View Full Version : Wellington: The Cruisy Sunday Morning Rides for 2008

The Cruisy Sunday Morning Ride. ("TCSMR")
Replacing our summer The Cruisy Wednesday Night Ride (TCWNR) until the return of Daylight Saving is a Cruisy Sunday ride to interesting places with interesting people. It's an excuse to go out and enjoy the sunday brunch lifestyle and to find pubs and cafes that we'd not normally bother with or to go back to old favourites.
Destinations previously ranged from Featherston, Martinborough, Lake Ferry, Carterton, Wellington city, Karori, Trentham, Paremata, Whitemans Valley, Palmerston North and Paekakariki. The idea is that sundays give us time to go a little further and stay a little longer on our ride than we can do on a Wednesday night. This is great for new riders as the whole thing can be a bit more relaxed.
Groups meet at various locations like Caltex Kaiwhara, Pauatahanui Challenge, the Duck Pond and Haywards to head for the Final Assembly point at Caltex Rimutaka ("Rimutex") or any other place that the group has decided in the previous week might be a good idea, at 10:00am (As a result of this Poll) (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=48573), for a 10:30 departure.
Please Note: This ride is arranged in order to provide a local social riding event for the local KB riders which includes the smaller CC bikes and those who generally prefer slower paced rides.
This event works well by having the group remain as a group when in transit and by travelling at predominantly road legal speeds. We re-group often on these rides where the resulting chats and bike-spotting are often the best parts.
All KB riders and friends are welcome to attend this ride. However, should you struggle to slow to the group's easy going pace, we ask that you be considerate and stick with it so that it is inclusive of new and less adventurous riders.
All first timers are welcome. So feel free to tag along for an enjoyable social event.
Destination ideas are usually discussed in this forum with final determination being made by the group on the day. If we fancy a particular pub or cafe then we'll gauge numbers and can make a booking ... in which case that's where we go.
If the weather looks dodgy on any given Sunday, tune in to this thread for the group decision of go or no-go. See you there!

This being the first Sunday of the post-daylight saving era, it's time for The Cruisy Sunday Morning Rides again for 2008.
There's a number of groups talking about going over the hill in the morning, I haven't seen any starting times so here's one from us. The weather today was incredible so we've just got back from a return ride to Wanganui. This weather is too good to not go riding so it's all on again tomorrow.
Nasty SweetP and myself are going to ride to Palmy for lunch so we thought we'd at least do the hill with any others doing it at about that time.
In formal TCSMR tradition we'll hang around at Rimutex at 10 for the 10:30 kick-off. All are welcome.
There's already a plan afoot being discussed here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?p=1517679#post1517679) so it looks like we'll all meet up somewhere during the day.

This is the usual place, someone started it a few years ago so that there was somewhere we knew to look if anyone felt like a pootle on a Sunday. Sometimes you want to go off on your own and at other times it's fun to hook up with a group.
KB tradition is that we re-start these threads for each year's "season" because they get a bit long. I was just a little bit slack in getting this one up and running when daylight saving finished. :)

Well the hills were alive this morning. 10am at Rimutex was mad. several edifferent groups all going for a blast over the hill ... including every cage in Wellington :(
Oh well, our group of 5 went to the "Motorcycle as an art Form" exhibition on the way to our Palmy lunch. The larger KB group sounds like it headed to Martinborough (several times) - there just wasn't a better day for it.
We had a leisurely pootle to Palmy via the Masterton-Mauriceville-Eketahuna loop (you have to do that road), lunch at Eketahuna and the Paihiatua before going shopping at ANZA. That's an amazing place - are ANZA and Motomail the only bikeshops in the country open on a Sunday???? They deserve all the business they get.
We met up with Sunhuntin (and partner), Ynot Slow (and partner), 86GSXR and SarahTvet (partner) for coffees, milkshakes, some:devil2: cake and chats.
Great day, great country, great bikes, great people - life is good.

You're right about that - bikes everywhere yesterday, but good to see. Glad you guys had a good trip through my part of the country. I went with the Ulysses Club from Masterton to Eastbourne, including back roads I have never been on and the bays from Oriental to Lyalls Bay. Hope to meet up with you Wgtn Sunday riders sometime soon.

I've just got back and it's mint. The motor cycle gods have kept the rain away, the new surface is sweet. What are you waiting for?

