View Full Version : Don'tcha just hate cyclists? Poll

Well how much?
Me, I AM a cyclist. For the last 6 yrs in Auckland I've spent more time on my 40k commute doing it by cycle than motorbike, and for the last 20 I've enjoyed riding all types of motorbikes, road bikes and mountain bikes and driving cars. Personally I think doing all three gives you a better understanding of traffic and riding.
But I know loads of you hate cyclists. Especially lycra wearing ones. On the other hand, there is a fair number of you who are like me and pro cycling too.
So I thought I would give you this dilemma and see how the numbers shake out:
A little while back I was cycling scenic drive when some kids in a small green hatch leaned out the car as it passed me, and hit me.
It was pretty obvious they were heading to Piha.
I was so angy.
As a fellow KBer if I had tried to flag down you on your motorbike to get their numberplate for me would you have helped? - see poll

As a Motorcyclist and Cyclist, i have a lot of sympathy for both.
Especially the stock Trucks that get too close... Normal trucks are okay, but a stock truck within 300 metres of me on either vehicle is too close!!!
Reminds me, got to clean the leathers when i get home!
Anyway, it actually amazes me how many cyclists can't actually ride!
I mean, it is all good being able to turn the pedels at 100 rpm for 5 hours, but you still have to know how to ride.
That's where motorcycling is good...
Also, some cyclists do forget about manners on the road.
I saw it last night.
Situation: Blasting alond a back road last evening at 100, and see this colourful "thing" on the side of the road about two k's away.
As i got closer, i realised it was a bunch of cyclists stopped. Half were on the road.
Over the brow of the hill comes a car. I slow, and pull over to the left. Car see's them much later than i did and does the big swerve thing.
Thnakfully there was heaps of room in the end... and that included room for the car to bin into the ditch in front of me!
Now, this bunch may have thought they were far enough from the brow of a hill. They were for a 30km/hr bike. But for a car traveling 100... NO WAY! Especially since the driver obviously was asleep... As it turns out they stopped for a mate who had punctured just over the other side, and was fixing his flat. Now, I'm sure the driver could have made a mental note of this... But maybe i'm expecting too much.
The other factor was the clowns who pretended the road was now a foot path. Yes, it was a narrow country road, but 300m further along was a driveway they could have parked in!
Do i hate cyclists? No. Do i hate Car drivers? No. Do i hate Truck Drivers? No.
What I do hate is idiotic actions.
They can be done by all manner of people though.... including myself.
At least i'm man enough to admit when i stuff up though.

I cant stand badly behaved kids (or adults). What really gets me going is retards who throw their crap out the window regardless of who is following. I remember one trip to Hamilton where this kid threw a burger box out his window and it hit the bonnet of our car. Wanted to smack their scrawny little @rse, but the parents must've known something 'cos they took off, pedal to the metal.

Yeah, the guy cycling down the centre of the left lane in the gorge yesterday just about had a 3l Turbo diesel Rodeo ute inserted in his rear end.
Rude cunt! I'm not tempering that either, when you have a wide flat footpath that's not used by pedestrians why hold up fast moving and large traffic!
Overkill though, give me two pitchforks and hell why not give us a burning torch and while you're at it make it a large. :devil2:
Edit: I'm not having a go at cyclists in particular, this guy was just being arrogant for the sake of it, he wasn't even peddling, would've been the same no matter what he vehicle was operating. Rude Cunts come do in all different flavours

Most certainly! You can upsize your pitchfork at any time.
Remember folks, riding a motorcycle with a flaming torch can be a bit tricky. The wind can extinguish the torch, making the lighting of lycra difficult!
Pitchforks are much more efficient on psyclists and are easily carried on your motorcycle using the Givi "Pitchfork mounting system".

Never fails to amaze me how cowardly people are by throwing things at someone or passing so close to scare the shit out of you. If any cars piss me off I take my revenge when I jump on my Kwaka:whistle: Its a small world up North, so we are likely to cross paths again!

