View Full Version : Cage causes accident then drives away

This morning at around 6:30am my flatmate was on his way to work on his trusty wee cbr250 when oppisite Riverlands Estate just south of Blenheim a car turning right turned in front of him. He braked heavily hoping to avoid hitting it or moving into oncoming traffic only to have the brakes lock up on the damp road. He slid between the offending car and the traffic waiting to turn before the bike grabbed and highsided him. At this point the car sped off. The people in the cages waiting to turn rushed to his recovery....more power to them!!! He slid on his front for long enough that the lining on the INSIDE of his leathers melted to the left leg of his uniform pants and although relativly unmarked he is going to be bruised heavily. Lost some skin on the left elbow. He was wearing full leathers, pants and jacket, plus gloves and helmet, boots....but they are pretty messed up. The ambulance was called and took him to hospital.:doctor:...as were police...who have since 'done the rounds' of the industrial estate looking for the afore mentioned cage...all he could tell them was it was a white sedan....none of the other cage drivers got a rego either. At the moment....he's lying on the couch in good spirits...although his baby son has taken great delight in poking...prodding and generally 'putting the bash' on his dad.:devil2:
BEWARE of the dreaded unthinking....not looking cage driver!!!!:spanking::weird:

Lucky your mate's ok!
I hope the driver of the 'white sedan' gives himself away with all the sweating and paranoia he's bound to be experiencing...

this kind of behaviour just seems so typical of cagers. :argh: they should all be made to ride a bike for 6 months before they can get their cage licence! :bash:

I say we ban all cars, get rid of those silly speed limits, and make it so you have to put your knee on the ground at least 2 times on your commute. If not you get fined.

Glad to hear your mates OK and that he was wearing full gear to help keep him in one piece and not spread down the road like a cheese grater. I hope they catch the a wipe that caused it.

Well, as oblivious as some cage drivers are I wouldn't be terribly surprised if he didn't even see the accident...

It's not an excuse, but there is a difference between that and doing a runner after having caused an accident and knowing so.

I hope your flatmate will get through the soreness quickly!

Had that happen to me.. car pulled out on me within half a metre of me, I locked the tyres (I had only be riding about 6 months.. and it was wet.. on diesel, with a bee in me eye) and fell down, cage never even noticed. Just carried on driving.

Never got any rego and never bothered calling the police, a baby blue sedan description just wasn't worth it.

the cage driver will be sweating...the police will be waiting tomorrow morning for him to turn up for work. And he saw the accident.....cos he stopped in the middle of the road when he saw the bike...but it was too late by then.
Flatty showed me tonite where he ended up....he crossed the centerline trying to avoid, and locked up on the painted median lines....slid and got throwen across the right hand lane trying to avoid the cage. It was then the driver took off. Just lucky the on coming traffic was also turning right.

How hard do you think the police looked - just driving around eating doughnits , staring at white cars.

Someone get a rego next time and distribute via pm. I'm getting angry at all people who dont see me lately. I'm getting me some metal gloves and bashing in turn to the deserving. Fuk um I say ! :angry2:

The driver most likely is on that road at that time every day. He may change route for a while though. If someone had the time to watch and wait? Can't be that many white cars on that road in Blenheim?

Hey, Nade, I put up a biker down thread when I read about this in the paper. Sorry I didn't see your thread first. I sure hope the cops can find this jerk who drove off. It makes me so angry to read about people doing that!

Hope your friend isn't feeling too bad- the news article said chest and pelvic injuries, which made it sound really awful. Thank goodness his injuries were no worse. It could have been really bad with cars & trucks going 100km. Wish him well for me, please.

He is doing ok.....hasn't moved far off the couch. Few days off work.
He didn't get to see the bike after the accident.....but he's pretty certain that its a writeoff. He dosen't want to look at it at the moment so its being held at a yard in town till he's ready to go get it.

I agree, I had a drive off too.... Car pulled out in front, saw me hit the deck and did a runner. Coppers got her though!

I was lucky when I had a car u-turn right into me. I was being an idiot lanesplitting when I shouldnt have been and at a silly speed for the conditions. I would have done alot of damage to their car when my solid foot peg and handle bars scraped the shit out of their door, where as my lil bike was OK as my foot took most of the impact! I pulled over to the side and turned around to go over to them to give them my details and they had just driven off! Lucky for me, not at all lucky for them, except I reckon they are probably thinking that they were lucky that they "got away with it"!

Guessing it was an 80-100km/h zone from that. Could have been much much worse if that's the case.

He's probably wise to rest up a bit before he goes to see his bike. It will only make him feel worse again when he sees it all bent and broken.

I hope the cops find the driver pretty soon so your flatmate will be able to know that someone didn't get away with causing his crash. Again, best wishes to him from another local biker.

