haha, yeah, just promise i'll be home before 5am this time:laugh:

shingo; will the vtr require us to remove the radiator to get to the front cylinder? might pay to check first incase we need coolant. remember that if it's got shims there's not much we can do if we can't swap them around to get it all right. might have to buy/find some once we know the required sizes and have another arvo to install them.

oh, and find a service/workshop manual before we start. need the valve clearances and diagrams of which bolts are hiding where

I would still like to change the fork oil in the shocks, if your up for it? I don't need to change the seals if their not leaking, or should i just get some anyway seen as they should be pretty cheap.

Ah Stephen, I gotta separate the tank and get inside to the throttle so I can tigthen up my throttle cables to get rid that massive throttle free play that I have at the handle bar.

I've taken the tank off before not by myself as I don't have any hose clamps and those special pliers to remove the high pressure hose from the tank.

Is this a do?

EDIT: this is for the 929 btw.

I'm keen to make a couple of (hopefully) straightforward adjustments to the baby VTR -

Wind up the rear preload a wee bit - but not too much as Ingrid still has to ride it (I tried with a shitty OEM toolkit suspension spanner - but the frustration shortened my life...)

Raise the bars back up again (top of the triple clamp has been droped down 10-15mm)

And if Mr Shingo is keen, he could swap for a set of after market alloy bars ;) But only if he wants to.

Will be along after work finishes at 4.30 - but probably shouldn't stay too long (but I should be allowed out to play as it's working on Ingrid's bike for her benfit:devil2:)

Aye, and always good to see :doctor: on a nice, simple machine like a GN - I'll definately be learning stuff!

Replace the dust and fork seals since you are doing it ($30 bucks for a pair of seals). Once done it will last 20,000 - 30,000km's without any problems. If your forks are non upside downs then it will be easier then USD.

EDIT: this is for the 929 btw.

Why do you need to take the hoses off when you are working on just the throttle cable. You just use a piece of plank to lift the tank at a 45 degree angle and you can remove the air box etc and do some engine work (The original hoses are long enough unless yours have been cut). I dont even remember my fuel hoses have clamps :pinch:.

Like Toto, is it ok if I came as well for a bike 101. Will bring plenty of beer :-). I have an Aprilia RS250

Yer, i have a lappy for in the shed, and a long cable so theres internet too

Pads? Cycletreads have em for about $45 a set, are you doing front and back or just the rear? They do a 3 for 2 on one of the brands (might be feredo), so if you're doing the fronts then you could get a free rear

Otherwise just do the rears

The radiator will need to be removed to get at the front cylinder, i've got plenty of coolant so no problems when re-filling is needed. I've had a look in the manual i've got and the valves don't use shims, they have an adjustment screw, so that should make it easier.

How long you reckon it will take to do the valve clearances? I won't be getting to their till after 7:30, so we can leave it till another time if it's gonna take to long.

I'll try get some fork seals and oil tomorrow, cause i really want to change the oil to hopefully improve the suspension on the front end.

Valve clearance? Takes about 4 hours if you are good and engine needs to be super cool to be done. How many k's has your bike done? Usually valve done around the 45000km mark unless it has been thrash.

Does your front forks have preload and damper adjustments? The only thing new fork oil will do is make it smoother i suppose. If you find the fronts are soft then you can try a heavier fork oil weight. Ask the shop

Bikes only done 14,000km. I was more interested in doing the valve clearances as a piece of mind sort of thing, not because it was due. I don't know how it was treated in japan and i'm not exactly easy on it myself at times, especially on the open road.

The forks are non-adjustable which is a bit of a pain. I was thinking about using the factory weight oil to see if it made it any better, if i still found it a bit soft i would try some heavier oil.

Unlike my tank which needed a primer too :). Good idea lol I'll finally not be riding Rudolph! Bit random about the batt though, do you reckon I could chuck it on a car charger in the morn for like 30mins just to top it up?

If the paint is still good you should be able to rough it up with a bit of sand paper and just spray over it. What's the clear coat for? If you clear coat matt black, it won't be matt.

I've heard of a couple people changing springs and putting emulators in to improve the suspension, but that gets a bit pricey for me. This bike is only a stepping stone so i don't really want to spend too much on it.

most forks require you to remove the front wheel to do the job properly, not just the honda

if you're really lazy you could just pull the lids off them and put your bike upside down to drain all (or atleast half) the oil:D

Managed to find info on the bore @ http://www.vsource.org/VFR-RVF_files/Brs250-mi.htm. Not sure if it helps.

Nah, you'd use a gauge to check if yours is too worn to just replace the rings. It's all in the manual

i've got a 32mm, a few bigger, and most smaller so probably have a 30 lying around somewhere

plus it might've been bored out in the past... well maybe not but for other bikes it's a strong possibility

have got a torque wrench

I hope your not talking about that needle type one you have, those things are horrendous. I refuse to sell those to people as they are complete rubbish.

