Any KB'ers down this way give me a yodel ! i will be in the pub tonight - so give me a text/call if you want to join me! 021 2950 352

....the guy that is riding my new bike up to auckland from christchurch has just called me to say he just got pulled by the plods and lost his license trying to make the ferry at picton.

I need a flight from auckland to either wellington or christchurch ASAP ! ! !

Never flown in a plane apart from coming to NZ and once to oz.

The other option is someone that is willing to do a road trip?

Ya must know some right nongs, I wonder what sort of thrashing your 'new' bike was getting on the way north?

I'd have more respect for another guys bike, now the silly twat has not only inconvenienced his stupid self but is costing you time/money/stress needlessly.

Oh, hope you get a cheap quick solution to your dilemma.

Mully
4th April 2008, 10:49
Where is he?

We flew to CHCH and relocated a rental car to Picton for Budget last year. $20/day plus your gas and two days to drop it to Picton ferry terminal.

Might be cheaper than flying to WLG and getting to ferry.

have you actually phoned the airport instead if just looking online? i bet you if you went down to the airport you could get a flight direct to christcurch, even though they are booked out, you would probably get a seat from somebody not turning up.

Correct, and the ferry has a position for a motorcycle and passenger who won't turn up.

Secure the bike to place of safety, and organise recovery at your lesiure. Or get it freighted, about $400 I'd guess from Picton.

Exactly. Relax Disco, there's always an easy solution. Find out where the bike and keys are and get someone to pick it up and store it until you can get down there.

In that case use the right people for the job. Call a travel agent and ask them about flights.

You will have more chance of getting the info you need in the timeframes you have.

Coldrider
4th April 2008, 11:15
There is heaps of car & boat storage places in Picton, you get the motorcycle transporter company to get it up to you, instead of all the effort you need to go to to retrieve it yourself.

Tank
4th April 2008, 11:17
oh, oh, another idea - call trucking companies - they may have drivers heading down that way who could help. And Im sure they would enjoy having some company.

esp if you offer them a "A hitchhikers payment"

Yes I agree, Busa Pete. I bought my BMW from Chch and considered flying down and riding back but would have needed time off work and in the end it was cheaper and less hassle to get motorcycle movers to collect and deliver it. Hope you get it sorted DD. New bike fever (NBF) makes us do strange things..........

Why does that not surprise me?

There's really only one road North out of Chch. It's a clear night, take a bearing on the Southern Cross and head northish. Around 170km start looking for a township (it's a small one) and a BP station.

When y' get to Blenheim (can't miss it) bear westish to Picton. When y' feet get wet, stop. You've reached Cook Strait.

Even you can't go wrong. Keep the sea on your right hand, and the big mountains on your left hand.

(EDIT You can grab some sleep on the ferry)

I am in Kaikoura,, you have to travel thru here tonight to get to Picton. I texted you but if you want to get to Picton Overnight via STHW1 you go thru here about 180kms north of CHCH. Then about 140-150 kms to Piton ferry. If you are going to be here after midnight you will not get Petrol for you new bike...... But I run a Security Business here and have a guy working over night.. He could carry a 20litre container if I asked him and you could meet him here, and get some gas to get you to Picton. But I need to know before about 930pm... is so reply here,, and I will provide contact details.. or something to make it work..Cash to cover roughly is fine..

Dan, be aware that there's fuck all places to get petrol along that road (unless it's change din recent years). If you miss Kaikoura, you'll need a range of at least 350km to make Picton. There used to be petrol a t Ward, I think, but it was a one pump place back then.

Shit luck with the guy getting sprung.

Best option fuel wise is to leave ChCh fuel up at Amberley hoot through to Kaikoura (organise the arranged fuel) the Servo there shuts early if it's a quiet night, then head through to Blenheim (189kms ChCh -Kiakoura, 132kms Kiakoura -Blenheim, 29kms Blenheim to Picton) Get the early morning freight Ferry  no need to book or anything just pay at the terminal and ride on, Best feeds too as they cater for the truckies!!

DinnMuzz
4th April 2008, 19:05
Ward not 24hrs,, as I said my guy can carry gas,, or could direct you to a wharf pump we just talked about that can use eftpos card to get 96 unleaded only,, not 91,, but that is a option..

T.W.R
4th April 2008, 19:12
Just watch for Cops around Amberley & Cheviot and then from Seddon to Blenheim.

The Sundown rally is happening so there's a safety buffer there, that's a Greta Valley 80 odd Kms north of ChCH.

Don't hit the Turps as the Booze Buses will be out and about north of ChCh.

ChCh, Amberley, Kiakoura, & Blenheim are your only fuel options this time of night

Whelp, I've got him at mine now, printing out copious wads of maps (), but fuel will be the biggest obstacle. It's a ZZR1100 with a 21L tank, so I reckon if he fills at Cheviot he'll easily make it. He's got an eftpos card, so as long as there's eftpos at pump at either Cheviot or Kaikoura, he'll be alright. As long as he doesn't ride like he did on the way here!!

The bike turned up on the trailer then?
Yep. I went into town to find him outside one of the internet cafes around the square, having run out of time (again). We barely had time to introduce one another before the car showed up with the bike on a trailer. We decided that I'd follow them back to the guy's place where we'd take care of the paperwork, so off we went. Parked up outside the guy's place, got the bike off the trailer and the car (+ trailer) left, so we parked the bikes in the drive and took care of the paperwork.