I lived in Blenheim for 17 years and thought all the drivers there were absolutely useless bast*rds. Dangerous k*obs.

Then I moved to Christchurch!!!:angry2:

I'm looking forward to the day when we only get to read "Motorcyclist avoids accident then rides away" threads.

Other than the 'only' part, it happens everyday, just people don't post about it. I went for a jaunt into town yesterday, turning right in the outside lane of two when a 4x4 in the inside lane next to me decided he wanted to go into the very outside lane of the 3 lane road we were turning into. Before I even left the intersection I considered this to be a possibility so kept an eye on him and looked for an exit path if needed. Of course he didn't see me and ploughed into my lane, directly where I was, I took evasive action, let him know I was there (not rudely) and rode away. Not 5 minutes later I was turning right into a dual-lane road, as I was approaching the intersection I observed a Lexus 4x4 parked on the side of the road I was turning into, with its front wheels turned towards the road, but no indicator. Once again I kept an eye on him and looked for an escape path, and sure enough he pulled out in front of me as I was almost parallel with him. I tool evasive action and rode around him, once again letting the driver know what he had almost just done.

I (along with everyone else) could fill this forum with tales like this every day. Just we know it happens all the time.

Must be fookin frustrating not being able to make an appropriate rude gesture with one hand while accelerating out of the way with the other!

I suppose you just use the horn?

Sorry to hear about the off but.....
It's one of those things that really should have been expected and the rider already making decisions about what I'm going to do if that car turns, Where can I go? while already slowing a little just in case. I'm not saying that this will guarantee that you avoid trouble out there but it will ensure that you are ready to react if you are already expecting the worst to happen.
Now to the real reason this happened. The car driver didn't see you.

Why?

What can you do to make yourself more visable?

These 3 things can make a huge difference to visability.

Dayglo vests. Maybe $30-40 for a good one. I realise some will think these are ghey but rather that than dead IMO.

Running lights (e'g visibike kits) - $69.00 Makes indicators glow so you don't tend to blend in with the following cars headlights in difficult light situations.

Positioning on the road. Well that's simple.

Come on guys help others see you and make your ride much less stressful and much more pleasant.

Im hearing you Anthrax but am firmly of the opinion that you could wear an orange cone on your head and it wouldnt make much difference. Best course of action is to work on the points described by Onearmedbandit.

Too many motorcyclists spend too much time, when riding, with other things on their minds. "What will I have for tea tonight", "That prick at work better watch out tomorrow", "Man, I'm looking forward to giving the Mrs one when I get home", etc. Nothing short of total concentration is what is needed - particularly when riding in amongst traffic.

If by 'the horn' you mean '12,000rpm of yoshi equipped GSXR1000' then yes.

Actually I still haven't moved the horn over to the right bar.

Nothing short of total concentration is what is needed - particularly when riding in amongst traffic.

For myself, I wouldn't say total (ie 100%) concentration is required, just an awareness. I quite often am thinking about other things, whether filtering through traffic or having some fun on the back roads, but my mind is always scanning my environment, looking for possible hazards. Everyone is different however so as a general rule of thumb 100% concentration is advisable.

Heh. Katman has a point IMO. I'm 100% into the cars in front. If a gap opens up while splitting etc, I keep an eye on the car in the other lane to see if they just want to duck across. I hate those dicks that hit the indicator as they turn the wheel to change lanes.

I'm just waiting for that one day they'll do it while my front and rear wheels are parallel to their front and rear wheel :(

So you pay 0% attention to the vehicles behind and to the sides? :eek5:

The ongoing saga......Police were unable to track down anyone 'stupid' or guilty enough to own upto being the car that left the scene...they have their suspicions but thats not enough to ping someone.
We got the bike today.....first time look at the damage.
Completely destroyed the left hand clipon...bent it like a banana and then it snapped...ripped the clutch cable out of its housing....funnily enough the mirror on the left is fine...but the right hand side smashed.....left hand main fairing is intact...but worn thin and deeply 'gravel rashed' with the mounting brackets compressed flat....its fiberglass so easily fixed as it hasent cracked. Rear indicator smashed...bulbs ok....gear shift has snapped the pin and rubber tag off but the lever is intact....foot peg was destroyed and ripped the bracket in half. Rear foot peg has been ground down but still functional. minor scraps to rear seat and fairing.....inner top fairings smashed as they were original plastic and really brittle. Front guard has twisted but forks and alingment are ok....wheel is running true and no damage. And its completely covered in thick dried mud from the ditch. and it started up first go with a bit of smoke as we expected...:scooter: All up most of the damage we can fix ourselves for next to fuck all...but we totalled up and reckon its gonna cost about $5-600 to fix max. this includes painting. All in all relativily cheap considering the speed and distance it travelled on its side. Rider is healing up nicley and looking forward to getting back to work on his other bike....a cbr600:rockon:
