View Full Version : Cage causes yet another accident.

On Monday night a mate of ours was riding home from work and got taken out by a cage. Details are still sketchy but appears the cage pulled out directly in front of the bike taking him out from the front left handlebar back. The driver said "I just didnt see him". This dude is mr safety too... Wears high viz, bright painted bike, mr cautious rider too.
So our mate is now in hospital in a serious but stable condition in ICU. Its yet another reminder of how unfair life can be. We are just praying our friend will recover without permanant damage.

On a side note...
I was very nervous about getting back on my bike after the accident. I was feeling very spooked really. But got on her yesterday and went for a blat up to Papakura and back and was relieved to say it was just nerves and the passion is still firmly in place.
I am not meaning to be insensitive or inappropriate here, just thinking out loud really and wondering if anyone else has gotten the 'spooks' from a mate having an accident.
Thanks for listening to my ramblings. You lot are better than my shrink.

Went on a ride two weeks ago where someone binned it right at the beginning the their bike was chasing me along the road, luckily it missed me, but yeah for the first half of that ride I just wasn't feeling comfortable at all. Nerves were high and yeah just felt a bit spooked by his bin...

All the time.

Lots of riders who are better skilled and longer in the saddle than me have gone down in bad ways.

But I don't dwell on it, if it's my turn then it's my turn - and I will do my damnedest to avoid taking my turn as hard as I can.

Glad to know I am not the only one then. Its just makes it all that more real I think. Rider beware and all that.

Ditto on the mate thing. It's a horrible feeling especially if you are there at the time.....

Best wishes for the rider.....

I'm still recovering from when a cage took me out a few weeks ago. I guess I'm lucky I only broke a few bones in the foot where the cars bumper got me. I also lost my easter holidays as I was stuck in the bloody hospital.

I also mentioned that if you didn't make it, due to complications from your broken collarbone resulting in your demise, could I have your pr0n stash :o I'll just leave the funny ones with the barnyard animals for others ...

dumbest question ever and i dont want to ask this. but i am going to ask because there must be other people wondering. what is a cage exactly.:eek5:

A car/van . Four wheeled vehicle. Because to the biker zipping past, glorying in his/her freedom, the inhabitant seems to be in a cage. As indeed thay are.

An interesting sidelight: Is a convertible a cage? Or a trike? If "yes, no" what is the difference?

I have an update.

Mate is out of coma and starting to heal. Lost a couple of years memory but seems to be getting it back now which is a huge relief.
He is being transfered to a neuro unit for reabilitation this weekend.
Broken pelvis, fractured vertibrae, broken shoulder and smashed arm still healing also. But on the mend and doing well so far. I am impressed at his rate of recovery actually and his wife and kids are pretty relieved it looks like he will have a full recovery.

I believe cage - after all, a trike has 3 wheels, not 4...

Bloody good stuff - I assume he is being sent out to Pt Chev then?

Will have to pop in and say oi if I get out that way...

Crikey, sounds like your mate is on the slow road to recovery. Glad to hear that healing is occuring and its good that they have a great mate like you to go in and check up every now and then. Thanks for the update. :doctor:

Actually I have not been to see him. His drs think it best to keep the visitors to immediate family only atm. He was pretty traumatised when he woke up (he could not remember the past 2yrs at all) cause he and his family only moved over here just over a year ago from England so he did not remember anyone except his wife and kids. But hes got his memory back now so a few of us will be going up to see him soon hopefully.
Thanks for all your kind words and thoughts everyone.

Cripes, just realised I had not updated Eds progress. He spent a couple of weeks at the head injury place in west aucks and is now home and healing up well.
He is bored stiff and unable to weld anything which he assures me is not good so he is now lurking about his shed looking for other things he can do with one arm and a back brace on. He cant bend over so sweeping the floor is out.
I kindly offered to buy him a tamborine so he could join in the jamming untill his arm is out of plaster and he can play his guitar again.
Aint I nice...:devil2:
Anyhoo his head injury is healing up well and apart from the normal tiredness etc that comes with a head trauma, it looks like he will make a full recovery. YEAH!