For one or two reasons we didn't really want to hang around, so once all was done we mounted up, Dan on his new steed, and decided to head around to mine since it's on the way north from the guy's house anyway. That part went uneventfully. Managed to partly charge his GPS () using one of my USB cords - hopefully that'll serve as a backup - also printed off screeds of maps and instructions should it go pear shaped.

Anyway, after a beverage and more chatter about what to expect on the way north, we mounted up again and headed north, stopped at the Shell in Belfast (the one on the corner of Johns Road) where I gassed up, checked the ZZR but it was pretty much full, and carried on north to where the motorway starts... I pulled off at that stage and waved Dan on his way. So, I hope all goes well for him... if anyone's able to help him out in Wellington, maybe meet him at the ferry and guide him to the way north as well as fuel (and coffee ), I'm sure he'd appreciate it. I'm just glad I was able to play lead to get him safely on SH1 north... finding his way from the guy's house would have been a problem otherwise, you have to know Chch to know the way from there.

Nice to meet you Dan, even if it was only for a couple of hours! Good luck.

The guy didn't get quite as far as Picton. From what I understand he was about halfway between Kaikoura and Blenhiem when he got nicked doing 147km/h - instant 28 day loss of licence. So, his brother (not sure, but think he's from Christchurch) drove to collect him with a bike trailer on the back, loaded up the bike, and headed back to Christchurch. Meanwhile, Dan had arrived here and had to wait for them to get back, which was why he was lurking in an internet cafe in the square when I found him.

Hopefully he's made the 8am Bluebridge crossing (edit: nope, not on Saturday ) and is sleeping right about now...

He is in Picton, will be boarding the 1.15 Interislander sailing that arrives in Wellyvegas at 4.25.

I'm going to meet him at the terminal & assist as required, sounds like he didn't sleep much last night.

This is one heck of a story! Hmm... If he arrives in Welly at 4:25, with work tomorrow at 10am.... If he has the energy to ride to Taupo today/tonight he could comfortably make work tomorrow.

Already PM'ed Dan with an offer to stay here but if there is any one riding with him they are also welcome to stay  Will leave it up to Dan to decide what he's gunna do though lol

I could meet DD at Turangi to Taupo then depending on what time it is, my brother can take him from Taupo to Tokoroa... If he's going to Auckland tonight.

If he leaves Wellington at 5 (time to fuel up etc) he could get to Taupo by 10pm. Then after a nights sleep he could leave Taupo at 6am and make it to Auckland by 9:30... Would be a safer trip after some sleep

Great news that he made it to Picton in one piece and managed to get on the ferry. I wonder where he stopped for gas and if he got lost? Still, at least if he's back in the North Island there's more KBer support for the ride north. Good on ya those northern KBers helping our famous 'lost biker' out!

Is dan really that inept that he cant follow SH1 back to Home Base?
Some time ago SN4PD rode from CH-CH to Whangarei on his new 675 without a hitch, as for the tinted visor? does he not have a clear one at all? knowing that there would some riding in the dark times, why did he not take it? So far some SI KBers have helped Dan out which is exceptional, just like the NI's did a few weks back with Delphinus (which i might add, he made it up here from Dunedin without an escort, Dan is a big boy right?

Regardless of why he forgot to take one with him in the mad panic to get to ChCh - what kind of helmet does he have? I have a clear visor for a Shoei that he can use.

I am 1 minute off SH1.

Well I don't confess to know him THAT well but doesn't young Daniel have a bit of a penchant for getting lost?

There's a lot of Island between Wellington and Auckland.

I believe his GPS got nicked with his ride too didn't it?

We have all takin' the wrong turn before today aye Jamie? or past the road we needed to be on, either way, its SH1 all the way, wheres the hardship in that? If it were me I would going over the Takas to Woodville, through the Manawatu Gorge, left at Ashurst to Vinegar Hill which brings you out on SH1 just south of Mangaweka...but thats just me, I know the way GPS not included/needed.

No, he still has his GPS. The battery went flat on his arrival in Christchurch, but happily it has a USB-B plug, so I found a cord that fit and put a bit of charge into it using my computer and that cord. He had the brightness and sound up full which drained the battery quite fast, so we turned the brightness right down and switched the sound off, so if he only refers to it when he needs to it might last long enough. He's still got pages of maps we printed out for him though, so it's not all bad :)

WTF ? The 13:15 ? Why didn't he get the 05.45 am sailing. He'd be half way home by now. He left Chch before midnight, how long did he take to do a piddly 350km ?

Don't tell me, let me guess, he got lost !

He left here around 10.30pm... must've got to Picton and found a place to sleep, only to sleep in too long and miss the 05:45 sailing. I guess we'll find out in due course.

I have just arrived home having ridden with Dan to Bulls - because from what all you unkind people were saying about his sense of direction, I just knew he would go straight ahead at Bulls and end up in Wanganui (to be fair, it IS easy to do).

The Disco Dan was last seen disappearing into the darkness up SH1 from Bulls at 22:03hrs as he tooted maniacly and wiggled his bum into the darkness. Surprisingly I'm only mildly disturbed by that vision.

We had a very very wet ride to Otaki but when we stopped for gas at Levin we noticed upon lifting our visors that the road was dry and so it stayed all the way. Since we were parting at Bulls  we celebrated with a burger and coffee. His ride looked dry, mine got wet again just south of Waikanae

I hope someone reminded him that daylight savings finishes tonight so he has an extra hour to get to work.

Yup ... and he was astounded and amazed at this news.

Dan's been to Taupo a few times so hopefully he knows how to get through Hamilton, there are a lot of signs through there as well. But I'm sure if you were up to it he wouldn't mind the company... Like I said in the text... Up to you Warr :)
