Appeal judges have halved a six month ban and overturned the riding disqualification of a scooter rider who used his feet to cover his numberplate.

James Bell, 21, from Southampton, UK, was caught twice in 2007 speeding in 30mph zones, using his feet to obscure his registration number.

Mr Justice Penry-Davey, reducing the prison sentence to one month, said a disqualification may have been appropriate, but it would be wrong to impose one when it was unknown what was in the sentencing judge's mind.

what's the story with obscured number plates in NZ?

specificallly wofs infront of them, and/or having them way under the tail above the wheel hugger

The police seem to get a little bent out shape if your WOF covers part of your plate.. $200 fine. But I find if you write in with a photo more reasonable people will agree that it's a little excessive and cancel it!

That judgement comming from a country where a judge reckoned an acid-filled plastc lemon was not an offensive weapon does not surprise me......:rolleyes:

If he wasn't able to conceal the plate with his foot, then it was still recognisable/legal?
