Some advice needed for MP3 headphones for use while riding? I have the standard head phones that came with my cheap generic MP3 player but they are a little uncomfortable inside the helmet. What style do you guys use and recommend?
Thanks in advance.
Andy.

With the Plugz 4 Lugz set up that I use, I have my ipod turned down to all but the minimum volume, as the wind noise is almost eliminated (I would guess it is quieter in my helmet than in the car).
I have no trouble at all hearing the emergency service vehicles if they have their sirens going.

Most of the time I can hear the other bikes around me over the noise of my bike and the music I have playing.

I find background music is soothing and helps me get a rhythm going, though I don't usually bother for cross town rides, just more than say 1/2 hr.

I resisted buying these because I thought they were quite expensive but then realised I had already spent that on systems that were sub standard and should have got these in the first place.

Have recently completed my first Decent trip ( as opposed to day ride) with them http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=70799 and used these all the way. Fantastic!

I wouldn't spend $220 on plugs for lugs when you can spend half that for reasonably decent canalphones which sound fucking awesome AND block out external sounds. I use the ones that came with my Phone (w810i) (these ones) (http://www.headsun-digital.com/images/bank/1196660615.jpg) and they work REALLY well. I ride 80 km 4 days a week (to work and back), and my ears don't ring after getting off my bike or anything. Best of all, I can keep a sensible volume and still hear the music at 100km/h.

And I can hear other ambient sounds like sirens, horns, etc.

I recommend Sennheiser CX300s - http://www.trademe.co.nz/Electronics-photography/Portable-audio-iPods/Headphones/auction-149528093.htm?p=14 / http://www.trademe.co.nz/Electronics-photography/Portable-audio-iPods/Headphones/auction-149606713.htm?p=18

Sennheiser CX300s -- otherwise known as Sharp MD33s or -- lowest price of all -- Creative EP630s are indeed very good. All three models are the same, just different branded. Apparently some gits on Headfi can tell a tiny difference, but probably just the sort of difference you'd hear between batches of the same model anyway.

Just picked up a pair of EP630s for $33 from Eden Computers in Mt Eden. They're very cheap because they're phasing them out -- bring in the EP635, which has a different sized driver (but costs twice as much).

I've been looking at these on Trademe - the next model up from the Sennheiser CX300. It has a volume control inline, which may be handy if you don't want to fluff around trying to take your mp3 player out of your jacket or take your helmet off if someone wants to talk to you :Police:

Plugz4lugs the best I have used and should have had them a long time ago.

Not only for sound, but also because you can put them in your ears and then put your helmet on without them moving at all!!!!

For years I have had ear plugs and ear phones move every time I put a helmet on which is a pain. Not any more with wired plugz4lugs.

Hi,
for the past year I have been using the griffin earbuds, great sound and good fit. I got mine from dick smith for $69 but i have since seen them on trademe for $42 plus postage. They also come with a 1 year manufactures warranty, so if they go tits up within a year, just take em back for a new pair :2thumbsup

I'm not sure how they compare with the other brands as i haven't tried any other then the standard ipod ones which are crap.

The CX500s are quite a nice canalphone; crisper sound, not so muddy bass like the CX300 (CX300, MD33, EP630 have quite overpowering bass, not nice to listen to after a while unless you like a lot of bass). More balanced. The issue becomes, however, if they're worth the extra money over the CX300s, as there's a hell of a price hike for not too much difference.

I quite like Big Dave's set-up, with the old-style inline iPod remote (looks like a modern clip-type iPod Shuffle). Change volume and tracks etc., just clip it onto your pocket.

Again, I wouldnt spend $155 on something that might get rained on, abused, etc. CX300 is the way to go. It's a good midrange canalphone between absolute shit and absolute awesome.