Argl, I arrived just as the rain started. It was enough to make the road very slippery. I felt the rear going its way a few times, so I ended driving VERY conservatively :(.
Of course, I can't blame it on the new seal, so it's either diesel spills or my tyres that don't like humidity (the road wasn't even wet, yet).
Glad to hear a few had fun on the hill today while it was still dry.

You could always come and check this (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=73280) out this Sunday if you want to take a ride in the opposite direction!! :)

"Cloud increasing. A few showers about the ranges, turning to widespread rain at night as northwesterlies, gale gusting 100 km/h in exposed places, turn strong cold southerly. Snow may affect higher parts of the Rimutaka Hill Road overnight."
.... NOT!!!!

Lol yeah i did think AFTER i posted that ! Not that keen myself Jim haha been blown off that hill once and i generally learn by my mistakes !
Though it is a NW that gets ya on the takas and it'll be a chill factor minus 10 southerly morra with only about 2 inches of snow pfffft ! NOTHING to a real biker !

As it was a crap day on Saturday, I ""Drove"" over to Masterton to have a squize at Dave Andersons motorcycles, (to fill in the day) and ended up buying a Suzuki C50T (near new just 6 months old) so it wasnt a waste of a weekend after all, and what a brilliant day sunday turned out to be. Saw a few bikes on the hill coming back.

The weather Sunday is going to be fine and light winds in the 'rapa ... it's time we did it.
We've decided that brunch in Martinborough is long overdue so at the very least Dingoz, Nasty and I will be at Rimutex at 9.45 for a 10am takeoff. I just have a feeling that it's going to be "one of those days".
anyone who hasn't been around for one of these rides, check the original post for the thread, it's all explained there. In short, this is the "cruisy" ride where great roads, great weather, good food, good people and talking crap make for a great session. Who knows where the mood will take us after that.
If you're a newbie and you haven't ventured very far then this is the ride for you.
See y'all there

... great ride with good people ... me, Dingoz, Bullitt, Pedrostt500 and Karmakillernz all fronted to a stunning blue skies day.
The route was totally predictable (well, with a detour) but is great at any time in any company on any day. Rimutex to Featherston was uncommonly windy on the hill today yet the winds at ground level weren't even apparent. I don't ever recall being pushed off-line going to Featherston like we were today. Yet when we turned right at Featherston for Martinborough there was no wind effect at all on the run out there. If you're going to get a NW, that's usually where you feel it. Brunch at Toppy's in Martinborough was up to its usually high standard and very popular, there must have been a changing guard of about 15 biikes while we ate.
With full stomachs and caffeine-primed we headed south of Martinborough to join the Martinborough Masterton Rd all the way to Gladstone where (after a scenic detour) we hung a left into Gladstone Road, passed the pub then left onto Kokotau Rd which takes us back to Ponatahi and from there back to Martinborough.
The whole ride was just 153km long, we left at 10:11, spent at least an hour at brunch and were back at Rimutex around 14:15.
Not a bad way to spend 4 hours on a sunny Sunday huh :) thanks guys for the company

That was about 5 mins before you arrived. He pulled up and where the concrete runs at a 45 degree angle where it turns to ashfault (sp). Bike on ashfault and stand on concrete which was marginally higher.
Puts bike on stand but its too upright and falls over on its right side. Once it starts going is too heavy to stop as its heading away from him.
Result broken mirror and a scratch on the lower part of the fairing

Twas a great day for a ride .. and it started with 8 of us at the Rimutex ... up and over the hill and the 7 remaining (one stopped at the top) continued on through to Caterton and then the backroads to martinborough where we indulged in a wee feed prior to a journey back over the hill and home ....
The difference was that the Grubby one once again reminded me that he had only been on my bike once (when he pillioned me) and would like a wee blat. So he did on the way back over from martinborough we swapped bikes ... feeling a little more confidence than normal I suggested we swap back at the top of the hill .. which we did ... I had a great time on the CBR (ridden it before and hated it, this time not so bad) ... he will tell you about my baby himself.
Thanks for joining us guys .. that was fun!!

Also had stops in Mangatinoka, Wanganui, Patea for gas before getting home at 7pm. Prob the best blast thru the Manawatu gorge (got past a slow cue just before & had a clear run).

