View Full Version : Safety message for splitters talking off at the lights

Finn
4th April 2008, 07:25
Not everybody in cars drives like a pussy from the green. I gave this chap a hell of a fright this morning when I nailed it from the lights to catch another set of lights 100 metres ahead. He looked awkward and not quite sure what to do as I was in front and he was still riding in the middle so he thought giving me the finger was his best defense. He would have seen me laughing at this stage.

When I've split and in front of the queue, I always nail it until I'm sure I have cleared people like myself who don't wait for paint to dry before getting to the speed limit.

Yeah, the 4 wheeled one. Funnily enough, I told my mates last night that the black beast had arrived and turned up on the Magic which they didn't know I owned.

I would've liked to have seen that.

Yeah, I know what you mean, Mr Finn. I nearly got caught out last week when taking off from the lights and the guy on my right decided it was a race, and nearly hit me. Luckily, his vehicle wasn't a Mighty SUV like yours, and a little twist of the wrist was all I needed to make sure I was out of the way.
I've also stalled it a few times taking off from the lights, after splitting to the front. :o
The VFR's quite happy taking off with very few revs on board, but sometimes I've been a bit dozy. Great, innit? Split to the front, then stall on the line. Not a good look...

Finn

I left plenty of room for him, it just gave him a fright. He was never in any danger and I wouldn't have a go at a fellow biker. Now had he have been on a scooter, that's another story.

Get fucked! :Pokey:
I don't usually do this, but there are places where I do, because I think it's safer, like turning right into the top of Glenfield Road. If I sit to the left of the right-turning lane, then I either have to squeeze in behind the person at the front, or go around the outside (like the buffalo girls). Either of these strikes me as more dangerous. I've been clipped by people taking off and jumping the green when I'm sitting between lanes - my safety comes before any irritation me parking in front causes.
I don't see how it hurts - there's no way I hold up the person at the front of the queue, as I'm sitting there, bike in gear, with the clutch just on the friction point, and I'm off around the corner before they've even gone, "Uh.... oh yeah.. the light's green!"
I don't get it?
Why would this bother you, Mr Devil? Please explain.

Nah, I always make sure that the people at the front are aware I am there. Best way to make sure they see you is to move into their field of view.

The distinction between turning and straight ahead lanes is pretty irrational as well.

Dunno about you fellas, but it does happen quite often that I "filter" to the front even if there's only one straight ahead lane... (We actually have roads like that down here.)

Devil

Nah snot. The likelyhood of someone roaring off on a turning lane is slim. Plus sitting out to the side on a bike trying to jump ahead is a bit dodgy.

It's the ones that pull in front of you then have the reaction time of an elephant. Yes, people on bikes do it to.

I don't generally lanesplit, as there's no real point on the roads I commute on. However, if I'm on a bit of motorway and the traffic's not moving I will.
OTOH, I filter to the front at the lights a lot of the time, especially in the morning, as I hate sucking up fumes from all the cars taking off at the lights. Plus by the time all the cretins go, "uh... oh... say wha..? Oh yeah - the light's changed..", and put their knobs away, put the car in gear, taken the handbrake off, etc., the light's nearly ready to go orange again.
That just won't do, in the Wacky Races! To win, you have to floor it the millisecond the light changes.

There's alot of cages around that are getting into the 0 to 100kph in 6 secs category and they can be on top of you real quick if you split and head to the center of the lane. Alot of small motorcycle capacity riders over estimate their cycles acceleration.

My VFR's electrics die whilst I'm idling so it appears I've stalled at the lights

They magically restart after the traffic has zoomed past me.

I've noticed my commuting style has become more aggressive and tend to be lanesplitting through traffic that isn't travelling much slower than the limit. It's not a good habit, especially since I always noticed the car I dodgiely passed a minute ago is now right up my arse at the lights because the lights will always, ALWAYS soak up any time you might have saved since they don't recognise you and don't delay turning amber. Actually, remembering this is making me angry, that's why I'm aggressive...

I always pull in front of a car.

2 reasons:

1) in case another bikes comes through, he can also get to the front alongside me,

2) for whatever reason I dont pull away (breakdown, stall etc..) its much safer to hold up a lane of traffic, than be stuck in the middle of 2 lanes of traffic with fuckwit cagers trying to get past on either side.

Screw cages. I own the road.

i dont... i still havent got over some 7 years of push biking to school and back every day, so im still stuck on push bike speeds. im a sook when it comes to speed. i wont overtake unless i know i can get past easily, and i wont lane split [cept once when i was stuck in the round the lake taupo traffic and the ginny was turning my legs into a roast, lol.]

I wouldn't say a lot. Some, but still even on my 250 I can do it in ~5 s. And from 0 to 50 km/h it's probably as fast as anything rear-wheel driven is likely to be. Not that many Enzos or Carrera GTs around - at least not where I commute.