I don't know about the size of 'others' ears but I have shallow outer ears and narrow ear canals and I'm damned if I could get mp3 buds to stay put under my helmet and foam plugs just don't 'go there'!!! The plugs 4 lugs might not be suitable for those with 'suitably sized lugs' but they have proven a godsend for me.
A mate of mine, with the worse cauliflower ears ever (from his other love, rugby!!!) couldn't get a bud sideways in his ear, but the custom made, wired ones have given him the freedom of music under his helmet. He wouldn't consider any other bud system, and nor would I!!!

plugs 4 lugs are ripoff.

go into harvey normans and buy "skull candy - smokin' buds"

$55 bucks cheapest on market but i found just as good as the philips and sony ones i used to use, except the sony and philips ones wires rip out the skull candy ones are good.

They have 3 sizes of silicon push on bits so whatever fits your ear, and they sit right in your ear so block out wind noise, and really increase the bass.

They also do better sets for $120 bucks but the $55 ones are awesome, there is a volume adjuster on the headphone cable itself too, which i found is really good while riding, if you need to chat to another biker at lights etc, you can just hear them, where as ear plugs you go sorry cant talk got plugs in lol.

Definately reccomend them, and sound quality wise i find the skull candy brand ones i have the same if not better than the philips and sony.

And ya don't have to hav e the volume up as high either so more battery life...

http://www.weatherconnection.com/scripts/imageloader.asp?img=SC-SBR3.5p.gif&type=p

i got these "rasta" ones, but they come in your basic black white etc, i also suggest glueing the silicon bits to the headphones once you find what size fits you best though, ive lost the little bits in the past, i assume you can buy more, but yeah they have been known to fall off, but i glued mine on and havnt had a problem since.

Oh and as you put ya helmet on and take it off pull the straps wide until it's fully on or off ya head, prevents cable damage, and keep them in ya ear more.

But yeah, harvey norman sell em.

Hope that helps.

Skid.

I have a pair of Shure which are supposedly the Rolls Royce of "canal" in ear headphones and sure enough the sound good and isolate sound well but my freakin god are they awkward to put in! Even when you have farkin' near touching your brain you've got jammed that far in they always work their way back out after about 5 minutes, it frustrates me to the point where I want to throw them on the ground and stomp all over them!
I will at some stage be getting a set of "wired" Plugs for Lugz because I have a pair of non-wired standard jobbies and could not be happier with them, they go in real easy (once you get the hang of it) and STAY PUT while I ride.
The only question mark I have is do they sound good? They bloody better had because they are'nt cheap!
I've been assured that they are great sounding but i'm pretty fussy when it comes to "hi-fi" so all I can do is take a leap of faith and hope for the best in respect of how they sound but I know they will isolate enough sound so as I won't have to turn the music up too loud and won't keep falling out.
There is another point in favor of Plugs for Lugz in that they are much less likely to force any build up of wax way down into the ear canal like in ear headphone would.

Great thead, I too use ear canal headpohnes.

I bought some good quality PANASONIC one for about $50.00 from Dick Smith.

The great thing was, it came with a lanyard and the headphones are attached to it. It also had clips on each side so clip your headphones in when you're not using it so it stops the cords from messing up and I hated unwinding messed up cords.

The way it's designed it even distributes the weight on the cords on to the lanyard so you don't get the cords snagging or getting it weighted up in one area.

The way I see it, you guys should all get one with a lanyard.

This is something you won't REGRET buying!

Sennhesier makes them but they're PRICEY, I reckon somebody do a search or something.

Sweet idea Rob, I've seen them but never tried them inside my helmet.

Actually I was worried that long exposure to music via those ear canal headphones gonna ruin the hearing so these might come in handy added with ear plugs when I ride.

Usually when I ride I wear my ear canal headphones for blocking out a bit of the wind and blast bit of music out the same time.

Style to get = in ear "earplug" style. Cuts down on wind noise and stays put. Also highly highly highly unlikely to get damaged by water. Even if they get soaked, sitting in a plastic bag for a few days with a pot of damprid will sort them out.

As for type, I have had a pair of Shure E3c's for the past 5 years. The cost $299 at Harvey Norman (you can get them way cheaper off overseas websites). In terms of cost, these things sound AMAZING and I fully aniticpate using them for another 10-15 years. try saying that about your home stereo. :D

No....
But when it says "Like Sennheiser, not Sennheiser" on the auction and they come in a Sennheiser packet then they're probably rip offs :D

I also got some of those "pad" type ones with the velcro for helmets/beanies but don't like them.
They take up too much room in the helmet and unless you've got a very quiet helmet you still need to wear earplugs and that also means lower mp3 volume.

sorry for the dredge post guys.