I used to ride 50ks a day on a bicycle. Almost all of it was in the smooth concrete gutters in christchurch and only one pucture in 4 years. There is a lot less friction there.
Why can't cyclists today do the same thing instead of cycling right in the lane. Especially those arseholes who cycle on the car side of the white line painted 4-5 foot from the curb. Burn them.
Last weekend we almost scared to death this woman who was stugling to cycle up a hill. Just because it was a relativly quiet contry road doesn't mean you can slalom around the centre line. A toot from a 130db air horn had her on the staight and narrow.
Got a pitch fork, torch, catchy chant combo deal.

Agreed on this point - I have almost wiped out so many cyclists around town who think that because they are so damned eco friendly and clearly own too many shares in lycra, that they can ride through as many red lights, stop signs and carve up traffic on main roads worse than a north western motorway lane splitter, that I'd almost have difficulty giving a shit scraping them off my bonnet.
Having said that, there are a few clever ones.
Pity they never seem to be anywhere near me.

I've read this post shaking my head. I'm a motorcyclist. And I'm a cyclist. I have competed for years, coached at high levels, and still ride occasionally with good friends who are/were world champs and Commonwealth and Olympic reps.
Now, a couple of things.
1. Cyclists are protected by lycra and polystyrene. I've ridden in a lot of countries from Asia, to the US. This is the worst place to ride because people use their cars like weapons. This is all to familiar to motorcyclists right? And yet, look at the comments.
2. We have the legal right to ride two abreast. Read the road code. We also have the right to not be abused for riding. I've had fireworks thrown at me (beat the fucker into the ground when I caught up), I've been shaved by buses deliberately, I've been hospitalised from being hit from the side, and from behind, each time I've been cleared of wrongdoing and the other party has been charged/convicted.
How is it possible that I've only had ugly incidents when riding in NZ - my behaviour doesn't change between countries. What on earth is annoying enough about my riding my bike that causes such aggression here? I've hosted world level international riders that won't ride here now because of the aggression. Riding in America is SAFER than riding here?! How is that possible??
There are new riders and arrogant riders who do dumb stuff. Of course, that never happens with motorcycles does it?? There are some riders that don't follow all the road rules. I'm one of them. I will not stop at an intersection as a motorcyclist behind a line of cars, where I stand a good chance of being rear ended (it's no fun, let me assure you), I've been rear ended on a pushie as well - much worse (and I was doing nothing wrong). So, I take cover beside cars (same on the Gixer).
I've run out of stuff to say, you either get what's wrong with the attitude towards bikes AND motorcycles, or you take shit from cagers and take it out on the pushies...

Back to writing lines from the road code for you...
Notice too, not all cars stop for red lights either. They are the ones that do the real damage.
Think of that before you dump the clutch as soon as the light turns green.
As for holding up traffic? What's the issue? You are a motorcyclist aren't you?

2. We have the legal right to ride two abreast. Read the road code.
In the UK it is illegal to ride 2 abreast - and basically it is in your interest to not do it. I was a teen in Belgium where they take their cycling very seriously but do not ride several abreast on open rds spread out the way your mission bay/scenic drive roadies do.
As a cyclist I will not ride 2 abreast or with those who do because its just asking for trouble.

Totally dude. I was shaved by a bus, and when I asked the twat driver for to give me more than an inch, the bastard said "you don't need more than an inch". Advert on his bus? For giving cyclists space. How I laughed.:weep:
Attitude here towards cyclists is odd. Riding 2 abreast can't help it much, but there is so much anger. Elsewhere a lot of drivers are dangerous, but here they do seem out to get you sometimes.
Its a shame that this attitude even has got into lots of bikers.
Having said that lots of cyclists annoy me by their attitude too ...
Poll results very interesting - some hard core of people who don't like cyclists but loads more who are more sympathetic. Thanks guys.:2thumbsup

Done plenty of cycling myself over the years. The worst was 10 years ago when I used to cycle over the Tauranga Harbour bridge to and from work. Riding home on a Friday/Saturday night was occasionally damn right scary, with the odd beer bottle thrown in my direction.
I certainly have nothing against cyclists, however the ones that completly ignore the road rules do get my temper up. Red traffic light = STOP, but so many cyclists just carry on riding.

I've been bottled in the cage before 100kph thrown from the other side of the road by on-coming traffic. No idea where it came from all happened to fast. Now I've got a gouge about 150mm long in my drivers side door about 100mm from the window. Just a bit higher i would have got it in the face.

I had a guy travel across two lanes to hit me with his wing mirror once. When the cops caught up with him, it turns out he was having a bad day. Does it seem right that his justification for risking my life was a bad day?
A mate of mine (ex-pro, lived in Belgium for years) was riding scenic drive - a guy with a trailer shaved the group (all in single file for the record), and then when he caught up with Scott (who was about 40 meters ahead), he nudged him off the road. We raced after him (you can descend at huge speeds on a pushie if you're brave), and cornered him. He got arrested, and spent time in a cell. His excuse for running Scott off the road - he didn't believe that bikes should be on the road.
If you meet me out on the road, and you don't give me any room, I'll give you an earful. After several broken ribs, broken wrists, arms, dislocated shoulders, several concussions, and a compound break of my leg, I think I've earned the right to be sensitive about being pushed around my cars.
I spent a couple of months in the US last year. Of all the mileage in several cities, guess how many close calls I had from aggressive drivers?
Not even close - not a single one.

yeah, quite right - but in Texas, they're a little, erm, different. The best place to ride (by far!) is San Francisco. They're a very cool bunch of people, and the city is cycling mad. I rode in Minnesota a fair bit as well, they have over 10,000 lakes, and it has hundreds of miles of cycling lanes, and about 40 or 50 miles are solely bike lanes with nice tree lined paths... And it's FLAT.
I turned up at a MC store (selling Harley choppers) wearing lycra. No one said a thing, and the staff were really cool to hang out with. The people there understood that travelling with a pedalie was easier than carrying a MC through customs... I went back, and they let me ride a hard tail with the biggest S&S you've ever seen. Talk about slow...
Between the druggie comments, the bad drivers, and my knee (need some more surgery) I'm effectively off the pushie anyhow...
Hey, did I mention seeing bike gangs pulling mass wheelstands on the uphill after the Golden Gate Bridge (on the Marin County side) with cops leaving them to it??

And for reference i have been an avid cyclist all my life and even raced for it. I think road cyclist are the biggest retards on the planet.
To put it blankly:
"If i am crazy because i wear 20Kgs of protective gear riding a motorbike on the roads - what does that make a meatsack riding a pushy wearing 200grms of lycra on the road?"
Double standards in this country - the smart are suppose to flex for the weak.

If I was in my 4x4 & saw someone lean out of a car to hit a cyclist, I'd be chasing them down & giving their car a little slap with a Landcruiser bullbar.
However operating any vehicle 2 or more abreast on a road, at a speed significantly less than most other traffic, is just plain obnoxious, legal or not.

I take it people read the point but not the words.
- At no point did i say I would run them off the roads. Hit them or even let them know my mind! I would bite my lip and wait. But should they be there?
I'm merely stating the point (with an extreme to see if there was rebut as to why i was incredibly wrong), that the world is a dangerous place.
Unfortunately no one got that far.
So to all you in the flat world..........this is not complete heresy.
But if i danced, in my best outfit in front of car........would you get angry?
If i rode my bike in front of your auto, in my finest lycra, at 20kph (or slower) not allowing you past......with perfectly good area just to the left of me (cycle lane, bus lane, foot path, fuck even the side of the road). This bothers you in no way?
Ok so flip the coin, I AM A CYCLIST! so here is the other side of the coin.
NZ drivers are MORONS! Why the fuck should i put what unbroken parts of my body in the same lane as them? Not even Steve Irwin was that fucken retarded and he played with 4m Crocs.
Stay away from the sharp end of things and you wont get cut. Yet the cyclists i see have "GOD" complex, i would rather they were scared as i was (by cars and trucks clipping me) than laws changed to force drivers off the road or worse cyclist deaths on NZ roads.
But no im a retard......but then again you have written less words than a retard so mabey you should compensate now.