Come visit the Garden City and experience the morning rush-hour. It is truly terrible. I love my bike, if for no other reason then simply the fact that it allows me to move at a reasonable pace at any time of the day.
I've gotten to the point where I get irritable and annoyed whenever I have to go in to the centre in the car...

I was lucky when I lived there, as I only had to commute from St Martins to Riccarton. So, of course, I varied the route, and added some extra long-cuts from time to time. It was good getting up to 160km/h on the way to work, and stretching my 7km commute to 20 or more.

This morning I was lane splitting behind a gu on a black VFR. He was really terrible and refused to go through gaps that he could of easily made it through so he sat by the driver's window staring at them and revving his engine as hard as he could (still pretty quiet..)

This just pissed everyone off and when he finally squeezed past them I was left with the aftermath when trailing behind him.. People blocking me off on purpose and all the rest of it..

Bloody prick.

I disagree - even though this cutting across at the front of a line isn't something that I do. I figure if you have filtered to the front on an underpowered bike it is probably the for the safest to move in front of the lead car so that they know you are going first (other than not having gone lane-split of course) Sitting 3 across at 2 lanes just invites the cars on either side to have a go. And when it';s a smaller bike or a scooter, they usually do. Agree it's a pain when guys do it and aren't fast off the line but I'd rather see someone hold up the first car for 2 seconds than be caught in the middle overtaken both sides.

Same goes for scooters that ride in the gutter. Not a good idea as it invites cars to overtake even where real close. Sure I wish that they would run faster bikes but they are better to hold their lane than compromise safety (also why I hate riding a push bike in traffic).

In the 50 or 70 K zones?

Over here, there is often a gap at the lights, where, for some reason, the vehicle in front will hang back a car length from the line. Can split and get 3-4 bikes at the front, sometimes.

fileteing to the front on an underpowered scooter is what gives bikes a bad name.

if u in front you nail it. Thanks for letting me though, i won't hold you up. Which negates (sp?) the issues of staying the split position of pulling in front of car.

i pull in front of car in case another filterer comes up behind me.

i just HATE the way some Bikers automatically veer left or right as they take off ---- arogantly assuming that it's some dozy cager in the car they are next to [instead of moi :innocent:] ............. anticipating they'll do this i take the time, on take off, to pull away from them a little - giving them extra space; it's very gratifying to see the number i STILL beat away from the lights, even after penalising myself like that an me driving a little getz an all.............

yeah - i know i'm nasty .... but honestly, they shouldn't filter if they aren't quick enough to hit the throttle and get the hell out of the way of the traffic the minute the lights change .

Have you ever stalled your bike? I have managed it once when it mattered... Not a nice feeling! And hell yes, I was cringing on the inside, bashing myself getting the bike going ASAP.

One thing that can be both dangerous and annoying are when cars start rolling forward before the green light even comes on - meaning that you have to take off out of a "tunnel". Pulling in front of the car prevents this most of the time.

+1 to both comments. Better safe than sorry.

I make sure that I only split if I know I'll be faster at the green light. I might misjudge a car, but that didn't happen yet, and I'd rather have a fast car behind me than racing me.

If I can't take off from the light or drive faster than the cars, I just don't lane split and lose a few seconds of my day, not a big deal. Not that I often split anyway...

flatter my ego be damned!

if i am at the front of the queue - i will pull away in my normal reaction time and at my normal take-off speed ...

there is NO WAY on this green EARTH that i am going to dick about to spare the feelings of some thoughtless twit who has filtered down next to me on the arrogant assumption that just being on a bike gives him [or her] the skill and reactions necessary to take off without being a danger or inconvenience to other road users...

for the sake of clarity, i am ONLY talking about filterers taking the central positon between two vehicles at the lights - or 'lane sharing' with the front vehicle ....... i am NOT talking about instances where a filterer occupies a space IN FRONT of the first veh at the lights

When I'm in the cage the silliest pricks I see are the ones that try and lane split at ther bottom of Haywards where you turn right to head to Lower Hutt. Once I was in the left lane and this dick on a Ducati took off in the middle on his bike and didn't seem to be able to hang it hard right on take off and cut right in front of me because he basically went straight ahead and almost ran off the edge of the road and I nearly hit him and would if I hadn't dabbed the brakes to miss him. The next one I'm in the right lane and this time a guy on an R1 does the same trick splitting up the middle and when we take off he does the old straight ahead trick too and by then I'm off around the corner and he takes a while to get up speed and pass. On a curved take off those boys need to learn a bit of bike control.

Anyway nice one Finn - give them the learn. That's what the human race is about eh - winners and losers and you've got to teach the losers a lesson. :2guns:
