View Full Version : The GS is dead, and broken bones sure hurt.

Well it's four weeks to the day that I was knocked off my old GS. Going home up Ngauranga Gorge, 4.25pm. All I can remember is indicating to change lane, checking behind, and waking up in the ambulance.

The outcome is two broken hands (left thumb -plaster up to the elbow, right hand has three pins in the outside of the palm). Morphine is really great. Looks as if it's going to be a couple more weeks before the plaster comes off, but the pins might get pulled next Friday.

The GS is a write off. The generator housing, right footpeg and brake lever are all gone. Exhaust buggered, front wheel knackered, so too expensive to fix.

My helmet is a write off. Crack on the right side of the mouthguard, and deep gouges on the right top, side and visor. Jacket (armoured textile) torn down the right. Trousers (armoured textile) the same. Right boot's a bit beaten up, but my gloves aren't too bad funnily enough.

Luckily insurance has paid for new helmet, jacket, and overtrousers. Sort out gloves and boots when I can use my hands properly. New bike is being arranged.

All I can say is that I feel bloody lucky. This is my first injury accident in almost thirty years on the road. The ambulance, hospital staff, police, insurance people, and even ACC have been great!

Go back to work part time next week. It will be a bit of a struggle, but I'm looking forward to it, and my sons will be glad to have me out of the house for at least half a day.

I'm not looking for sympathy, just reminding you to take care out there guys. Doesn't matter how long you've been driving/riding, or how often you travel over a piece of road just takes a small mistake, and OUCH!!!!.

Better stop, hands getting a bit sore.

Merry Christmas. Hopefully I'll be back on the road soon.

Any criminal or civil action likely against the perpetrator responsible for dislodging you from your ride?

Good to hear you're on the mend.

Yes well I've seen various states of undress whilst riding, since "summer" hit, I would have to say the all time criminal was a twat with t-shirt, shorts and those slip on scuff type shoes!!! Although he was wearing a helmet - don't see why though there is obvioulsy nothing in his head worth protecting!!

Wish you a quick recovery Pwalo. I remember there was a lot of discussion on here hours after your crash wondering who & what happened. Now we know.MD

I've seen a fair few lady scooter riders in Welington lately wearing sandals and slip on shoes - gives me the creeps.

What?

Morphine is really great... ...and even ACC have been great!

I think I see a relationship between these two statements ;)
Good to hear you are on the mend

Don't mean to go off topic and detract somewhat from the original thread but it gets me thinking what kind of people do this kinda thing? I'm sure some of it is blatant disregard for their safety, ignorance? Either they haven't been through the basic skills handling course and are riding without a licence... all of the above? Fucked if I know. :spudwhat:

Ouch, ooch...pain! Good to hear your're on the mend. A timely reminder that, even after 30 odd yrs of no majors, we arent bulletproof. I must try and remember that next time I swing a leg over. - mind you. Im still sore and bruised from trying to intimidate fellow inspectors at our cart racing last tuesday!

man, that all sounds truly horrible, and it serves to remind me that vigilence is all important on the road, glad you have survived to tell the tale, I hope your hands will be ok in the future, and the pain will soon be gone for you. cheers L

:Offtopic: sorry but these people have not ever seen the damage done by not wareing the right gear... I remember seeing a girl (when I was 10 or so) that had only a bikini on and was knocked off a stepie and cought up under a car..... no blood just raw white meat, she healed but was a nut case from that day on.
hence I always wrap up and always will  show these idiots the bikers ward at Burward Hospital....... and they will soon change ther minds.