There is no harder critic of cyclists than other cyclists. Not many come up to my standards! (I am sure I do not come up to many other people's - other cyclists have sworn at me for stopping at the red lights along Dom rd for example ...)
The roadies that get all the ire are not serious racers, are not mtn bikers, are not hardcore commuters, but latte-racers who like to cruise and chat, be seen and think they have moral ownership of the roads.
Strangley enough it seems to be the cafe-racers who hate these cyclists most!

stopping at the red lights along Dom rd for
I got my own line there, painted in the bus lane, just before the post office. Seemed it was easier to change the law (and force all those in the bus lane to "give way" than enlighten drivers to look for other road users. Of course this was all after i had my leg busted up by a Toyota Corrolla.
Strangley enough it seems to be the cafe-racers who hate these cyclists most!
A clear case of sepperated at birth I would have thought ...
:shifty:
Could be worst, imagine a brawl between a velo riding lycra patrol and jumpsuit poweranger sprotbike riders?
But yes back to my main point.
Yes all road users have there right to the road. Just like all swimmers have a right to the beach.
But if a swimmer ignores the local coast guard, gets eaten by a shark......do we have a right to hunt down the shark?
So why should i help someone that clearly did not take sane peoples advice in the first place.
I'm sick of arrogant 40+ y/o recapturing their youth trying to cut me off so they can get a viagra like fix on their slipstream bloody pushy.
Seems there are 100's of laws for all other road users - but nothing for these sods.
Its always "Oh that poor cyclist, he got knocked off his bike" - never "That bloody fruit loop rode his 24 speed into a parked car while being cocky"
And before you ask - yes i have been knocked off my pushy many times by cars and trucks (bastard swung his trailer to get me), and no i do not ride on the lanes of the road unless it's 100% required (e.g. old lady in footpath and retarded kid in the bus lane etc).

So what if cyclists slow you down. Whats the hurry. Trucks and campers slow me down. I overtake them and carry on - big deal. I usually have to go into another lane. Do I care - NO.
Why is it when we can overtake trucks taking up the whole lane at 90 with the greatest of ease on a motorbike do people have trouble overtaking pushbikes 2 (or more) abreast traveling at 30.
And as for the rego thing - WTF - would that mean if my kids ride to school I would have to rego their bikes. Or would it mean that a cyclist could ride where they want in the lane (even more than they do now), because they have paid for the right to use the road.

Covent Garden, by the look of it. Good on 'em.
I had a 200k weekly commute into Waterloo on my cycle for 5 years and had 2 incidents (and I stopped at all red lights):
1) I was pushed over in the "anti-capitalist" riots in 1999
2) I hit a stupid group of kids that ran out in front on me when I was tanking so hard it tore my beautiful Mavic 317 disc wheel in half. Gits.
Well, my poll is almost over. Thanks everyone for voting.
Reults are interesting - as many cyclists here as there are people who hate the cyclists - almost a balance. And in the middle the majority of decent folks who'll help anyone out.
If cyclists did themselves a favour and rode single-file it looks as though even more people would be less anti-cyclist.

So basically thats when I wondered "would any of the bikers here be likely to help me find these retards ... or do they all hate cyclists?"

Well, I think I'm qualified to post on this one. I was a bicycle courier for about 18 months in Auckland finishing at the end of last year. If I was keeping up with traffic, I would ride the same as if I was on a motorbike, and it really works. I'd assert my position on the road.
I don't fully understand why people get annoyed with bicycles, it's some weird thing that only psychologists can answer. But my dad used to blast them with his airhorns and think it was great... Bastard.
As a bike courier I never used to follow any road rules, for several reasons. To most people pedestrians and drivers alike we are invisible, and they don't follow any rules when it comes to cyclists. Secondly, the less rules I followed the faster I could go and the more money I could make. Thirdly, following the rules doesn't keep you safe. I made my own rules and they go as follows: Don't crash, and don't hit anyone. I was quite happy riding down the wrong side of the road, running reds constantly, and riding on the footpath if necessary. I managed to survive 18 months 9 hours a day all weather conditions going full tilt a lot of the time without getting or causing any severe injuries or damage apart to my own bicycle (and accidentally pulling off someones very rusted rear spoiler). I think what pisses people off so much about this is that they are jealous because they are all pent up from sticking to all the unnecessary rules put onto them, and when they see someone else with the freedom they deny themselves it makes them angry. People hate to see others having fun, same reason some people hate motorcyclists.
I used to and still do grab onto peoples vehicles for a tow when it's beneficial. Like the trays on utes, rear spoilers, wheel arches. Some people would think it was great and give you the thumbs up or big smiles, and some people would hurl abuse, it all depends on the state of mind of the person in question. I'm not doing any harm, I'm having fun, I'm saving the environment, I'm keeping the road clear of one vehicle, and I'm going fast. Some people just need to vent, and cyclists are an easy target because "they are smaller than you in your car". Some people like telling others what to do, they are the ones that toot and try to tell you to let go, to which I've yelled back "NO" with a cheeky grin on my face. And others like to vent with abuse. I always give a big cheeky grin and perhaps a thumbs up, which really riles these people up.
In my 18 months as a bike courier both motorcycle and bicycle I never got one ticket. It was the most awesome job I ever did. But it takes a toll.
A couple of sundays ago on my bicycle, I managed to do 18k's from south yarra to heidelberg (vic wreckers) in under 30 minutes in pretty solid melbourne traffic and that was waiting at most traffic lights. I don't hold cars up anywhere near as much as they hold me up. Google maps says its approx a 41min car drive