I took the fairing of my bike and it was very fast so had nothing to do. Started reading about oil and filter change and decided that it cant be so hard, and so ended up doing it here on the spot. trouble free - my first ever oil change. I will still come, maybe about 4 ish or 4.30 to see if anyone can teach me how to tighten a chain. and drop you lot some beers anyhow :)

leaving my house soonish :)

Good night. Bikes, food, bikes and more bikes...Good stories too.

Thanks to everyone especially to Steve and Andrew.

Also Steve, forgot my brake pads (old) and new rear ones at your shed so if you don't mind holding onto them till we meet next, that would be awesome.

great effort guys, good to see alot of progess made and everyone still at it late into the night... midnight came way to fast.

the westie screwdriver and hammer soon replaced the honda tool for altering rear shock spring preload. those cuts on my finger came back to haunt me every time i came into contact with petrol/carby cleaner:baby:

had the four person mission removing/attaching the tank on ewen's cbr - 3 hours to adjust a throttle cable; turns out it was missing a nut which we fixed by cutting a slot in another nut that was too big, then another from one of stephen's wrecks. at this point ewen remembered he had a spare at home:pinch:. who would've guessed adjusting a cbr929 throttle cable would take longer than changing vtr250 fork oil?

i hope the vtr forks came out alright despite my nearly knocking the bike over swinging on the strops holding it upright. hopefully no-one tries to drink the fork oil coke bottle:sweatdrop. still all good fun: 1"where'd you put my fork cap?" 2"dunno" 3"over there" 1"oh wait, i put that there didn't i?"

aprilia RS 250s officially have the best toolkit sparkplug pullers, and are bloody easy to access the plugs on thanks to clever design. most impressed with the italians for that one

hyosung made life easy by labelling the engine covers like oil filter, but did do the axle nut up a bit tight

stephen tried to bbq fxr parts to fit the gn carb, and once he gave up on it i got it within a minute:bleh:. and yes a gn250 carb does bolt straight onto a fxr but may run a bit rich till it's tuned properly, and will be prone to falling off unless you modify it/the boot. also, bikes tend to start better when there's fuel in the tank...

i'll assume those still there are still doing the "one night two colour" paintjob with the tiger on one side and fire on the other. enjoyed shaking the spray cans:D

oh, and timati: cheers for the coronas... all 5 of them:Oops:
EJ: cheers for the muffins/fizzy drink etc
stephen: cheers for the space/tools/bbq/saussies
hanne: post up those photos!
me: you left your 15" westie hammer/spanner behind. remember to pick it up in the morning (actually i'm glad i brought those extra tools or there would've been real trouble with so many bikes and so few tools). dibs on any sausages left of mine for breakfast:D

when's the next one?

lol, they can be easy drink. Usually go through them like water.

Am going to try and edit the video on the disassembly and assembly of the brake pads and upload it.

Blardy hell, been a whiles since I done a right spannering like that with mates!

Fun and games and the usual brain fades occurring as petrol, oil and other intoxicants from mechanical things wafted into the night ...

Plenty of off coloured jokes, innuendo and the witty repartee that accompanies filthy biker scum! :devil2:

Cheers to Stephen for running a great spanner evening, reminds me that I need to get back into those again for South Siders!

Note to EJ : Find a carb, install ... then you can decide what to do with the little FXR afterwards and not before! :baby:

We've talked about it! I'm hearing that 5 times now! (or more) ;)

It was nice to meet some new peoples

The guy on RS250, CB400 (It's got a loud engine!), VTR250 Black, CBR250R MC19 etc etc... :)

All good guys :D

Once more time EJ, it seems you don't get with the game plan!

Locate Carb suitable for purpose (oh wait, Xerxes!), attach, test ...

I think everyone needs to say it so you can hear the message over and over! :slap:

I think its time to hide the FXR at another location ... seems people are trying to track it down :sherlock:

What a load of poppycock!

Now, if you'd be so kind as to lean forward toward me, ignore that silly flower in my lapel shaped like a microphone, yes that's it... and now just speak up in a BIG voice and tell me in COMPLETE confidentiality where the FXR is... there's a fellow :devil2:

It was a fantastic night and look forward more in the future.

Got my throttle cable sorted in the end but took a good 2 hours.

Props to Stephen, Andrew and Justin for getting that damm fuel tank on and off.

It took 4 of us including me getting it back on as we didn't have any hose clamps, one to hold the tank, one to hold on to the pressurized hose, one to hold on to the overflow hose and one to attach all everything together.

Uh, yeah, sorry ANdrew! I owe you a beer - you had "the touch" with the honda tool (wouldn't work for me!) but the westie screwdriver won the day :first:

Suspension is great BTW! Got thrashed through my home twisties on the way back - was waaaay better round bumpy corners - no disturbing wallowing or bottoming out - yay!

Great night all - sorry I had to leave early (I wasn't even in trubs when I got home!)

Roll on next spanner night!