Being hearing impaired I dont use ear phones whilst riding but the man would like to. We have tried 4 or 5 canal bud earphones so far and the problem is more with the helmet than the sound. Everytime he goes to put the helmet on he dislodges the earbuds. Doesn't seem to make any difference what brand etc. He does have very small ear canals (he was a prem baby poor wee lad) and so atm we are trying out some over the ear type with the bud insert.. But the twit got them caught on the door handle as he walked downstairs and broke them before he got to try them out.
Yes I know everyone raves about plugs for lugz but they are just too expensive.
Sooo.. has anyone else had trouble getting earplugs and helmet to fit and stay put without being quite uncomfortable?
Any ideas at all really?

I had the same problem when I used to wear an HJC helmet then I bought an Arai and haven't had the problem any more. The Arai has more room around the ears than the HJC which used to push on my ears and fold them up if I didn't push them back up. I still find I need to hold the plugs in place a bit as I put my helmet on, but once it's on the plugs don't get pushed out of my ears during speed changes like they did in the HJC. Perhaps try a different helmet, one that has a lot of room around the ears. :)

Interesting thread !
How do people find the noise canceling aspect of these ear canal phones ? As a bit of an old fart, I'm quite concerned about preserving what hearing I still have (too many rock concerts as a teenager/20, 30 & 40 something !).
I'm sure it depends on the fit, but how do they compare with various straight ear plugs for blocking out wind noise, etc ?

1+ for Sennheiser CX300s, Love them, cuts out so much rubbish, although only passively and nice sound too.

I had the same problem when I used to wear an HJC helmet .......... Perhaps try a different helmet, one that has a lot of room around the ears. :)

Hmmm that might be the problem. His helmet is an HJC. Gawd why does everything have to be so expensive. :(

I have tried various and now have plugz 4 lugz - cost me about $150 I think when I got them. I did have some canal phones before that and while they were OK I don't think they killed the wind noise as well as the custom P4Lz . I wear a flip front HJC helmet which is probably noiser than fixed helmets (the latest HJC looks and feels like it will be better).
I found the canal phones and other MP3 speakers all tended to get uncomfortable on a decent trip.
The Plugz for Lugz have been a step up from anything else I have tried and I have been really pleased with them. The only issue I found one day when it seemd that one side wasn't working ............... don't know if I want to confess this????????????? ........... a big gob of earwax had blocked the outlet!!. Very easy to fix

Yes .... like you, I've got a set of Plugz 4 LugZ, and find them to be really good. I was just wondering what the canal type earphones are like as far as stopping wind noise. I've got a pair somewhere, just haven't used them yet. I got them (don't remember what brand .... but they weren't cheap .. ) a while ago, but haven't got around to using them. I have mainly used earphones in conjunction with my GPS, and the P4L'z are great. Music through them is great too.
It's about what works for you, eh. No right or wrongs ,,,, just choices IMHO.

The canalplugs that came with my Sony mp3 player are awesome on the bike, work really well as earplugs too :D

Has anyone used "earbuddies" earplugs as talked about in last months bikerider mag, they are straight out earplugs used by bands and concert goers and are made to cut out all noise other than music and speech?
I'm going to try them with a set of basic "headphones" mounted in my helmet.

I use a one of those cloth face gaurds that use velcroe the ones that you wrap around and have velcroe tabs that do up at the back of your head anyway the mask also covers your ears and helps keep my ear cannals in place.I was also told by a pimple faced shop assistant that skull candy are just a kids thing the logo is better than the product,I have a set of mid priced sony around $40 they have three different size rubber bits that you can put over the ear piece to suit your ear canal size ,they are not very big so don't irratate my ears on long rides the longest I have had them in is 5 hours with no pain.....bloody brilliant:headbang: good luck