So what is wrong, is your top triple clamp sitting rather crooked when you are riding along. I presume Motomart would have loosened everything off and tried to tweak it in the right direction.
Usually a crash causes this kind of thing and worst case scenario your forks could be bent. Support the bike, loosen everything off, including the steering stem and the clipons and then rotate the fork tubes and you'll soon see if there is a problem there. If not you should be able to tweak the top triple in the right direction in relation to the bottom one until you have it all lined up, then tighten everything up again. Easier said than done I know. On the dirt bikes its easy with the bars fastened to the top triple, but no such luck when you have clipons because as soon as you loosen the clamps there's nothing to lever with.
nico
29th July 2008, 16:17
yeah if it was motocross bike it would be eaisy i would have bent the bars wen i was lying face down in some mud somewere lol
but seriosly yes the tripple clamps are both inline but when riding in straight line they are about 5mm to the right i have measured this and there is some wear on the trye to suport my theory. when i took it to motomart who were dne in record time said theyd found the problem being a loose/ damaged bolt on the clip on so problem sorted , so i thaught and i have convinced my self the prolem was fixed but riding the other day im not so sure
am 100% sure no accdent bike only had 1 owner b4 me and he seem prety honst was a older fella with a big box of recepts for everything apparently in the 90's gas was around 80 cents per ltr :bleh:eh::clap::clap::bleh: but it was mentend at some stage it did fall over in garage hence a slightly difretnt wing mirior i was thinkin mabie the front faing was out but me measuring back from center point in tank to clipons is still out???
merv
29th July 2008, 19:37
Its not just your dashboard sitting a bit cockeyed is it making the steering look crooked?
If not, from you description if the triples are in line then surely must be bent forks, but that shouldn't happen just falling over in a garage.

i thisnk the dash is a little out but have set it on flat ground cntr stand measard from ground up to bars then back to cntr of gas tank and defently 5mm on right side clocer to tank yes both clamps in line just off cntr it couldnt be comething like straring head bearings or something like that mabie stuck off cntr of something it ridadable and does get riden just a pain in the ass

At the risk of being labelled offensive and grumpy, FFS lad, the only way to get experience is to ride your bike. All the experience you can get is to be got with arse plonked on seat. Spend too much time listening to people expostualting over the inherent dangers of motorcycling and you'll never get out of your driveway.

Hmmm must be a different weather channel than what I read two seconds ago on metservice .. which says showers with nor-westers ... but you are right about the takas ... but there is no point in riding on something that you have in your mind already freaked yourself out over. Ride it in your own time when you are ready .. and not just when someone tells you not to shit yourself over it. That is when you will know it is just another road.

I always made it home with my undies intact. Slightly soiled once or twice but fully intact none the less.
Riding to Levin and back won't give you much added cornering confidence IMHO. The Wairarapa is where it's at, there's a small hilly thing to cross in order to get there tis all.

As for the boring ride to Levin, Thats ok Like I said I just wanna go for a ride to relax, the kind of riding for a stress relife then a adrenillin rush.
Cornering can wait for a day I feel like going for a blast. I was more wonding about the coastal rode and it's dodgeyness as I beleive it had been closed this week.

If you haven't found it yet already, you HAVE to take the Mauriceville road between Masterton and Eketahuna. It goes the other side of Mt Bruce and is one of the best crusining roads we've found. You get to it by taking the bypass road out of Masterton until you get halfway along the big long straight and find "Loop Line" on your right (just b4 the vineyard). Take that to SH2, go left for 300m, then turn right onto the Mauriceville Rd and just keep going until it signals Eketahuna.

How can anything beat being a biker on a day like this.
Chanceyy & I turned up at Rimutex at 10am and it was a little quiet. So we waited a bit, thinking we'd go at 10:30 anyways. A guy turns up, we chat, he's waiting for a group that has 'that chick that races'... aha. So by 11am there's about 15 of us, mostly KBer's ... all standing around gassing.
Eventually everyone mounts up and we head for the hill. At the top, everyone's standing around gassing ... bugger that. Let's ride - so Wannabikerx2 and I are off. The others are all going to Martinborough anyway, we're heading to Carterton (Chanceyy has to get home eventually). Chanceyy? ... where's Chanceyy? Ooops left her at the top of the hill. She eventually caught up with us at Wild Oats in Carterton followed 40 minutes later by Rustys and Duke Girl. Remember, them, according to their earlier post, they were leaving at 10am :). We left at 11, no sign of them by then ... one has to ask what they were doing instead!
Wannabiker x 2 and I came home to do the lawns, Chanceyy got the company of Rustys and Duke Girl to Alfredton, Pahiatua, The Track and at least back to Levin.
Great day, great people ... life is good

Oops sorry...( Kari) is that better. Grub... yes Duke Girl, Chancey and i had a great ride after leaving you at Carterton. Went through Mauriceville, Eketahuna then turned up the Mangamaire road thats a nice ride through there, (some nice rivers in there hope there's some trout in them as i will come back there and have a fish one day.) Over the Pahiatua track and another coffee stop at Shannon before heading home. Well have to do two oil changes on both bikes before next weekend, as the little Ninja has done over the 1000klms now, so Susie can thrash it along now. Brilliant day out as it showed with all the bikes out on the road. Roll on summer.

