Hiya
When my Sj50 gets up to a high speed (50kph+) I often (not always) hear a griding noise coming from the engine. It sounds sorta like a chain grinding. Not a really dangerous sounding rough grinding, but a distinct noise all the same. I don't think it made the noise when I got it 2 months ago.

I ran it on crappy generic mobil 2-stroke oil for most of this time (used about 150ml), but I've recently put Castrol TTS in it. Might this fix it?

I don't really know how to open up the engine to have a look or anything sorry:baby:

If it's speed related, the most likely candidate would be the variator. Could be something loose, worn rollers or a belt on the way out...

Sounds like the hampster's wheel needs oiling... :niceone:

I've decided that it maybe more to do with the engine being too cold, I need to warm it up for a good 3 or 4 minutes before I head out.

But if it's not and I do need to have a look around/oil some stuff, how do I get access to the engine/variator? Do I take the black metal side panel off, or the plastic one on the front wall of the seat?

Can anyone give me advice as to how to inspect the variator to see if that's the problem?
