View Full Version : Tank Art

A while ago Quallman1234 asked me about my Space Spray Art, and wondered if I would be able to do something along the same lines on one of his tanks.

Now having never done this form of artwork on anything other than the posterboard, I thought hmmmmm could be a fun challenge.

So a tank was dropped off in short order, and I got to work on preparing the surface.

After spraying on a sealer, I applied several coats of black, and then a couple coats of white, letting them dry for a couple of days each, ended up with a surface I wanted. Onto the actual artwork itself.

This took roughly about 40 mins to complete. (No airbrushes, or ordinary brushes were used at any stage). A couple coats of clear spray to finish and it was left to dry in the sun for the rest of the afternoon.

Applied a few more coats of clear as a sealer, and whoila my first attempt at a tank painting.....

Enjoy

so no airbrush (or normal bush) was harmed in this painting.

What did you use?

DingoZ
4th April 2008, 22:53
Ordinary aerosol spray paint. And pages from magazines to create the texture of the planets and the background scenery.....

Exactly! I keep asking him that and he goes all cagey. It can't be bloody spray cans, it just can't. Can it?

Ewwww ... what kind of magazines do you read then? There's no boobs or bikes in your art. Kinky.

You are more than welcome to come around and watch a demonstration anytime......:)

And yes it's all without using a paint brush....

It's about layering of the colours and the smearing technique using the magazine pages....

The vid below is from the guy I learnt this off..

<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/kThEaIKy54s&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/kThEaIKy54s&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

Should give you an idea on how it's done......Nothing cagey about it...:)...Just hard to explain

Sure can put on a demo and show him the basics if you like....

And the fuel cap is real.....Put masking tape over it, then peeled the tape off when done....Didn't want to get any paint over it.....:)

Is it just a matter of the colours and then you make the shapes .
or is there actually any pattern off the magazine actually being transfered to the paint ?
I guess you need to use shiny paper , is that the only reason for a magazine?

It's a combination of the layers of colours and how you move the magazine once it has been placed ontop of the painted area. If you place it down, and then run your fingers across the top of the magazine page and then lift straight off you will get a pattern. Same as if you did the same thing but pulled or twisted the magazine and then lifted off....... The pattern also varies in accordance with how much of one colour is applied either over or under another colour.....

Try to avoid the magazine sticking to the paint, cause then it transfers the print and sometimes a thin layer of the magazine to the painting, and thats just wrong....:)

Yup it's glossy one sided posterboard. Thicker than ordinary art paper - it's gotta be, otherwise it would just soak up too much paint and shred....

so what sort of material are or is the actual canvas

homer

I also assume that the background colour is the first to go down
, guessing this ,as when you remove the magazine paper you want to leave the particular colour of that shape you make.?

DingoZ
5th April 2008, 19:54
so what sort of material are or is the actual canvas

It is posterboard, glossy on one side and matt on the other. It is thicker than standard art paper. So the paint doesn't soak it and shred it.... get mine from a supplier in the USA, as I haven't been able to source something the same over here as yet...:)

I also assume that the background colour is the first to go down

It is a mixture of all the colours, but sometimes the first coat down if left to dry slightly longer will stand out more, sometimes the other colours blend in to produce all sorts of interesting effects, all depends on how long they are left to dry before being smeared.....

Cheers to everyone who has commented on the Tank Art so far. Was really a fun challenge to do a painting on a Tank. Hopefully going to be doing some more....

Below are some other paintings of mine. Gives a better idea of what I mainly paint, which is the alien sci fi - mixture sceneries...

If you want a painting some are for sale, or I can do an original for you....That is the best thing about this form of art, no two paintings are the same.....

Once again cheers for the positive comments on the artwork....:) - And when Quallman1234 lets me at the fairings, we should have some more pictures to match the tank......:)

I have a couple a paintings that were made in a similar fashion by a fella I saw on Malorca back in '94 :)

As I'm sure the youtube clip shows it is indeed possible to do stuff like that just using spraycans. Looks surreal though!

Alrighty then. Kyle has just dropped the fairings off.

So I'll get to work getting them prepared in the next lot of days off.

I'll pick a day with some good weather and post up when I'm gunna be painting them and if anyone in the area is interested in having a looksee at them being done, we can make an afternoon of it..

Stay tuned for updates

**** Update ****

Okay started preparing the fairings that Kyle dropped up...

Hmmm these are going to be more of a challenge than the tank was.

Couple of coats of sealer, and then a coat of black to start.

Will leave these to dry (in between the rain, out in the shed)....

Will load up the before and progressive shots when I have some more done on them...

Stay tuned

:)

Anything ever happen with the painted fairings?

DingoZ
11th October 2008, 23:57
Due to a number of things - illness, the weather and work. Have not done anything with the fairings. But now since the weather is kicking back into the good stuff, have plans to get stuck back into the fairings and finish them off.

Stay tuned - won't be long

wow that tank work is awesome.

im going to get my mate to paint my front guard on my new bike... is there any thing i need to know to keep the paintwork mint?
or what paints i should use?

DingoZ
12th October 2008, 01:10
I use High Gloss paints from Super Cheap. And to finish off over the artwork I spray about lightly about 8 coats of a clear spray....
