View Full Version : Installing new bar ends?

I thought this would be a pretty simple job but it has not been.

I just got some new bar ends and tried to take the old ones out but to no avail. I used an allum key to remove the old bar ends, no problem. The guy at the shop said that I would have to remove the old expanders inside the handlebars, in order to get the new oxford carbonised bar ends to fit. I have tried screwing things in there and pulling it but they won't come out.

Is there any tool (probably shaped like a T with a male 8mm thread at the end) that I can screw in there and then pull the old expanders out?

Or are the bar ends I have got simply the wrong ones for my bike? It's a 1996 aprilia rs250. I've attached a photo showing the throttle side handlebar.

Cheers,

have you tried just taking the expander of the new one and just screwing in into your old one?

are you sure that the old one isnt glued inside the bar, it doesnt look like an expander, it looks like a threaded rubber bush that has been vulcanised to the inside of the clip on.

I tried that but its too long, and leaves an ugly looking gap. I tried bashing it in with a mallet but no luck there either. I suppose I could chop the end off the screw?

chop away. (make sure there is an adult present if you are using scissors)