I dunno man, my only irritation with cyclists and other vehicles on the road is when they don't give a crap about other people on the road.
Grabbing onto someone's vehicle is pretty crap, how would you feel if a skateboarder was bored or lazy and grabbed the back of your push bike for a free ride.
Your closing up the spaces that people rely on for vision and judging distances, not to mention risking someone else's spoiler/paint. Not caring about a car driver on the road is the same thing you are complaining about.
vtec
18th April 2008, 15:55
haha, you're a sensitive one. Well, sometimes other couriers would grab onto my pack while I was trying to cycle up hill. On my little 125 farmbike taht I used for couriering I once towed one of the bike couriers out to silverdale on his way home... got him up to 70k/hr on it. I don't see why anyone should get annoyed, I thought it was great fun. 80% of the time, people in their cars had no idea I was sketching a ride. If they spotted me, I'd try to judge their reaction before deciding whether or not to let go, many think it's cool. Why would I be annoyed if a skateboarder wanted a tow, if he can hold on and not crash then why not.
But it's crap because you say so. hey if it was a stunning new porsche turbo yeah I wouldn't grab it, but most people's vehicles are far from perfect, and the worst I was going to do would leave some fingermarks on it. I've possibly taken 1000 tows, I think I've been up to about 90k/hr on a tow.
Wow, I'm making the vehicle wider by about 40 cm. If it gets dodgy too close to a kerb or a car in the lane to your left you let go and tuck in behind. I don't see how I'm affecting people's vision and ability to judge distances?
So how do these cyclists show their inability to give a crap about other road users and if you can explain how it negatively affects you and not sound like you are being pedantic I'll give you ten points. Most people are annoyed because they might have to slow to 30k/hr until they can get past which means they might be doing 20k/hr slower than their normal speed for a period of anywhere from 5 to 30 seconds, now in the scheme of things think of the massive impact of this on the poor driver of the car. And this is only when the car can't go straight past. I usually manage to travel at about 40k/hr under my own steam consistently, now cars will often try to overtake me even when I'm keeping up with the car in front, they will sort of move up next to me and squish me to the side.... so nowadays if I'm keeping up with traffic I assert myself in the lane and sit in the middle of my lane like a motorbike... people actually respect that to some degree.
Also think of the fact that by this poor bastard being out in the elements while you are all snug in your car, has freed up that piece of road for you to use or you would be one car further back which might make you miss that next set of lights. Perspective people. A cyclists impact on slowing your journey is less than that if they were all in cars by heaps.

