I have a idea.....
Has anyone, or does anybody know of anyone, who has successfly put a 12a or a 13b mazda rotary into a sportsbike??
I'm not talking about a Norton 588cc or anything like that (which I must say, at this time, is my dream bike) I'm thinking a 1200cc or 1300cc, maybe even bridgeport or turbo or both.
We all know of V8s ending up in choppers, which is cool if you're into things like that, but we're here on this site looking up sport/road bikes, and I think most of us are into performance. Aren't we??
Yes I know sport bikes go well now as they are, I have one, and I have seen on youtube turbo bikes with 500hp, but I like to be different. I like the sound!!!. Can you imagine pulling up to the lights on your sportsbike.. and the people next to you hearing your bike going... brap brap brap

So what do you think??
Is it possible??
How do you think someone should go about it??
What unforseen things do you think they would need to think about. (gearbox etc)
I dont just want all your ideas so I can build one, let's share our ideas so maybe we could get a few going.

Would it fit without damaging handling? Would be a sight to see/hear at the traffic lights. I know it'd make my head turn

In1972 Van Veen put a RX2 engine in a Guzzi V7 frame , it was the prototype for the Van Veen OCR1000 rotary,

big, heavy, hot running....
You CAN do anything with enough time and/or money but wouldn't the Norton Commander that was/maybeis on trademe for about 16k be a better starting point...?

Everything was good about them other than the fact that they would explode after about 20,000km

Hmmm, 12a or 13b would be too heavy and cumbersome I think. But the Norton was a rocketship - here's a British Superbike race from the 80's, the Norton absolutely creaming Gixxers and RC30's (should do as they were 750's).
It'd be great to see different engine types incorporated into bike racing like this - I think it'd bring a whole new level of interest into the sport.

Yes that is cool. Same motor, But more the look of a sportbike. That motor in a CBR1000 frame and fairing. or something with that look. :yeah:

Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire. It's been tamed a bit since then, but the jump's (The Mountain) still there!

Here is some more links with the nortons including the new nrv588, shes a bit more than a polished up f1 its got variable intake tracts similar to the design mazda used when it won Le Mans with the rotary in the early 90s and a completly new internal engine cooling design, it has electric fans instead of the augmentor venturi type design they fitted to the exhausts to suck cooling air through the engine, sounds impressive anyway!

and for the old norton watch the jap bikes get a proper hiding here!

Would luv to hear that at full song!
Having owned an RX4 coupe and a 13B RX7, with those straight headers it would be LOUD.

Sounds like you have never owned or worked on one...:oi-grr: I rebuilt my RX3 and itd done 80000k last time I heard and still going strong...

Id go for a 10a out of an early R100 if you could find one. Im sure I heard of a guy that used 1 rotor/housing from a 13b with modified eccentric etc...

I can put you in touch with a few people in Hams and Tauranga that could help you out...;)

Can’t believe this thread is still going.

My experience with Mazda rotaries is limited, but it doesn’t need to be much more advanced to looking at one on a mate’s floor & giving it a trial heft.

Heaavy!

Man it looks like a car engine. . . .oh wait.

Or should that be Oh weight?

So why would you bother trying to fit it in a bike? With all the paraphernalia fitted it would be ridiculous.

The Norton was porpoise built as a bike engine, but they were fighting an uphill battle against noise & overheating & that was on race noise regs rather than street ones & traffic jams. The JPS replica road versions confirmed that it was bordering unfeasible with early CBR600 performance.

A car engine is a non starter for a sportsbike.

If you want alternative power & great power to weight you need look no further than a hot RG500 in a modern chassis, or Trinity Cheetah for less weight & up to 630cc twin, or one of the silly Cheetah triples.

Wouldn't putting a large rotary engine in a bike create insane amount of inertia? I know by the end of world war 1 rotary engines in planes basically stopped them from turning right. Due to the gyroscopic effect, any applied torque was was shifted at 90 degrees off. EG pull stick = roll left. Killed a lot of pilots.

Haha nice:clap:

No different type or Rotary. Google it.

That would be cool though. Watch out putting the sidestand down, you may lose a leg!

OK I'll trust you on this. I dont actually have a clue about how the modern rotary works. But as long as there is a large rotating mass and no counter rotating mass the gyroscopic effect will still exist.

As well as the Brap brap brap sound?

F5 Dave
19th August 2008, 15:07
As I said Google it, I'm not even going to try & spell epitrapzoidal or whatever, but probably has less gyroscopic effect than a crankshaft. The Norton are also reknown for having less engine braking than a 2 stroke. Whereas WWI planes the whole (conventionally combusted) engine rotated & fixed crankshaft. . . . Or some such nonsense.

On the RE5 the rotor spins inline with the bike not at 90 degrees (ie the same way as the wheels) See attached

last one i recall was a 1991 FZR 1000 which had been streetfightered and converted to run a 1.0L rotary out of a car.
Had good bursts of flame out the exhaust.
Its in a book i have at home if your that keen to find out.

This is the airplane rotary engine you are talking about, different to a Wankel, Some crazy bastards have still but them in bikes.
