I'm not quite sure if this is the right thread for a resto pictorial and ramble but it's about a sporty(ish) road bike so here we go.
xersxes (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/member.php?u=8221) hassled me on the bucket thread saying that Deanohit was telling him about it and since then he was having kittens just wanting to know more.
It's embarrassing as I have owned this bike longer than any of my other bikes and it still isn't anywhere near a condition where I could ride it, obviously:pinch:
I originally got this bike for doing a favour for a customer and helping them shift. Single guy moving into an inner-city apartment should be a sinch. :cool:
Four Ute loads and two flights of stairs at one end meant I earned that CB250RS. :beer:
Now I new this bike had an issue with a piston circlip at one stage which caused the gudgeon pin to scribe its damaging message into the bore. I'm not sure if this stage was during the Manfield track day he was using it for :spanking:
Or the ride home!
I also new that some time had past since that fateful day and nothing had been done to correct the wrongs of that fateful day. The owner told me that although the engine had been disassembled, every care and attention was given to putting everything in order and protecting it from the effects of corrosion.:yes:
So after the shift I ask where’s the bike? It's the only thing I haven't seen and I've moved all your stuff.
"It's at Makara Beach".
Oh, really?:shifty:
"Yeah, it's ok though we wadded it up really well".
Wadded it up? I didn't have an idea of what he was going on about.
It all became clear when finally got to the bikes last resting place.
Those familiar with Wellingtons West coast will have some idea of the exposed nature of the Makara beach settlement.
Uncovering the bike I swear I saw small crustaceans scurry away, I kneel down and grab the top timing sprocket, standing in the position it normally would in the cylinder head but the head is on the floor beside the bike.
The "wadding" consisted of a few scraps of calico that had long ago given up any of their lubricant holding properties.:no:
Every mating metal surface on the bike is seized solid and what’s not aluminium plastic, rubber or painted is flaky and brown.
It’s a full bucket of rusty shit and now I own it, great!:mad:
So fast forward to the relative present (cue that sound effect from Lost)and we have what you see in the pictures below. Every surface apart from the bodywork (yeah, I know:rolleyes: )has been returned to bare metal and painted, plated, polished or coated so it’s basically the opposite of how Honda wanted it to appear. The engine has been entirely rebuilt, though some of the rusty components still survive in there (after being wire brushed within inches of their lives) and I’ve had it running every now and to circulate a bit of what it lacked in its former home.
So as you see it here was were I got to about three years ago and apart from building a bench over the top of it haven’t done much more.
I have a wish list as long as my arm for parts to get this bike going and an even longer list of parts I need to make it look right. So in 2015 I might actually be able to ride it up the driveway, provided I don’t buy any more bikes or start another bucket project......
