View Full Version : Should Mental Pants reset everyone's rep points?

Should everyone's rep
be reset??

The Bling Thing's out of hand.

The Rarefied Strata inhabited by the Ancient Worthies is all but inaccessible to new forum users.

The Rank Members List By Rep Points (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/memberlist.php?&order=DESC&sort=reputation&pp=30) page may or may not have anything to do with how much each of the said members is truly loved by the masses.

Is my 33,000-odd rep point ascendancy deserved, or a simple product of the fact that I've hung around these parts whoring it up for nigh on five years?

Should cowpoos even be on that list?

These matters of mystery shall remain forever unanswered, unless drastic action is taken!

I hereby call for the immediate resetting of every forum user's reputation points to 0 (or, perhaps, to 1, for matters of 'senior member' expediency).

KB is, of course, Not A Democracy, but who knows; mayhap the plea of the masses shall sway Mr Trousers as he sits on high?

Brothers and sisters, let us vote.

Edit: ATTENTION ALL NUMBSKULLS WITH SHORT ATTENTION SPANS - THIS WILL NOT REMOVE ANY EXISTING REP COMMENTS, IT WILL JUST RESET THE TOTAL.

I should note, by the way, that this will only affect the displayed total.

All of your historical rep comments received will remain as they are.

I'd really love to reset everyones bling count to 0. The fun thing about that is that not one single person would ever be able to send a red or green. They'd all be blue/grey. Now that sort of thing appeals to me lol.

Being realistic (unfortunately) I'd reset to 10, the absolute minimum for handing out green.

You can still give green rep if you are on zero rep, but have a post count of over 10 - you'd just give much fewer points than with your rep weighting behind you. Course, if you have several thousand posts, you can give more again, so stuff would still happen, just a lot less points being passed back and forth.

absolutes are almost always about masturbation.

how relevant is it that someone with 5000 posts onboard has 10,000 rep points when another person with just 500 posts has 1100 rep points?

seems to me the latter is more worthy than the absolute................

until we see 'reps per post' points and the reps can be traded for credits against some kind of motorcycling purchase; it's all bullshit and should merely be laughed at as are 13 year old kids with their hands wrapped around their dicks

No, I am of the opinion that we should form a committee to find out if that is the best option, and then form another committee or delegate if we must, to word the next poll to decide if we should have a Poll that COUNTS, and then if it is decided that the results will count, we will need to form a new poll, so the masses may vote.
If the result is a yes to resetting the bling, then a further committee will have to be formed to decide the date that this should happen, best that be done by a poll too!

FFS! people, this is a website where we all come to share information, pull the piss etc. It is not a democracy! Waste of time even debating the subject really.

I raise your set to zero with a more complex but ultimately more fair system.

A rep point has a limited life, say 1 year, so at any time your total is only from the last years reps? That way you loose all your old points and it wont need resetting periodically like your solution.

Go forth and programme.

Really it makes no difference to me whether we have rep or not. No problem with a red along with a comment as to why its there and some of them are quite witty and deserved. Often makes me take a look at my own writers voice as I may have been misunderstood. But there are those (slackjaws) that just type unintelligent abuse in atttempts to harass. I suspect this is not the intention of the Rep system.
Conversely the green is often an acknowledgemt of agreement, and I cannot imagine much abuse in that area except for it possibly giving the odd one (slackjaws again) the perception of superiority over other contributors. Hence the often hail of abuse over some debated subject.
If your gonna wipe it yearly or similar then my view is to wipe out the lot.

What was initally started was actually a reasonable idea. But like many things someone with the ability has come along and fucked it over to the point thats just a crock of shit. I think the site fidllers could start playing with themselves at this stage and leave the poll, which has clearly been changed and does not portray the feelings of KBers. Either put things back they was regarding the poll, because that one is bollocks compared to what I saw when I first posted. oh, and I really dont give a rats arse about the rep remember. What I do mind is when someone with obviously the control has fecked about with it. This is JR's poll and thread, not here to provide you with amusement sonshine and out of all the threads Ive read this should not be in PD, it should be in site stuff. FFS MT, get yourself a bike to ride and spend a few hours in the saddle because what your doing just makes me want to call you a arse...:Oi::Oi::Oi:

But on the other hand, I do like what you have done with the rep, bloody awesome! How about putting the poll back to how it was but this time make it visable to who voted. I'd STFU if that was done dude...

The Rarefied Strata inhabited by the Ancient Worthies is all but inaccessible to new forum users.
Firstly, I disagree. If you look at the Members List, sorted by reputation, there are relative nooblies who have a substantial number of reps (courtesy of posting rude or silly things that appeal to other nooblies), while other fossils/dinosewers/senior members are relatively low down the list. So the "reputation" points are really either "popularity" or "infamy" points, depending on how they're used. Either way, they have little to do with the worthiness of posts or the member who posted them.
Secondly, I don't really care (point one was just a logic thing, and rebuttal to your comment). I don't care enough to vote. It's nice to be able to comment on (praise or rubbish) someone's post without having to PM them or publicly post in the thread, but the rep points themselves are meaningless.

... and does not portray the feelings of KBers. Oh and big friggin deal deal that KB is not a democracy ...

Unless a significant proportion of the regular viewers (1200+ of them) voted in this poll it is in no way representative at all. So at least 600 people (half of the daily regular number) need to vote before I'd even consider taking the result seriously. But that won't happen because so few people actually give a rats arse about rep.

I was always going to reset the poll to it's correct state (and have now done so) after a few hours. It's always very interesting and educational to see who comes out and gets highly offended and about what.

... This is JR's poll and thread, not here just to provide you with amusement ...

I believe Mr J Random started this thread and poll as a wind up and is sitting in front of his computer having a hell of a laugh. What he didn't expect was that I'd pick it up and run with it by pushing it onto the news page and get as many people as possible in on it. His responses in this thread would tend to back up that it is in fact a piss take.

Post the feedback - this is a forum after all.... or pm the person.... why wank on with the rep?

I like the link from the feedback back to the post. The mechanism itself is quite elegant rather than firing off a PM, embedding a link etc. It simply becomes an instant, linked short message.
Agree with what you say though (tempting to bling you just for the irony)

Wanking on about anything egotistical just turns into a facebook type race where people try to get the most "friends"...

I'm up there in the rarified strata as JR puts it and to be honest it's simply a reflection of the length of time I've been here. There are many others contributing as much or more (significantly more) than me... so the number of blingy thingies I have is a measure of what? How many blings I have!

It's like the IQ debate - it's a measure... of what? IQ! There are inferences that can be drawn from it, but at the end of the day an IQ score only reflects how good one is at sitting IQ tests.

Same with bling - it's simply a measure of popularity, and I never realised popularity was a contest. It's not, never has been never will be- except to the insecure. Ergo my want to ditch red and green, but keep the feedback side of it (for ease of use)

If I understand the technical side of things this could all be achieved in one fell swoop by simply setting everyone's bling to zero. No-one would be able to bling anyone with any points, so we'd all STAY on zero, but the feedback would persist. No code changes at all (says he never having seen the code... and knowing bog all about it except as a user)

Oh for sure. But for the most part those sort of posts are actually pretty rare. Most people (myself included) generally flick off some glib remark rather than actually think about what was said.

Also, I too give people rep rather than making a post than adds nothing other than well said. Actually, I've been known to dish out the better part of 3000 rep points in a day (there are no restrictions on Administrators in the rep system) and some people have recieved a good 300-400 points simply because a series of posts were top quality.

I think the idea of reputation point decay is a good one! However, let's make it more interesting and introduce exponential decay of rep points. Given that R represents your reputation point total and t denotes the time the decay can be described as:

dR/dt = k*R(t), where k obviously is a negative constant that will determine the rate of decay.

The rep system is innovative and a part of KB's DNA.
If other sites dont have it thats all good, Kiwi Biker is 'stand alone' when it comes to biker sites, the format is pretty much the same elsewhere but KB is Big Daddy ....others can only emulate.
Quite interesting that another bike site was considering closing the doors due to lack of activity.
ALL of the "weird shit" that is KB's DNA (even the mod's), adds up to what this place is.

Exactly Swoop, KiwiBiker has set the benchmark in Biker Sites. It has exploded over the last 5 or so years. I have only been here for half that time. It will continue to evolve, some may like it and some may not. I have heard some of the 'Day 1' entrants complain a bit about ''How it use to be''....tuff shit, this is how it is now and it will forever change, not everyones cup of tea or Bourbon but I for one beleive KB King of all Biker sites and I wouldn't go anywhere else, no need.

This is why the rep system needs to go.

Reporting this to the moderators is a bit like complaining that someone pulled your hair. Nothing comes of it and Mr Tough guy STILL feels he can use the rep system to dish out abuse.

timely indeed; i received a green bling but with attached abuse because of my posts on this very thread.

yes, the rep system is stupid and allows idiots to escalate or initiate flame wars

Given the way you comport yourself, that would mean that you have little regard for anyone. I get the feeling you think every other human being is an ignorant tosser.

not at all, at least 10% are quite intelligent judging by this forum

nah, it's success is only because it was pretty much first and it has the numbers.

other sites are better but the bigger audience is here (but perhaps without the quality)

we really should leave red rep as it is. gives us a chance to voice why we think the post was retarded, just like how green rep gives us the option to encourage quality posts.

if some insecure newbies are that worried about their e-penis that they want the rep reset they really need to have a long hard think about what is important.

the only change i approve is putting an 12 or 24 month expiry date on rep to prevent issues where we need some huge scale for members with a million points... what's up with this new colour coding?

McJim
6th April 2008, 00:05
Here's the idea - although the votes seem to be on the "no" side or the moment what if the vote was turned so people with the most to lose had more voting weight. So for example jrandom's vote is worth 33,000 and mine ws worth around 11,500. that would be truly fair now wouldn't it?

It was all my idea. I've been on KB for five years as of July '08 and have over 33,000 rep points, more than anyone else.

the only change i approve is putting an 12 or 24 month expiry date on rep...

VBulletin stores rep totals as a single number against each user in the database. It doesn't sum rep transactions historically whenever it needs to find the total points.

Putting 'expiry dates' on points associated with each rep comment would require implementing significant additional complication in the system.

Are you volunteering to code it up?

motorbyclist
9th April 2008, 23:58
couldn't be that hard surely? i'm not too bad with php and databases, plus got some software engineer and web designer friends;)

but if the rep doesn't have the dates already recorded (which it does atleast for the last 50 shown on the user control panel) it'll need resetting

Yes, yes and fuck off not me!!

In theory it could be done (cron job that totals rep once every 24 hours) but screw that. Too much like hard work and not exactly a good use of server resources.

Besides, I've got something sorted out that will please the vast majority of people (yeah right :crybaby:). Won't be implementing anything until vbulletin 3.7 comes out though.

The rep system can be a good thing in that, the bad comments left by someone you dont know must surely come from a very very uptight person. Well, thats the I see it. They must think (in thier own little world) that they are hurting you with a little red dot. Or, stroking your thigh softly with a green one?

There should be an option in your User CP added to have or not have rep received!!!