Haha, it's not about what you ride, it's about how you ride it. I started couriering on a 1970's steel frame 10speed... took me 3 months to destroy it, but the frame was still good. But I've bought a brand new alloy bike which looked pretty solid, and snapped the frame in 3 months aswell mostly from fatigue. Auckland is the second hilliest CBD in the world, so most of us used gears. Some used singles, and a couple used fixies, and we all used brakes... the pads would only last a couple of weeks. Had to sometimes replace wheels because they'd been worn out by the brakepads.
I actually gave up on the road bikes and started using an old steel Giant boulder mountainbike weighed about 10kgs, but it was strong and had rigid forks.... but still managed to snap the rear axle

The real question is, of most things that people get annoyed about on here I've probably done it, but am I an idiot for doing it, or am I a genius for being able to do it without making mistakes and causing an accident? Just because you break rules doesn't make you dangerous. It's how you break them, and whether you are able to factor in and assess and allow for all possible outcomes when you break said rule. Hence spending thousands of hours in CBD traffic on a bicycle often going as hard as I can, without ever having to have a day off for an injury caused by bicycle couriering. I did have about a week off for a motorcycle racing accident though.
What most people will get annoyed about is that they don't think that each individual should have the right to decide what rules they can break. But I think I would get very depressed and feel life was meaningless without doing things that excite me. In me that kind of depression would just make me more dangerous.

I don't hold cars up anywhere near as much as they hold me up. Google maps says its approx a 41min car drive
This is the best post I've read in ages. I quoted the whole thing just to piss the anti-cyclists off. 10/10. Two thumbs up.

Yeah, second to san fran actually, but have talked to couriers who'd worked both and said auckland was more challenging. The CBD is a great big pit
Think Hobson st, nelson st.. all hills about 1 k long... same with symonds st, even Queen Street is a hill, now the streets perpendicular all go down towards queen st... wyndham, victoria, wellesley, and then you've got the likes of vincent, pitt, not to mention bloody wakefield or airedale.... the only street that isn't a hill is quay and fanshawe and K road.
Yeah, I can back that up. You can get across SF really easily, and most of it is pretty flat - the hills start on one side, but you generally ride across or around, not up. For example, getting from MOMA to fisherman's wharf, you'd just ride around. Fixed gears work well for SF, I had a 'Dale with DA (slumming it, I like record) - the toughest part of SF is the change of temps, it can be more extreme that AK. I reckon it's about 10000 times safer in SF than Ak, and VTEC, you have my respect for being a pedalie in this city. I met one chick who had a Colnago fixed with record pista - but it was about 15 years old with perfect polished lugs. It's a hard road to find the perfect woman.
The best ride in SF? From Golden Gate park, across to Haight Ashbury, you can ride with Satan sucking your wheel - it's inspiring.

You should pay registration for each woman that you ride aswell you lucky bastard.
Only one at a time, and I'd be happy to be with the perfect one and none other forever.

so you should pay rego for the cycle AS well.
(as much as i hate the user pays per vehicle)
As a thought - why don't you come for a ride on a pushie with me and experience it from the other side. Once you've been on our side for an hour, you might reconsider your position.

Well, I had to have a fuc*ing good laugh this morning! (Nobody injured though).
Approaching a pedestrian crossing and what is happening...?
A cyclist is walking around, a pushbike leaning up against a wall and a white van with "disabled transportation" (wheelchair passengers) painted on the side and a very bent front numberplate!!!
Another lycra-clat tosspot who thinks it is legal to ride across a pedestrian crossing on their bike. Read the road rules, it is NOT legal to do so. Cyclists must stop and push their bicycle across.
Strangely enough, after this, ALL the other cyclists were pushing their bikes across the crossing. I wonder why?

Well how much?
A little while back I was cycling scenic drive when some kids in a small green hatch leaned out the car as it passed me, and hit me.
It was pretty obvious they were heading to Piha.
I was so angy.
As a fellow KBer if I had tried to flag down you on your motorbike to get their numberplate for me would you have helped? - see poll
Yes, I would have stopped to help. I ride a pushbike too. Problem is I ride a 50cc scooter so probably wouldn't have managed to catch them, let alone get all the way to Piha. As for cyclists on the road a lot don't follow the rules, going through red lights, etc.

I always stop for anyone, unless it's not safe. Giving a helping hand is my way of paying back those that have, over the years: rushed me to the hospital after crashing (x2), getting run over by a truck and calling the ambulance, stopped when I was in the middle of the Mexican desert with a flat tyre and drove me to a repair shop, in same desert when I rode off the shoulder, blew a fuse and didn't have a spare and drove me to a parts store, etc, etc...
What goes around, comes around.
Cyclists are a different breed, but we are all on the same roads with cages, sharing the same, if not increased risks.
