View Full Version : Chain-guard legal requirement for WOF?

I've taken my chain guard off because I prefer the look without it (showing off the gold DID chain).

A couple of people have commented on how I'll get knocked back on a WOF for it. But I can't find anything that specifically says no chain guard no warrant.

Does anyone have any proof this is true?

Can't see any mention of one in the VIRM http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/certifiers/virm-in-service/motorcycles-v3-2.pdf so I'd say no worries.

The vacuum caused by the motorcycle passing a pedestrian could suck a loose scarf into the chain, dragging the pedestrian to certain death if not severe injury.Don't be an idiot and put your chain guard back on,an innocents death is not worth the price of your vanity.

Grey area. Knocked back by some testers under the 'dangerous exposed bits' clause. But not specifically required. I've known bikes knocked back on it. And bikes without chain guards go through tinme after time. One git even tried to claim that the standard SV100 chain guard 'wasn't big enough';. Plonker! Find a comformable WoF tester.

Yeah, yeah so we should all have fully enclosed chains like my 1970 A100 had - you know a "ladies guard" as they were known when I had more hair and girls didn't wear trousers and didn't want their dresses caught up in the gubbins. Remember the push bikes with the protectors over the front of the back wheel too?

Sweet! Well I'll just leave it off all the time, then. Frigging ugly piece of plastic. I want to show off my anal chain maintenance!

I had (about 20 years ago) a C15 BSA that didn't have a chain gaurd, Testing station gave me a warrant on the condition that I take the pillion pegs off. Bike barely had enough power to move itself and rider let alone a pillion so it wasn't a big deal. My MZ has a fully enclosed chain, bloody marvellous 30,000 ks and still on the original sprockets.

no chain gaurd is ok for wof as long as you dont have rear pegs
and you cant get any part of you caught in the moving parts

If no chain gaurd is a problem then how to the chopper guys get by with naked primary belts??

The same way they get away with stupidly loud pipes.

Choppers are just different.

Ask yaself the question.
"Is is worth the hassle of going to testing station getting knocked back for it not being on and having my day fucked up?"
Me --Id put the fucken thing back on -its only 2 x 6mm bolts after all
Then question if its needed once ya have a WOF

I want to show off my anal chain maintenance!

How do you maintain an anal chain?? Is this something I should be checking regularly

I don't think mine even has a chain.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I'd come up with myself. I just wondered, you know, if I really needed to put it back on just for the warrant.

Again I'd just do it.-some testers will give ya a warrent some wont
Ya may be perfectly legal but is it worth the hassle of argueing with him
