint.