Chanceyy ta for your message about todays ride starting at 10am from the Caltex problem was a got it at 9.45 MAD DASH arrived at the meeting place an hour late and pleased to see 20 or so bikers waiting to go, i did see you but didnt get a chance to introduce my self.
Any way tankcam juiced up we got on our way and had an awesom ride to the summit then onto Martinborough for a caffine pit stop with a bit of serious braking al lah coppa on the side of the road (i have footage).
Then nice cruise downto lake ferry for another drink and shoot the shit session then around the lake and back to Featherston.
Great Company, great bikes, great weather long roads and even longer sweepers hehe look forward to doing it all again.

Except for the cow that tried to kill me, the smashed indicator from all the rocks on the road, Steve's flat tyre in the middle of nowhere and me dropping my bike while doing a u turn...
Yep, apart from that it was great.

Still its better to look on the bright side of things including that fact that any ride you come home from is a good ride.

What a sad day (last Sunday) Arrived at Rimutex about 20 to 10 and no KB riders, or any who'd admit to being one....... Still was an awesome weekend for riding, the 'rapa was wonderful as was the obligatory fish n chips at Lake Ferry.

A lot of Kiwibikers will be up at Manfield for the two-day Vic Club round 5 this weekend. Including Nasty and I.
If anyone's thinking of a Sunday Morning ride, that would be a good destination via the hill, Wairarapa, Mauriceville, Mangamaire, Pahiatua Track, Ashhurst, Colyton Rd to Manfield. Or dodge the Pahiatua Track and go through Ballance to the cafe just on the Ballance Gorge Rd before the single lane bridge to the gorge. It's a must for brunch. That'd be a nice little 185km pootle.

I had a short pootle into the city today and it was one of THOSE days, just brilliant to be alive and on a bike. If I didn't have to rebuild the toilet wall tomorrow following a burst pipe I'd be there with you.
The consolation prize is that as Nasty will be on the Breast Cancer ride tomorrow, I can turn Bathurst up full blast on both TV's and at least have some pleasure from the day

Hey,
It appears my family would like to go for a bit of a picnic at the end of the Wainui coast road this morning so I'm going to join them then *maybe* go have a quick razz over the takas. So, no rimutex at 10.
Have fun y'all!

I journeyed forth up the hutt motorway this morning, not knowing what might lay ahead.
I saw two fellow riders cruising near the haywards turnoff, so followed them to rimutex (ukiwi and his wife). Several sports bikes were already there and ready to go. They headed off first (knowing our sheer skill and power would shortly reign them in). We were joined a short while later by sinful, who agreed to be tail end charlie whilst two of us attempted the rimutakas for the first time.
There was a pause from the mountain, as it shook with the might of the 3 proud L-plate toting riders (known as the "L-plate squad") ascending its base. Of course sinful had a bike with more than 4 times the cubic capacity (and probably even more power), but that didn't keep our 5 combined cylinders from making an attack. We stopped at the summit. Dead calm and sunny. We went through to greytown, where sinful headed back home (probably to ride a little quicker too :-) then the remaining 3 went onto Carterton. After a coffee and a snack, we pootled to Martinborough. Quite a few bikers were out. After another coffee, we headed through featherston and back over. I went via the haywards back home.
It was a brilliant day. Well worth not doing chores eh?

Was good to meet you guys ! No problem with riding at an L pace Dave when the company is as it was !
Was very surprised to meet cloud, a bit of rain (almost sleet) over that side of the haywards after leaving here in brilliant sunshine !
Was a bit of said quickness in getting through masterton and the paihiatua track to find the sun again lol (wasn't really dressed to handle the chill factor i met) funny, but ya seem to feel warmer at warp speed !
Should have stuck around and enjoyed the ride around the rapa a bit more, as i missed one appointment by leaving for the ride anyway and ended up waiting round for a couple of hours for the next one after getting home !
Still managed to clock up a good 700 k over the weekend and thats why i own the bike !
