Brit in North Island for 7 weeks. Buy or hire a bike?

hi i am lucky enough to be over in Tauranga for 7 weeks and was thinking of buying a bike and doing some riding trail days or races, but am i better off doing the organised 3 day tours one in the south island i was looking at was 3500 for a 5 day trip. i could get a decent old 2 stroke for that back home,
what do you think as i know the 7 weeks will go real quick . i have a pickup to cart a bike and some tools etc. anyone willing to show me around if i can find some wheels in time?? it looks like you have some fantastic riding here.
so where can i find a cheep bike quick?
do you think i am better off just doing the tours?

how much would you pay to hire a bike for your stay? i might be able to help, PM me. i have an XR400 that you might be able to rent. it would be perfect to see our nz trails on....
